- Thin-butted flint axes are one of the most frequently occurring types in Scandinavian prehistory. While most of the type's morphological features show a narrow range of variation, the length of whole thin-butted axes can vary from 11 to 47 cm. The object of the article is to apply various methods of lithic analysis, including edge-wear analysis and experiment, to explain this variation. In examining artifact characteristics which have functional importance, it is possible to explore many wider issues having to do with social-cultural variation.
