• The rock art in Sweden constitutes one of the world's most interesting and best preserved prehistoric imageries. the rock carvings in Northern Bohuslän have been documented and researched since 1627. At the time of the Nopoleonic wars, C.G. Brunius made a complete documentation of the rock carvings in Tanum. He had many followers in Bohuslän and in other parts of Sweden. In the course of the 20th century, the knowledge of rock art read outside academic circles to tourists, schools and the public. Today, the numbers of researchers making documentation of rock carvings have increased tremendously. The need for a modern register for rock carvings focusing on research perspectives, management, and presentation aspects has resulted in a development of the research infrastructure of SHFA. A nationwide inventory of all documentation of rock carvings, which for many years has been stored and inaccessible in more than 80 public and private archives, has been accomplished. For the first time, there is now an overview of this documentation. The material is now scanned and assembled in one database accessible on the portal www.shfa.se that was launched in 2010. By making the early depictions accessible, new and unique opportunities have been created for research and interpretation of rock art in a time-depth perspective.
