  • Elite European Universities and the R&D Subsidiaries of Multinational Enterprises
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: McKelvey, M. and M. Holmén (2009). Learning to Compete European Universities: From Social Institutions to Knowledge Business. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781848440012
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter analyzes why large multinational firms are willing to invest resources in long-term collaboration with leading universities. This chapter is based on interviews with the multinationals at universities in Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The issue of how and why multinational corporations are willing to invest in longer-term collaboration with universities relates back to the core of the ‘positive’ interpretation of the knowledge society for Europe – namely how to remain attract node for R&D. This chapter thus moves to the perspective of the firm, in their interactions with university-based researchers active in top universities in different fields.

  • The role of founder knowledge in the survival and growth of knowledge intensive new ventures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 17th International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society Conference: "Innovation, Catch-up, and Sustainable Development.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines the impacts of three types of founder and founder team knowledge on the survival and growth of knowledge-intensive new ventures: entrepreneurial, same-industry, and academic work knowledge. We utilize unique survey data of young, small European firms across sectors, which have been matched with data on subsequent firm performance. In terms of likelihood of survival, our results indicate the importance of previous entrepreneurial work knowledge and same-industry work knowledge. In terms of growth, our results using quantile regression indicate that both entrepreneurial work knowledge and academic work knowledge from previous work experience are positively associated with high growth rates, whereas results for same-industry work knowledge are mixed.

  • Sleeping Beauties in Nanotechnology.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The ISS 2018 Conference, The International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society Conference, 2-4 July 2018, Seoul, Korea.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the patterns of patent citations in nanotechnology. We apply the concept of sleeping beauty in order to identify patents which have been “sleeping” for some time but made a great technological impact in terms of citations when they “woke up”. In order to do that we categorize the patents into three different groups: the sleepers, the beauties and, by combining these two, the sleeping beauties. We present statistics and econometric models which show their distribution in nanotechnology as well as an exploration of the factors affecting the probability of a patent to fall in each category. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of particular interest and possible implications to the citations patterns and to the sleeping beauty phenomenon. We test two hypotheses in order to test which factors affect the probability of being a sleeping beauty. The first hypothesis is related to patent ownership and the second related to basic and applied nature of patents. Preliminary results show that sleeping beauties are particularly relevant to the nanotechnology field. It is also scattered within few specific IPC subclasses. When it comes to the factors of leading to a sleeping beauty patent the question remains a mystery since the models show a different pattern than the other two categories.

  • Exploring what roles the university can play in organizing interactions between researchers-users-business in order to use engineering knowledge to improve sports
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Third Nordic STS (Science, Technology, Society) Conference, Gothenburg, Sweden, 31 May - 2 June 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Emerging new technology require an innovation network and organizational structures as well as integration of research, users and public policy which are supposed to give access to valuable resources (Chesbrough, 2006; Perkmann et al., 2013). Universities have to be seen as strategic actors, as an organization, and their role is changing in society and it may be useful to consider the university as an organization, trying to position themselves to obtain resources and set goals (Deiaco, Hughes, & McKelvey, 2012). Previous studies have emphasized more research of how and why academics engaged with the society in terms of providing three types of knowledge-intensive services: education, research and societal interaction (McKelvey & Zaring, 2017). However, literature on university-industry collaboration has paid little attention to societal interaction and how a university can create organizational structure to reformulate their engagement with the society and industry (Alexander, Miller, & Fielding, 2015). The working research question for this paper is "Exploring what role the university can play in organizing interactions between researcher - users - business in order to use engineering knowledge to improve sports? This paper is based on a case study of Chalmers Sport and Technology, a platform where researchers engage with universities, industry, public policy, students and society to undertake advanced sports-related research. The data consist of 7 interviews transcripts, field notes from 7 observations and document studies of 70 newspaper, articles and press from the period 2011-2017. The study shows that the university adopts unconventional strategies in their attempt to establish structures for academic engagement with the society. Findings indicate that this platform act as a facilitator for innovation and gives insights into how universities can engage users, collaborative reserach and governing bodies within equestrian sport in order to recrute students, create new reserach areas, commercialize knowledge and goodwill.

  • Entrepreneurship in Creative Industries as compared to High-tech and Low-tech Manufacturing
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Workshop on "Co-evolution of Entrepreneurship and Artistic Innovation", 30 March 2017, Gothenburg. - : ISPIM.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Entrepreneurs in creative industries have social value at the center of the value realization, for example, community, a sense of identity, solidarity, conviviality, friendship, and so on. The implication is that the informal sphere, more generally denoted as civil society, plays a particularly crucial role for the realization of the creative values (see e.g. Bendixen, 2000; Jeffcut and Pratt, 2002; Konrad, 2013). Characteristics of creative industries are thus argued to be opposed to the more market and industrially oriented mechanisms governing other sectors, and manufacturing industries in particular. In other words, different literature assumes varieties of entrepreneurship. Up to now, knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) has most often been studied in the context of manufacturing industries in particular, including some comparisons of high-tech or low-tech industries (McKelvey and Lassen 2013a; McKelvey and Lassen 2013b; Malerba et al 2015). Important findings from these studies relate to particularly the role and importance of advanced technological knowledge and innovation across all types of sectors, and in services as well as goods. However, the initial proposal of the concept of KIE in fact transcends specific industrial domains, as has been argued from the initial launching of the concept as well as from extensive qualitative and quantitative studies. Hence, more comparative work is needed across industrial sectors, in order to develop better taxonomies in future research. Hence, in this paper we tackle a number of pertinent questions as to the exact nature and effect of KIE entrepreneurship in creative industries, and specifically how KIE should be understood in this context as compared to other sectors. We address such fundamental questions by asking whether, how and why creative entrepreneurship differs from other varieties of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship, leading to the title of ‘same, same but different’ as a rhetorical way of analyzing similarities and differences.
