- Through an artistic contribution, Luis Berríos-Negrón introduces his project “Earthscore Specularium,” developed at Färg fabriken in Stockholm in 2015. The work of Berríos-Negrón departs from a practice that deals with complexity to reflect upon notions that bring together ecology, art, architecture, science, and social practice. In recent years, he has been developing a set of conceptual devices he ultimately refers to as “social pedestals.” The latter consist of a series of architectonical installations that facilitate social encounters by resolving spatial practicalities, and at the same time reflect conceptually upon the dematerialization of sculpture. The “social pedestal” is conceived as a site for networked agency for social transformation, where the roles of the agents involved can permute, and different configurations can be organized depending of the needs of every specific situation. The “greenhouse”—which Luis treats as a social pedestal itself as well—is a long-term research site of the artist on the possibility of emancipating this type of technology in order to obtain anticipatory spatial, artistic, and social media.

- Greenhouse is an opaque manifold of meanings. The opacity is not just the result of a layering that occurs when considering its many definitions. It is more so the result of the suppressed colonial violence that is implicit in its technological instrumentalization. This mythical violence, of willfully transplanting the exotic, is at the heart of allother compound terms and subsets of ‘greenhouse’. I have been working on how this opacity obscures a range of forces that shape the environment. More specifically, I amexploring how these opaque forces affect, and may be perceived through, the forms and languages of sculptural and spatial production beyond prescribed visual or imagined outcomes. The work you will encounter here is then a probe to test how the violent opacity of greenhouse may be demystified by shaping an index as potential format for dematerialized display.

Can Psychological Treatment Slow Down Cellular Aging in Social Anxiety Disorder? : An Intervention Study Evaluating Changes in Telomere Length and Telomerase Activity

- Background: Mental illness, including anxiety disorders, is linked to accelerated cell aging. This is evidenced by shorter leukocyte telomere length. Cells with critically short telomeres may undergo apoptosis. In dividing cells, telomere shortening is counteracted by the telomeraseenzyme. Telomerase is reportedly low following chronic psychological stress. We hypothesized that a psychological treatment may increase telomerase activity, less telomere attritionand greater symptom improvement.Methods: Forty-six patients (91% SSRI naïve) with social anxiety disorder(SAD; mean age 31, 63% females) underwent a 9-week waiting period, and 9 weeks of Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy(CBT). During treatment, symptoms were assessed weekly using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-SR). Fasting blood samples were collected twice before treatment, and at post-treatment. Genomic DNA was extracted using DNeasy® Blood & Tissue Kit (Qiagene) to assess leukocyte telomere length. Telomerase activity was detected by real-time telomeric repeat amplification protocol (RT-TRAP).Results: Patients improved significantly on the LSAS-SR (p<.001; Cohen’s d=1.5). Pre-post changes in telomerase and telomere length correlated positively (Pearson’s r=.31, p=.05). Reduced telomerase activity (<33th percentile) was associated with less improvement and increased activity (>66th percentile) with more improvement on the LSAS-SR (Z=-2.4, p=.02).Conclusions: We demonstrate, to our knowledge for the first time, that altered telomerase activity is associated with clinical response to a psychological treatment in a psychiatric population. The observed CBT effect on telomerase in patients with SAD is consistent with results from animal trials and a small previous study of antidepressants in humans. Thus, telomerase activation may play an important role in clinical recovery.

Black Lives, White Quotation Marks : Textual Constructions of Selfhood in South African Multivoiced Life Writing

- This thesis focuses on South African multivoiced and collaborative life writing. The analysed primary texts are The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena (1980) by Elsa Joubert, The Calling of Katie Makanya: A Memoir of South Africa (1995) by Margaret McCord, Finding Mr Madini (1999) by Jonathan Morgan and the Great African Spiderwriters, David’s Story (2000) by Zoë Wicomb, and There Was This Goat: Investigating the Truth Commission Testimony of Notrose Nobomvu Konile (2009), co-written by Antjie Krog, Nosisi Mpolweni and Kopano Ratele. All of these primary texts are either collaborative autobiographies about black lives, multivoiced life writing texts about black lives, or a text that problematises this kind of life writing where predominantly disadvantaged, black life writing subjects either have had their lives narrated or have had their narration steered by well educated, advantaged, Westernised and usually white writers.The analyses of the primary texts are carried out by problematising them in the light of the South African historical and cultural context within which they were produced. The focus of the analyses is on the effects on and the consequences for textual constructions of selfhood when the writers tell or include the life writing subjects’ lives in the life writing texts. The involvement of the writers in the life writing projects is argued to greatly have impacted the textually represented selves that were created in the resulting multivoiced life writing texts.Drawing on theory rooted in postcolonial studies, life writing in general, and self-narration in particular, this thesis concludes that the examined black South African life narratives to various extents are told on white, Western terms and thus inserted in white quotation marks. White quotation marks are defined in this thesis as a certain Western perception of self-narration and selfhood, consisting of components rooted in language, racial tropes, narrative form, and Western autobiographical traditions. Both writers and life writing subjects have been involved in creating or employing these white quotation marks. In some cases this has been an unintentional result and in other cases it has been a conscious effort.

- Background: A cross-border research collaboration was recently initiated across the Nordic countries. These countries maintain population-based registers containing a variety of patient-level health and socioeconomic variables, providing a basis for nation-wide, longitudinal research.Aims and objectives: Describe key characteristics of Swedish and Finnish asthma populations in 2014.Methods: NORDSTAR is a research platform with ethical approval based on Nordic register data. Patients with an asthma diagnosis (ICD-10: J45/46) at any age in specialist care, or ≥2 dispensed respiratory prescriptions (ATC: R03) while aged 6-44, during 2004-2014 were included. Those with diagnosis and treatment pairs unlikely to be asthma were excluded. Demographics (age, sex, income, education level, and urban residence), treatment, comorbidities, and asthma specialist visits in 2014 were described using summary statistics.Results: Finnish comorbidity levels appeared higher than in Sweden. More Finnish patients filled OCS prescriptions (24%) than Swedish patients (20%). Most Swedish patients lived in an urban setting, and the distribution of education level was similar to the general population. Mean family income was 49,960 and 42,840 EUR in Sweden and Finland respectively, while 31% and 44% of patients visited an asthma specialist. Prevalence of asthma was highest among women in both countries, and age distributions were similar.Conclusions: NORDSTAR is a platform for conducting asthma outcomes research in the Nordics. Swedish and Finnish patients appear to be similar in many dimensions except for prevalence of asthma specialist care contacts.
