- Semitransparent solar cells can open new applications in many areas, such as integration into buildings, and may also be important for construction of efficient multi-junction solar cells. Herein, we report for the first time a semitransparent quantum dot (QD) solar cell using a thin PbS QD film as light absorber and a transparent Au film as back contact. The QD film has a strong light absorption close to ultraviolet (UV) region and a peak in absorption in the near infrared (IR) region, and the solar cell can thereby be rather transparent in the visible region. The solar cell shows a power conversion efficiency of 3.9% with a peak transmission of ~37% at ~770 nm, and an average visible transmittance of ~22%. Furthermore, when illuminated from the Au back contact side, the solar cell maintains its good performance. These promising results for semitransparent QD solar cells and the possibility for changes in the light absorption spectrum by size variation of the QD show the potential toward integration into buildings or automobiles, or for use in tandem or multi-junction solar cells.
