    • The present article presents and compares speech varieties associated with two elements of Afro-Brazilian traditions: pretos velhos, i.e. spirits of Black slaves in Umbanda, an Afro-Latin American religion; and Pai João, i.e. Father John, a character from a cycle of traditional stories gathered by various folklorists. While Pai João has been compared to Uncle Tom, the pretos-velhos that we meet in Umbanda communities, are understood as old African slaves that sometimes possess adepts during the state of trance. Both reveal a linguistic behaviour that is distinct from local norms: a language variety marked by a set of features associated with the speech used by Africans during slavery. The presence of the same linguistic characteristics in contemporary oral representations complements the older written sources that have been analyzed until present.

  • INFLUENCE OF MECHANICAL LOAD LEVELS ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF A EUTRIC CAMBISOL
  • 2009

    • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different mechanical loads on soil physical properties of a Eutric Cambisol with loam sandy texture. The soil load distribution (kPa) was measured in situ by sensors placed in different soil layers. The soil physical properties evaluated were the bulk density (Ds) and the soil penetration resistance (RP) on sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) row and interrow down to 0.30 m depth. The treatments were: without extra pressure exerted by the sowing machine, or no-compaction (SC); low pressure exerted by the sowing machine, named low load (BC); high pressure exerted the sowing machine, named high load (AC) and load pressure exerted by the tractor wheels used in the seedbed preparation, or tractor load (CT). The soil load distribution data indicated that the 0-0.10 m layer had soil stresses values higher than 120 kPa, which are considered very high. The increase on soil stresses from treatments SC to AC caused higher stress on topsoil than in the 0.10-0.20 m depth, while that under CT treatment showed higher stress at the 0.10-0.20 m layer. As a consequence of the soil stress load it was verified an increase on Ds in the more superficial soil layer (0-10 cm), and it followed the sequence: SC

  • The invisible pandemic : Community response to pandemic influenza in rural northern Sweden 1918-20
  • 2009
  • record:In_t: Varia Historia. - 0104-8775. ; 25:42, s. 429-456
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • Throughout human history, recurrent influenza pandemics have affected individuals and societies all over the world. Yet the social responses have varied with time and space. This article discusses society's response to the Spanish influenza of 1918-1920 in northern rural Sweden, focusing on measures taken by local communities to meet the advancing pandemic. In the five studied rural communities, the official response was sparse and reactive, and the presence of pandemic influenza is almost invisible in the municipal records. Potentially preventive measures, such as school closures and bans on public gatherings, were used inadequately and introduced far too late to be effective. The current struggle with wartime hardship, food crisis and a strained economy, an insufficient public health administration, a national preventive policy primarily aimed at the prevention of cholera, and the continued use of traditional methods to deal with crises in society are suggested as some explanations for local authorities' apparent inertia during the Spanish influenza.

  • O desenho do processo: diagrama tridimensional representativo da lógica recursiva da filosofia de Peirce [Design Process: Tridimensional Diagram Representing the Recursive Logic of Peirce’s Philosophy]

  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract

    • This article aims to analyze the objects as sign in the aesthetic context of the cinema, more specifically in the German film director Wim Wenders´ work. In the movies the objects translate the character´s interior, in a game which rules are based on the ethical-aesthetical commitment with the conceptual of the narrative. Therefore, we developed a specific methodology to make such analyses in the sense of peircean semiotics and intermedial studies.
