• This book will explore the role of national symbols and ceremonies as markers of nation building, their role in the formation of nations and the mechanisms by which they operate. Scholars and the public alike often juxtapose symbolism to the real world, implying that symbols are decorative or of secondary importance to the world of politics and economics. This book will argue to the contrary: symbolism is, as far as nationhood is concerned, a significant element of the nation-building process as it authenticates boundaries. The complexity of nation building can even be traced alongside the establishment of symbols and ceremonies as these are introduced, adopted, altered, modified, contested, abolished and re-established during pivotal times of nation making. Moreover, when the information about symbolic measures, such as the adoption of flags, anthems and national days, is systematized distinct symbolic regimes emerge, in turn, forming pre-modern, modern and post-imperial narratives. Moreover, in times of globalisation and diversity, national ceremonies are on the agenda of nation-builders and policy-makers alike, national identity a potent force on which to capitalize.
