  • Formal Models of Graph Transformation in Natural Language Processing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Dagstuhl Reports. - : Schloss Dagstuhl--Leibniz-Zentrum fuer Informatik. - 2192-5283. ; 5:3, s. 143-161
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In natural language processing (NLP) there is an increasing interest in formal models for processing graphs rather than more restricted structures such as strings or trees. Such models of graph transformation have previously been studied and applied in various other areas of computer science, including formal language theory, term rewriting, theory and implementation of programming languages, concurrent processes, and software engineering. However, few researchers from NLP are familiar with this work, and at the same time, few researchers from the theory of graph transformation are aware of the specific desiderata, possibilities and challenges that one faces when applying the theory of graph transformation to NLP problems. The Dagstuhl Seminar 15122 “Formal Models of Graph Transformation in Natural Language Processing” brought researchers from the two areas together. It initiated an interdisciplinary exchange about existing work, open problems, and interesting applications.

  • Familjer i växande städer : Strukturer och strategier vid familjebildning i Sverige 1840-1940
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book originates from a research program on the urban family in Sweden 1840-1940. It examines the family at the centre of life during Sweden’s transition to a modern industrialized and urbanized country. The proportion of singles and married people as well as ages at marriage are analysed against the background of economic development, social structure, the housing situation and “male breadwinner-ideology”. Generational relations and the different family and household forms in urban areas are discussed.By using the potential of the Demographic Data Base, Umeå University in combination with population registers from the 20th century, eight marriage cohorts from the 1840’s to the 1930’s are created for two middle-sized Swedish cities, Linköping and Sundsvall. The authors explore in detail the new fertility regimes that emerged rather rapidly in urban Sweden during the first decades of the last century. The concept “family strategies” is used to understand the behaviour of individuals and families within all social classes during the fertility transition. Smaller families were achieved through increased use of spacing and stopping and mainly by pre-industrial forms of fertility control. However, the authors also stress the importance of bourgeois debaters and early feminists as well as left wing women’s associations for bringing down the birth rate. Finally, the book raises central issues concerning the economic, social and psychological forces that shaped the modern family and the interrelationship between history, demography and other related sciences.

  • Nordisk forskning och exempel på validering
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report is about validation, or recognition/accreditation of prior learning, in the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The aim of the report is to analyse cases of validation practice in the Nordic countries in relation to a number of central concepts (see below), and to present a review of Nordic research on validation. The review of research shows that validation research has mainly been conducted in Sweden, with a few additional examples from the other Nordic countries. This research has applied varying theoretical perspectives to interpret different aspects of the validation process. Theories on learning, governing, communication, gender, organising, and validity, have been used to develop the understanding of validation. Considering the efforts made for developing validation in practice, further development could be expected also when it comes to research. This could contribute further to understanding and development of Nordic validation practice and conditions for lifelong learning. The cases from validation practice in the Nordic countries have been selected to cover both cases of validation targeting specific groups, and cases relating to flexibility in working life. The central concepts that have been the starting point in the analysis are inclusion, mobility, flexibility, empowerment, and employability. The result shows good examples of validation that empower and include specific target groups, such as immigrants, prisoners, unskilled, and persons with reading and writing problems, in working life. This is often implemented by improving their formal educational level, and thereby their employability. The cases further show that initiatives to improve mobility and flexibility are taken both in the private sector, e.g. banking, finance, and industry, and in the public sector, e.g. among paramedics and mail staff. However, there are also problems on a societal level, e.g. related to structural economic aspects, and on an individual level, e.g. resistance and suspicion in relation to the educational system, and difficulties in communication, problems that could be barriers in the development of the validation practice.

  • From radical right to neo-nationalist: Danish party politics, 1973-2011
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research note provides a case study illustrating cross-national trends reported in recent research on the radical right. Using party manifesto data, we examine Denmark from 1973- 2011 and find that the radical right has moved toward economic leftism and social conservatism, creating a cleavage within the party family over time. Furthermore, nationalist claims increasingly distinguish the Danish radical right from other party families, including their radical right predecessors.
