  • The Role of ‘Influencers’ as Drivers of a More Sustainable Urban Freight Sector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract The importance of stakeholders in the development of a sustainable urban freight sector has been highlighted in recent research. Not all stakeholders have a direct link to the supply chain, but they may still play a role in creating sustainable urban freight initiatives. This study explores the initiatives that norm-setting indirect stakeholders in urban freight, referred to as ‘influencers’, establish to support a more sustainable urban freight sector, and how those initiatives may impact the business models of carriers. The study uses data gathered for ongoing research into the roles of indirect stakeholders in the development of sustainable urban freight initiatives. The results indicate that influencers can put pressure on receivers regarding logistical issues and shape the physical environment in which deliveries are conducted. Influencers use three primary strategies to support sustainable urban freight: vehicle-focused measures, consolidation linked to physical infrastructure, and consolidation through behavioural changes. These initiatives impact the relationship between receivers and carriers and may push carriers to adopt more sustainable practices as well as take decisions that impact their business models. The results highlight the often-overlooked power of influencers in relation to the development of actor behaviour in the urban freight supply chain and show the potential for both conflict and change arising from the use of this power.

  • Prospects and pitfalls of using heart rate bio-loggers to assess the welfare of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in aquaculture
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture. - : Elsevier BV. - 0044-8486 .- 1873-5622. ; 509, s. 188-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • - Investigating real-time stress responses during common aquaculture practices is necessary for improving the welfare of farmed fish. Recently, Star-Oddi DST milli-HRT bio-loggers capable of measuring heart rate (as an indicator for stress) in freely swimming fish have proved to be useful in this regard. However, despite the growing popularity of these devices, they have not yet been stringently evaluated and validated for use in fish. The present study is the first to do so by simultaneously recording heart rate of a commercially important salmonid species (rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss) using the abovementioned bio-loggers, as well as an established non-invasive wireless heart rate recording technique that has been demonstrated to provide more accurate recordings than those collected using traditional methods requiring a physical connection to recording equipment. The measurement error of the bio-loggers was <1 beat min −1 irrespective of the sampling period when only using measurements graded with the highest quality index (QI 0 ) and it is advised that only QI 0 measurements be used as inclusion of poorer quality measurements (QI 1–3 ) markedly reduce measurement accuracy. Furthermore, sufficiently long recovery periods should be employed prior to collecting data with these devices in salmonids, as anaesthesia and surgical implantation of bio-loggers resulted in transiently elevated resting heart rates for >72 h. Following the successful validation of these bio-loggers, the effects of common aquaculture practices such as netting, grouping and enforced activity on the cardiac performance of freely swimming rainbow trout were investigated. Prior to the subsequent exposure to the abovementioned stressors, mean heart rates of trout were ~42 beats min −1 . Following netting, trout increased heart rates by 57%, which recovered within 3 h. Grouping subsequently induced a more pronounced and prolonged stress response, as heart rates initially increased by 86% and then remained elevated throughout the 8 h recovery period. Consequently, trout were only able to further increase heart rates by 7% following enforced activity. This diminished cardiac response demonstrates a situation where the cumulative allostatic load induced by prior stressors is approaching a level where the animal struggles to perform normal physiological processes in the face of further challenges. These findings are important for the aquaculture industry as exposure to multiple stressors without sufficient recovery times has the potential to result in the collapse of cardiac scope, which combined with unfavourable environmental conditions could lead to increased mortality. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

    • The Local World Collection seeks to describe and analyse the evolution in local government in various countries of the world and to highlight the latest trends in the debate in this field. International experts aim to provide readers with an in-depth discussion of some of the most prominent issues in local government today: local electoral systems, the principle of subsidiarity, the strengthening of the cities, civil participation, territorial organisation, etc. The Local World Collection aims to further the debate and analysis of the evolution of our local government systems into the XXI century.

  • Madness and The Bastard in Motion: Learning/Teaching through Performance Studies (in Tilburg)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 7th Teachers' Academy 2015 ENACT: learning in/through the Arts Tilburg, The Netherlands.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper performs a dialogue/an encounter between Madness (or the false mad Demidamia from the opera La Finta Pazza performed in Venice in 1641) and the Bastard (the illegitimate love child of arts, performance and education). Entangled they move through time, talking, confronting, shaping and diffracting a non‐existing form. Their method is about diffracting every inch of their journey. Meeting obstacles, facing resistance, walking into bubbles of flair and comfort, stepping into dilemmas and borderlands. Continuously asking themselves: What happens in the microscopic moment? When no/thing could even be imagined. On their way they challenge both time and existence. Learning through teaching through learning. Their journey is an ornamenting becoming in itself. It is an example of mattering as in meaning-‐making and knowledge processing, based on a performance of the indeterminable and affinity. The outcome in the performative encounter in itself – a potential model for teaching and learning in higher arts education.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The pioneers of Swedish economics at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century were to a large extent influenced by German ideas and German academic life. They went to Germany to study, and their scientific works were usually written in German or Swedish. During the 20th century the use of foreign language changed in favour of English. A similar transition from German to English can be found concerning the predominant language of foreign economics books acquired by Swedish university libraries, the language of doctoral theses in economics, and the language of works quoted in those theses. At the same time the position of the Swedish language declined. We discuss World War I, the German historical school, the Nazi period and World War II, the diminishing significance of geographical distance, and American demographic and academic growth as factors contributing to the transition from German to American influence, which had linguistic consequences.
