  • Afro-regions : the dynamics of cross-border micro-regionalism in Africa
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This collection focuses on the making and unmaking of cross-border micro-regions in Africa. Its main emphasis is that micro-regions are not givens, but are constructed and reconstructed through social practice, political economy and, in discourse, by a variety of states, corporations and non-state actors. The region-builders are the focus -- that is, those actors that build and make micro-regions and their associated region-building strategies. Key research questions are: for whom, for what purpose and with what consequences are micro-regions being made and unmade? There is also special emphasis on how people on the ground and local communities create their own region-building strategies and how they respond to the region-building strategies of others. The case studies -- by leading scholars of African studies and the result of extensive fieldwork -- include a wide selection of micro-regions all over Africa, such as the Maputo Development Corridor, the Zambezi Valley region, the Zambia-Malawi-Mozambique Growth Triangle, Walvis Bay, the Sierra Leone-Liberia border zone, cross-border micro-regions on the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region, North Africa, and so forth.

  • Micro-regionalism in West Africa : evidence from two case studies
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This collection seeks to complement and advance recent studies on regionalism in Africa and the implications that this has for the continent’s development. The two case studies on cross-border micro-regionalism in the borderlands of Mali-Burkina Faso and Niger-Nigeria are part of the work of the West Africa Borders and Integration (WABI). WABI is a research institute that looks at cross-border developments in West Africa, particularly at the convergence between political will and regionalisation on the ground. Providing a challenge to the considerable number of state-centric, formalistic and not seldom overly idealistic studies in this field, the two cases show quite clearly that formal borders either essentially do not exist in the Westphalian sense, being ignored by local populations and traders, or, are strategically used by (often self-styled) representatives of the state to extract resources and rents. In either case, the Eurocentric notion of fixed boundaries and bordered delineations has little purchase in the West African Sahel.

  • Regional cooperation and the provision of regional and global public goods
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explores the usefulness of regional cooperation in providing regional and global public goods, with a core focus on six issue areas: trade, knowledge, peace and security, financial stability, environment and communicable diseases. As a start, a framework is developed that inter alia underlines the need to distinguish between different types of regional cooperation mechanisms, that effectiveness and sustainability of regional cooperation is contextually specific, but also dependent on institutions as well as the type of public goods to be achieved. The framework is then applied to the six issue areas and it is shown that a coherent way of dealing with these issue areas could constitute a global public policy, that they are interlinked and mutually supportive, that the contributions from regional cooperation are essential, that the underlying institutional structure for regional cooperation is uneven and underdeveloped, and that specific policy measures must be taken in each of the six issue areas. The overall policy recommendation is that the comparative advantage of regional cooperation differs from one issue area to another, but that in most issue areas where public goods are underprovided there is a specific role for regional cooperation within an integrated multilevel and multi-tiered approach. In some issue areas where there are predominantly winwin solutions, such as control of communicable diseases, environmental protection and knowledge formation, the institutional design is simply one of more or less effectiveness, and those institutions that are lacking must be created or reformed. In more politicized issue areas, such as security, trade or financial stability, there may be policy incompatibilities between the three levels, incompatibilities that have to be removed or at least reduced through a political process.

  • Problems and Divides in Comparative Regionalism
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Finn Larusen (ed.), Comparative Regional Integration: Europe and Beyond, Aldershot: Ashgate. - Aldershot : Ashgate. - 9781409401810 ; , s. 21-43
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • [Book:] This volume features up-to-date studies of regional integration efforts in all major parts of the world, especially North America, South America, and East Asia. Comparisons are drawn between these efforts and those made in the EU, where integration has progressed much further. The book asks: what explains the variation in achievements? What kind of agreements and institutions are needed to produce regional integration? Is 'pooling and delegation' of sovereignty necessary to overcome 'collective action problems'? How important is regional leadership? This work is a major new contribution to the literature on regional integration, and will appeal to theorists, policymakers, students and other readers concerned about world developments. It will also be of value to courses covering international political economy, international relations and regional integration, at both undergraduate and graduate level.
