- The Nordic Africa Institute, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs hosted a seminar in Uppsala, Sweden, on 15 and 16 December 2011, that brought together AU, EU and UN officials closely involved in peace operations in Africa. The seminar’s purpose was to allow participants to compare their experiences of the different support models that have been used to date in Sudan and Somalia. International support for African peace operations provides opportunities but also poses challenges. This report examines four of these challenges in some detail: the AU Commission’s limited capacity to plan and manage peace operations; insufficient political engagement by African member states with AU peace operations; the short-termism and self-interest of some of the AU’s partners; and the need for UN Security Council permanent members to value and ensure a shared AU-UN strategic vision. The report also includes policy recommendations for resolving these challenges.

- As part of the on-going review by the Swedish government of the entire basis for its relations with Africa, a seminar on the theme Partnership Africa was convened in Abidjan in January 1997 under the auspices of Nordiska Afrikainstitutet and the African Development Institute of the African Development Bank. The Seminar was attended by some 25 scholars, development bankers, government officials and civil society activists from all parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and some 10 development co-operation officials and academics from Sweden and the other Nordic countries.The aim of the Abidjan seminar was to enable participants to explore the problems of and prospects for the establishment of a new partnership between Sweden and Africa in the context of the major changes that have taken place on the global and regional scenes over the last decade. For this purpose, various issues central to the history and dynamics of North-South relations generally and Swedish-Africa co-operation in particular were critically examined. Participants also sketched out what they considered to be the essential pre-conditions and parameters for a new partnership, one that would be premised on greater equality, mutual respect and a transparency of purpose and goals.This publication brings together in a volume, the various papers which were commissioned to serve as background materials for the debate that took place in Abidjan. The volume was edited for publication by Henock Kifle, Director of the African Development Institute of the ADB, Adebayo O. Olukoshi and Lennart Wohglemuth, respectively Senior Researcher and Director of Nordiska Afrikainstitutet.

The essays presented in this book confirm this and provide material showing how environmental and socio-political processes interact in the making of adaption. The essays eludiate how manifestations of adaptability problems differ from region to region. such variations depend on the natural environment as well as the particular histories of development, socio-economic characteristics and the nature of the state. This collection of essays try to provide som answers to the problems emanating from different types of variation, and how they affect processes of adaption and change in African arid land.

- In 1971 the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies and the East and Central African Office of the International Co-operative Alliance organized a seminar entitled "Efficiency in the Performance of Co-operatives" and it was held at the Co-operative College, Langata, Kenya. The papers in this volume are introductory papers sent to the participants before the seminar, as well as statements made by members of various organizations participating. Although the approaches seem different, there is one similarity to the co-operatives; all of the authors are trying in one way or another to answer the question: "What is co-operative efficiency?"
