Problemet med fariseiska fariseer

• The Christian interpretation of the Pharisees as hypocrites and degenerate Jews has harmed Jewish Christian relations. The Gospel texts describing the Pharisees confronting Jesus were commonly interpreted at face value. Moreover, the Lutheran caution for self-righteousness was presupposed as the core issue in the opposition between Jesus and Pharisees and thus cemented the idea of Judaism as a religion of legalism. Such studies were presented in the Swedish context by notable scholars as Hugo Odeberg and Anton Fridrichsen. The students of Fridrichsen, Gösta Lindeskog and Krister Stendahl, came to challenge a Protestant bias in relation to Judaism in the New Testament.From a Jewish angle, the negative understanding of the Pharisees was disputed since the beginning of modern biblical scholarship. Christian and Jewish scholars have, however, not been fully inclined to consider each other’s arguments. Such disregard was primary caused by confessional loyalties. The debate between Abraham Geiger and Julius Wellhausen is referred to in this article as an example of scholarly insolence in its time.Recent scholarship has contributed with more source critical studies on Second Temple Judaism. Scholars as Jacob Neusner and E.P. Sanders have formed the current notions about the Pharisees. Notably, the polemics between Jesus and the Pharisees is regarded as an intra-Jewish dispute. Unfortunately, the notion of “pharisaic Pharisees” still prevails Christian circles. Therefore guidelines as Notes on the correct way to present the Jews and Judaism in preaching and catechesis in the Roman Catholic Church from 1985 is a useful tool for avoiding anti-Jewish stereotypes in Christian teaching.
