Place and creativity: A Synthesis of ethnographic research on the creative responses of ethnic youth to experiences of education and marginlisation in the Nordic countries.

• This presentation is based on a meta-analysis of ethnographic research on the education experiences of children and youth with migrant backgrounds in multi-poverty, multi-cultural suburbs in Sweden. It attempts to synthesise ideas from this research related to learning (and) creativity. There are two main interests. These are for firstly the creative potential that is always present within all individuals from all kinds of cultural groups and subcultures, if yet denied by the dominant culture, and even at times by the creative subjects themselves. The second is what the risks and implications of this can be. The presentation substantiates this by giving examples and discussing their educational implications for youth with migrant backgrounds who live in economically poor suburbs on the outskirts of our country’s major cities. These areas have been described as economically challenged, socially troubled and materially devastated regions. Based on a meta-ethnographic analysis creative positive subject responses to learning and education under these conditions are identified and discussed.
