La música rock como parte de la identidad en El Salvador (1960-1990) : Rock Music as a Part of Identity in El Salvador (1960-1990)

• Cultural attributes build identity, and memory keeps it alive. Taking into account the fact that music is an important cultural product, this article argues that rock music is part of the identity of many Salvadorans, regardless of their political positions. With the purpose of demonstrating this, the article traces a history of rock music in El Salvador, from the moment the genre made its appearance in the sixties of the twentieth century to the end of the eighties, when the country was in the midst of the civil war. It points out the contribution of several fundamental bands and analyses rock records produced in the country during that period. The article also places music in relation to international rock, the current socio-political context, and fictional literature, which not only represents different aspects of reality, but is also an example of collective memory. It concludes that rock, both imported and national, has been internalized by many Salvadorans and is, therefore, part of their identity.
