- The use of prophylactic antibiotics during urinary stenting or catheterisation in paediatric urology is controversial. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of bacterial antibiotic resistance found in urine cultures during antibiotic prophylaxis. The results of urine culture during the years 2006-2007 were used in the study. The children who were not receiving antibiotic prophylaxis had a higher proportion of E coli compared to those with prophylaxis. Gram-positive bacteria (i.e. coagulase negative staphylococci and enterococci) and E cloacae had a marked dominance in children who received low dose antibiotic prophylaxis. In patients with a stent or catheter and prophylaxis, the bacteria were resistant in 79.3% (23/29) compared to only 28.6% (10/35) in those who received no prophylaxis (p=0.0175). Low dose of antibiotic prophylaxis is associated with development of antibiotic resistant bacteria in children with urinary stents or catheters.
