- Anna Lund, Mats Trondman and Paul Willis (2016) recently recalled a 1907 debate on ethnography that was held in Paris involving leading social scientists such as Emile Durkheim and René Worms. Worms was one of the first speakers. His account of ethnography was of an a-historical descriptive method for researching so-called ‘primitive societies’. Durkheim, who spoke after Worms, disagreed. Ethnography need not be restricted only to description he suggested and can provide a basis for both analysing and synthesizing understandings of past cultures in relation to the present. Durkheim was advancing an ethnography that included contemporaneity and history. All human societies have their version of civilization and for this reason ethnography is applicable to any of them he said, and most ethnographers since then have taken this position. Martyn Hammersley is amongst them. In his opening article in the inaugural number of the journal of Ethnography and Education in 2006 he described how ethnography has been used for over 100 years, as a method to investigate cultural meanings and practices and how it has had many driving forces and influences, from a diverse range of theories and methodologies such as phenomenology, existentialism, symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, Marxism, feminism and semiology to name a few, within research on different topics in different kinds of institutions and disciplines, influenced by both modern and postmodern epistemologies. Symbolic interactionism and grounded theory were named as particularly significant as was the seventies development in the UK called the New Sociology of Education (NSE).
