- Singing is - and has been throughout history - the most common way of performing music. In all cultures there is singing, in ritual contexts, as relaxation and amusement, in work, in storytelling or as a way of communicating. One of the most common ways to sing is to sing together in a choir. In Sweden, 600,000 people sing in a choir, which is 6% of the population. There are several examples of the power of choral singing. For example, during the Singing Revolution, the events between 1987 and 1991 that led to the re-establishment of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as independent states. In the same way, the choir singing was also an important element of the black people's struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa. If we sing in a choir, our religious, political or economic background does not matter. We are all equal and striving towards the same goal. We are part of a whole and each voice is like a pipe in a great organ. The number of variations on choral singing are enormous. Everyone has a different focus, orientation or goal and the challenges vary. In In this lecture, I presented various challenges that a choir director can face when working with a children's choir, men's choir, transgender choir or a gospel choir. I also outlined the challenges the singer may have as a soloist or member of a choir or the balance between the two.
