Validating WHOQOL-SRPB in Sweden : instrument adaption for measuring existential aspects of health-related quality of life [HRQL] in secular contexts

- Aims: To present the validation process of WHOQOL-SRPB andWHOQOL-SRPB BREF in Sweden, one of the most secular countriesin the world though multi-religious, thus emphasising the need forprerequisite adjustments for cultural validation of the spirituality,religiousness and personal beliefs facets [SRPB].Methods: Theprocess adopted here follows WHO guidelines for translation andadaptation of instruments: Forward and Back translation, Pre-testing,Cognitive Interviewing, and Final version. Four bilingually and biculturallyexperienced researchers worked in two groups, comprisingexperience of either the Swedish translation of WHOQOL-100, -Brefand -OLD, or research into existential public health. Based on initialindependent translations from each, a final version was then developedthrough consensus translation, which was then back-translated.A pre-testing phase was conducted with individuals representingdifferent religious and non-religious worldviews. The final Swedishversion was completed by 170 persons, aging between 21 and 89(m = 46.6), with 105 women, and comprising both ‘‘healthy’’ individualsand individuals with mental health or somatic issues.Results:It was found that the instruction and particularly SRPB items thatused religious terminology needed adjustment. For example, ‘‘Spiritualbeing’’ was replaced with ‘‘Spiritual dimension’’, ‘‘Belief’’ with‘‘Your belief/idea’’, and ‘‘higher and more powerful’’ (instructiontext) was translated to ‘‘force/power/dimension’’. The pre- test resultswere useful in this process, especially qualitative information fromindividuals representing secular existential worldviews includingdifferent philosophical and political traditions. The internal consistencyreliability of the overall SRPB-module was high (alpha = .97)as well as for the 8 facets (alpha ranging .80–.97). Test- retest(n = 19) showed r = .83 (p\.01). There were strong correlationsbetween all facets, the overall SRPB-module, and the overall qualityof life general health perceptions. No difference was found betweenwomen and men in the overall SRPB-module but in the ‘‘Connect’’facet, women scored higher (p = .02) whereas in ‘‘Peace’’ menscored higher (p = .04).Conclusions: The significance found throughusing existing translation/adaption guidelines, confirms that not onlyis it possible, but also relevant to include culturally validated existentialaspects in studies of HRQL even in contexts that are largelysecular.

Only women bleed? : a critical reassessment of comprehensive feminist social theory

- Is there a viable specifically feminist social theory that can serve as heuristic devise in our social research? This thesis is a critical reassessment of the ontological and normative assumptions of four social theories with specific and clear claims of being feminist. These are Catharine M MackInnon’s Radical Feminism, Anna G Jonasdottir’s Theory of Love Power, Luce Irigaray’s Feminism of Sexual Difference and Judith Butler’s Queer Feminism. The feminist social theories are examined and critically discussed according to their internal coherence and their external relevance; which includes the normative political implications that can be inferred. The thesis claims that implicit in every comprehensive feminist approach, there is also a specific view of science. Then follows a meta-inquiry of comprehensive feminisms as social science and as social theories, including a discussion of the effects of comprehensive ideology on social science research in general, and of the relationship between ideology, theory and a scientific approach in particular. The thesis concludes that it is highly problematic to do science feministly, but that we do need the critical questions feminists raise in order to reevaluate concepts, theories and research priorities. It is argued that feminist social theories are perhaps most helpful as ideological guidance for political action.

Bokens titel, Ad fontes, betyder »till källorna« och är vald som ett erkännande av Olof Andréns mångåriga gärning för att uppmärksamma och tillgängliggöra den rikedom som nns bevarad i skrift från kristendomens äldsta tradition. Hans gärning har sedan länge en stor betydelse för kyrka, akademi och kulturliv i Sverige. Boken inleds med tre bidrag som tecknar Olof Andréns gärning och patristikens uppsving i Sverige under 1900-talet. Därefter följer sjutton artiklar som lyfter fram nya perspektiv på fornkyrkliga text- er och personer, tidigkristen ikonogra och kyrkomusik, samt på hur arvet från denna tradition kommit att uppfattas och återspeglas i senare tid.

- Trots att Origenes i första hand är känd för sitt allegoriska sätt att lägga ut bibeltexter – vilket var oerhört betydelsefullt för utvecklingen av medeltidens fyrfaldiga bibelutläggning – har senare tiders forskning visat att han också använde många andra litteraturanalytiska verktyg i sin exegetik. Framför allt är det Bernhard Neuschäfer och Peter W. Martens som klarlagt att Origenes hämtat ett ertal metoder från sin samtids grekiska lologi, och tillämpat dessa på bibeltexten. I det följande vill jag visa hur Origenes i Om bönen använder de metoder som Neuschäfer och Martens har beskrivit.

Origen’s References to Heracleon : A Quotation-Analytical Study of the Earliest Known Commentary on the Gospel of John

- This study of Origen’s references to the second-century author Heracleon addresses two problems in previous research: Scholars have regularly presumed that every statement Origen attributes to Heracleon is equivalent to a verbatim quotation, and that Heracleon’s beliefs conform to those described in heresiological sources. The study develops a method of quotation analysis that uses variations in Origen’s attribution formulas to categorize the almost two hundred references as “verbatim quotations,” “summaries,” “explanatory paraphrases,” or “mere assertions.” The more trustworthy references are used to reconstruct Heracleon’s interpretations within a context given by the literature to which he refers himself, including the Gospel of John, a Synoptic gospel tradition similar to the Gospel of Matthew, a collection of Pauline epistles, and the Preaching of Peter. The views exhibited in Heracleon’s comments are compared to those used by Origen to categorize his exegetical opponents. The study identifies over fifty quotations from Heracleon and seventy summaries of his interpretations, and concludes that the views of the heterodox and “those who bring in the natures” are more likely to be inferred by Origen than expressed by Heracleon.
