Responsibility for Future Generations: Karl Jaspers and Nuclear Technology

• In his treatments on the atomic bomb, Karl Jaspers identified new dimensions for the concept of responsibility by relating it to the issue of the new weaponry. The paper discusses what meanings it implies for Jaspers by acknowledging the discourses on the nuclear technology of the nineteen fifties, the etymology and conceptual history of responsibility, the notion of responsibility within politics and international relations. The presentation rounds up by indicating the long-term dimensions of responsibility as presented by two philosophers who beside atomic bombs also stress environmental threats, and by underlining present timeliness och the concept.
