Postage stamps as a political tool across time and space: Reflections of a Maltese philatelist

• In this chapter, concentration is applied on stamps that are perceived as tools in the hands of governments to push the ideas of unity, homeland, glorious past and unique culture. Many of these same symbols and images provide the basis for nationalism, regionalism, irredentism and potentially even later for separatism, devolution and conflict. Through several case studies, the author shows how such symbols and imagery - defined by law - play an important part in the life of the nation-state.
