  • Sweden has in recent years received a large number of new pupils from other countries and cultures in the compulsory schools. At a compulsory/upper secondary school in a suburb of a larger city in Sweden, troubled by segregation, the dominating part of the pupils are immigrants or newly arrived from different parts of the world. Many of the pupils have migrated due to global catastrophes, like the war in Syria, the alarmed situation in Afghanistan or are from different African countries. A case study where these following questions are discussed is presented: What kind of visual art educational settings are possible in this context? What is the visual knowledge background of these pupils? How can the visual art-teacher tackle this educational situation? As a help for schools, the school leaders and teachers, informative as well as instructional material in various forms of National Mapping Guides have been developed on behalf of the National Swedish Agency of School Education to help municipalities, schools and teachers both identify the newly arrived pupils' prior knowledge and in this way help the teacher with the planning of the further studies. In the school subject Visual art mapping guides of visual knowledge of newly arrived pupils have been produced by teacher educators at the University of Gothenburg. The mapping materials (Kartläggning av nyanlända elevers kunskaper i Bild, forthcoming) are produced in collaboration with visual art-teachers at primary and secondary schools in various cities in Sweden. The visual art-teachers have conducted mappings with pupils that formed the basis for the development of the material, while the teacher educator’s role was to bring research-based knowledge to the project as well as subject specific knowledge. The mapping material consists of a teacher's guide based on the description in the Swedish School Curriculum (Lgr11) of central content in the school subject Visual art (Bild), consisting of producing images, use of tools for producing images and picture analysis. The purpose of the material is to provide help in the mapping activities in various school contexts and pupils of different ages, from different cultures and environments. The material is meant to be used by visual art-teachers/class teachers in collaboration with mother tongue language teachers and language tutors. The presentation provides an insight into the production of the mapping material, the cooperation with the different teachers. The material design is presented as well as different considerations taken during the work-process.
