• A play of joy and song of honour on the name day of Charles, AD 1701; How Estonia is connected with the beginning of the secularisation of name day celebration in SwedenThe celebration of name days originates with the custom of commemoration of martyrs on the dates of their death, or birth into heaven. Later this custom was secularised, i.e. it became a celebration of the day of the year associated with a person’s given name. In Sweden the process of name day secularisation started in the 17th century and exclusively involved the celebration of name days of members of the royal family, but later it was extended to any person’s name day. The beginning of name day secularisation in Sweden in connected to Estonia by the performance of A Play of Joy and Song of Honour on the name day of King Charles XII of Sweden on 28 January 1701. The name day celebration took place in the winter quarters of the king in Laiuse, a rural community in eastern Estonia, and was organised by Count Magnus Stenbock who, by all probability, also is the author of the play. The play contains music, dance, and song with panegyrical praise of the king who successfully had defeated Czar Peter of Russia in the Battle of Narva on 19 November (30 November N.S.). It also includes some local, i.e. Estonian features: three  Estonian glosses (kubias ‘agent of a landlord’, tidreken ‘girl’, and nisen ‘breast’) and a line in Estonian, which is analysed in the article.
