  • Translating Neoliberalism : The European Social Fund and the Governing of Unemployment and Social Exclusion in Malmö, Sweden
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is concerned with how the governing of unemployment and social exclusion is accomplished through labor market projects that are initiated, tailored, and co- financed by the European Social Fund. The aim is to map and problematize how such projects, as examples of neoliberal programs of government that promote social cohesion and combat unemployment amongst identified “ethnic others,” become operational and legitimized in the Swedish context through multiple acts of translation. By scrutinizing the discursive, calculative, and visual practices that constitute them, the thesis also considers some of the consequences of this way of governing as well as the larger political landscapes in which they function. Ultimately, the political problem that is addressed concerns how certain “truths” about unemployed “ethnic others” in Sweden are facilitated within and co- produced by the European Social Fund and the projects it sets in motion. It thereby calls into question practices that are legitimized in the name of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance. The analysis includes discussions about the multivalent relationship between colonial and neoliberal rationalities of government, as well as how compassion and pity function to legitimize certain practices of inclusion.

  • Neoliberalism and feminist organizing : from “NGO-ization of resistance” to resistance against neoliberalism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Solidarity in Struggle. - Budapest : Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. - 9786158016148 ; , s. 32-41
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article engages with feminists critiques of neoliberalism, specifically with the influential narrative about the NGO-ization of women’s movement and co-optation of feminism by neo-liberalism (Charkiewicz 2009, Fraser 2011, McRobbie 2009). It argues that while the vision of the feminist actors as “the handmaidens” of neoliberalism accurately captures some aspects of contemporary feminist organizing, it obfuscates others, especially new and original forms of resistance taking place beyond the perimeters of what is usually included in the “Western” context (Aslan and Gambetti 2011, Funk 2012). I discuss some examples of the struggles against neoliberal logic and practices in the Polish context, arguing that while there has been a strong trend towards professionalization and de-politicization of civic activism in the country, during the last decade we can observe a growing resistance against this tendency. The paper concludes with discussing various forms of anti-neoliberal women’s organizing highlighting the opportunities and risks involved in employing them in the context of the local and transnational struggles.

  • Experiencing neoliberalism from below : the Bakweri confrontation of the state of Cameroon over the privatization of the Cameroon Development Corporation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Security. - 1835-3800. ; 6:1, s. 38-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the conflict over the privatisation of the Cameroon Development Corporation between the government of Cameroon and the Bakweri tribe. It is set against the conflicting landscape and power fields of traditional, colonial and modern authority systems: a hallmark of the land tenure system in which the Bakweri find themselves today. This case study shows how local people are appropriating the western concepts of human and property rights and social justice, within the context of neoliberalism by making compensation claims for the appropriation of their land. It further suggests that present-day conflicts and threats to human security are traceable to larger contemporary, historical, economic and political processes such as colonialism and neoliberal globalisation, with varying impacts at the local level.

  • Care in revolt : Labor conflict, gender, neoliberalism
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present thesis is an exploration of normalization processes and the problem of appropriation in labor conflict. More specifically, it analyses the way contemporary labor conflicts in nursing relate to, and thereby help to illuminate, changes in modes of gender normalization under neoliberalism, and how nurse labor conflict thereby sheds light on wider patterns of labor strife. Analysis shows how a “virtue script” bound up with long-lasting patterns of gender normalization in nursing becomes tangled with forms of abstract labor related to “new public management” reform. Although the restructuring of work threatens public professionals’ autonomy, at the same time, it provides opportunities for resistance through collective action. What is more, this restructuring process facilitates the appropriation by nurses and, by implication, other public workers, of the discourses and ideals that belonged to the ethos of the Keynesian welfare state. However, this is a contradictory process, since the discourses and ideals thus appropriated inhere in modes of labor exploitation and normalization. Analysis indicates that although appropriation risks to reinforce gendered and exploitative ideas about work, the strategy can be a lever of collective mobilization, and one of its possible outcomes is the radical transformation of the entities it takes possession of. This interview study is mainly based on four journal articles, attending to different aspects of an act of collective resignation taken by registered nurses at a Swedish hospital ward. This is an emerging form of collective action and the thesis provides one of the first analyses of this new grassroots and workplace-based phenomenon, which may be considered its particular empirical contribution. On the other hand, the chapters of the cover essay unfold a sustained argument on normalization and appropriation, thereby elaborating theoretical themes broached in the articles. The focal point of this discussion is a certain concept of form, deployed in Marxist and feminist theory, a concept pointing to the identity of thought-forms and practically enacted forms. Further, these forms migrate: they are evoked in practices wherein “the mind is not active as sentient” (Hegel), later to be projected by the mind onto different entities. The results of the discussion thus question common approaches to normalization. In particular, it is untenable to oppose a tacit and internal mode of control where individuals are induced to comply by attaching to identifications (by becoming/being made into subjects) to an overt and external mode reliant on sheer coercion. This matter–form dichotomy should be dissolved, and modes of coercion should be understood to leave subjective imprints—not at the level of identity but at the level of thought’s infrastructure, that is, form.

  • Contradictions in care: Ward nurses’ experiences of work and management in the Swedish public sector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nora: nordic journal of feminist and gender research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 30:2, s. 81-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, austerity politics and market reforms have resulted in a renegotiation of working conditions negatively impacting female-dominated public sector- and welfare state workers. A growing body of research locates the harshening conditions of nurses in a context of colliding logics between professions and professional authority, the specificities of interpersonal work, and public sector restructuring. Feminist scholars also tend to focus on the special character of care work in explaining nurses’ growing discontent under austerity. This article starts out from the position that the characteristics of care work are central in understanding care workers’ experiences, but the analysis also shows a more general conflict between labor and capital play out in care work. Based on a qualitative analysis interviews with 50 nurses, the article shows that this contradiction is expressed through conflicts over time, management and resources.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper calls for greater rigor when it comes to issues relating to research around the ‘impact’ of research impact. It addresses some of its criticisms but also expands on the research program associated with the impact of tourism research. We conclude by addressing the fundamentality of the challenges posed by ‘research impact’. We argue they go to the very core of academic scholarship, as the commoditized neoliberal treatment of impact represents an existential challenge that goes beyond tourism research.
