  • Unity lost : Negotiating the ancient roots of Pedagogy in Sweden, 1865–1971
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: History of Education Review. - : Emerald. - 0819-8691 .- 2054-5649. ; 51:2, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this article is to investigate attempts to safeguard classical humanism in secondary schools by appealing to a cultural-historical link with Antiquity, voiced in the face of educational reforms in Sweden between 1865 and 1971.Design/methodology/approach – By focusing on the content of the pedagogical journal Pedagogisk Tidskrift, the article highlights a number of examples of how an ancient historical lineage was evoked and how historical knowledge was mobilized and contested in various ways.Findings – The article argues that the enduring negotiation over the educational need to maintain a strong link with the ancient past was strained due to increasing scholarly specialization and thus entangled in competing views on reform and what was deemed “traditional” or “modern”.Originality/value – From a larger perspective, the conflict over the role of Antiquity in Swedish secondary schools reveals a trajectory for the history of education as part of and later apart from a general history of the humanities. Classical history originally served as a common past from which Swedish culture and education developed, but later lost this integrating function within the burgeoning discipline of Pedagogy. The findings demonstrate the value of bringing the newly (re)formed history of humanities and history of education closer together.

  • Sverige måste värna den språkliga kompetensen
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Göteborgs-Posten. - 1103-9345.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Statsvetenskaplig tidskrift. - 0039-0747. ; 117:3, s. 451-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article discusses the political use of the fall of the Roman empire and in particular the way this historical motif has been utilized in environmental debates and in US political culture. It is furthermore argued that the historiography of the fall of the Roman empire bears witness to the ideological and existential contexts of specific explanations to why Rome fell.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandia. - : Scandia: Tidskrift for historisk forskning, Lund University. - 0036-5483. ; 88:2, s. 339-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The question of how to fund Swedish academic journals such as Scandia has become a wicked problem, not only for history but also for the humanities as a whole. This issue is confounded by the difficulty in terms of categorizing these journals and their funding needs and further complicated by the global movement towards open access. For the humanities, the issue of how to fund these journals is of great concern mainly due to a more pluralistic approach to publishing, where not only high-impact journals but also monographs, edited volumes and essays aimed at multiple audiences are still considered prestigious and relevant for society as a whole. At the same time, these journals are not necessarily perceived as relevant by the rest of the scientific community. The main reason is that, even though traces of more traditional forms of publishing can still be found in both the social and the natural sciences, a uniform publishing ideal is dominant in most disciplines and most prestigious outlets are owned by international publishing houses. Complicating matters further, publishing practices in the humanities are not only changing rapidly but vary between and within disciplines, generations and even universities.Despite the fact that this problem has been recognized both internationally and in Sweden, a solution has remained elusive, causing frustration among researchers and editors. This essay argues that the first step is to view the question of funding as embedded in both local and global processes and that in order to find a sustainable model, several stakeholders need to take responsibility and collaborate at the national level. An important argument for sharing responsibility between and across departments, disciplines, funders and, lastly, the government is that Swedish journals are not only part of the ecosystem of prestige within academia but also serve as an infrastructure for authoritative knowledge aimed at the public sphere.

  • Ensuring Quality and Status : Peer Review Practices in Kriterium, A Portal for Quality-Marked Monographs and Edited Volumes in Swedish SSH
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2504-0537. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although established forms of peer review are often criticized for being slow, secretive, and even unfair, they are repeatedly mentioned by academics as the most important indicator of quality in scholarly publishing. In many countries, the peer review of books is a less codified practice than that of journal articles or conference papers, and the processes and actors involved are far from uniform. In Sweden, the review process of books has seldom been formalized. However, more formal peer review of books has been identified as a response to the increasing importance placed on streamlined peer-reviewed publishing of journal articles in English, which has been described as a direct challenge to more pluralistic publication patterns found particularly in the humanities. In this study, we focus on a novel approach to book review, Kriterium, where an independent portal maintained by academic institutions oversees the reviewing of academic books. The portal administers peer reviews, providing a mark of quality through a process which involves reviewers, an academic coordinator, and an editorial board. The paper studies how this process functions in practice by exploring materials concerning 24 scholarly books reviewed within Kriterium. Our analysis specifically targets tensions identified in the process of reviewing books with a focus on three main themes, namely the intended audience, the edited volume, and the novel role of the academic coordinator. Moreover, we find that the two main aims of the portal–quality enhancement (making research better) and certification (displaying that research is of high quality)–are recurrent in deliberations made in the peer review process. Consequently, we argue that reviewing procedures and criteria of quality are negotiated within a broader discussion where more traditional forms of publishing are challenged by new standards and evaluation practices.
