- This report is part of the second stage of a research study Care Work in Europe: Current Understandings and Future Directions. It is one of three cross-national studies of particular forms of care work and focuses on residential and domiciliary services for elderly people: the other two are concerned with centre-based services for children under 6 and services for adults with severe disabilities. The main aim is to provide in-depth studies of understandings of care work in theory and practice – although it is also recognised that the term ‘care work’ is problematic and contentious. This study compares three countries: Sweden, England and Spain (in particular, Catalonia). The study is based on interviews with practitioners (in the public and private sectors, in home care and residential care and in tow contrasting types of area), local and national (or regional) policy makers and trainers. The main findings are also presented from a parallel study undertaken in Hungary.
