Theory and Approaches to Computing Education Research

• Computing education research (CER) studies employ a variety of method- ological points of departure. This chapter synthesises and extends results from some of the seminal papers dealing with the development of research in CER by, amongst others, Petre [34], Fincher and Robins [17], Daniels [10], Thota [33], and Malmi et al. [29]. The aim of the chapter is to provide a perspective on the role of research approach, methodology and study design to the development of systematic research in CER. The chapter provides an analysis of the understanding that can be gained from different epistemological standpoints in relation to CER with a focus on “dis- covery”, “integration”, and “application” of the results of CER research. The chapter positions the reader in relation to research methods, and provides the authors view of the role of theory in CER. Adopting a scholarly approach to teaching and learning and the instructional design of tertiary courses has gained increasing popularity since a discussion of rigour in research emerged in the community around 2004.
