Tvåspråkig lexikografi och språkplanering i 1700-talets Sverige

• Bilingual Swedish dictionaries from the eighteenth and early nineteenth century differ in some crucial ways from their modern successors. The differences merely concern the function of the dictionaries, while their form to a large extent has remained constant. To describe the functions of the early dictionaries I have choosen to regard them as tools in an ongoing process of language planning. As such they play an important and complex role in all the procedures that constitute the codification of the language: i.e. the graphization, the grammatication and the lexication. The dictionaries are involved in the graphization by establishing the alphabethical order of the Swedish graphemes. They are, in some ways, superior to the contemporary grammars, as the latter tend to rely upon the system established for the description of the Latin language. The double role as grammarian and lexicographer, played by Abraham Sahlstedt, is in this context extremely fruitful. Sahlstedt states that there are only two cases in Swedish, nominative and genitive, while his contemporary grammarians stick to the four-case system of Latin. He is also the first to recognize a fourth genus in the Swedish language, "communis generis", a category which can be found in the lexical description in his dictionary. The early bilingual dictionaries thus constitute important links in the chain of steps towards the standardization of the Swedish language.
