    • This dissertation analyses social critique, communication critique and aestheticalcritique in television produced by artists. Theoretically it draws on researchon alternative media, TV studies, especially genre analysis and narratology,and media aesthetics. It conducts a text-production study of three examplesof alternative television from the period 2004-2008: ContemporaryArt Center TV (CAC TV): A show produced by the CAC in Vilnius, Lithuaniaand aired on a commercial TV-channel; Good TV who aired video art ona local public access channel in Stockholm, Sweden; and Candyland TV, apirate transmission from an art gallery in central Stockholm.Empirically it builds on TV-texts, web sites and documents, as well asinterviews with participants. Through a study of form and stylistics, relationto conventional genres and modes of narration, it engages in a discussionabout the features of a critical, alternative media text.The study shows how these televisions work in a tradition of alternativetelevision and connects them to tactics and aesthetical forms as found inhistorical examples, but also how this type of formalist media critiquemight inform an understanding of alternative media. From the analysis ofrelations between social and formalist aspects of alternative television, adistinction between alternative as ”alternative worldview” and as ”alternativeexpressions” is suggested, a distinction that contributes to the developmentof theory in the study of alternative media.

    • The overall purpose of this study is to investigate how the tension between feminism as an ethical and political project is brought into light under neoliberal conditions. More specifically, the aim is to, through 21 interviews with 12 self-defined left-wing Swedish feminists whose living conditions, political action and self-understanding are conditioned by the economic, political and ideological imprints of neo-liberalism, study potential joints and crimes between feminism and neoliberalism and how these relate to the tensions between ethics and politics that have been present long before the entry of neoliberalism on the scene. The analysis is largely done in close dialogue with the feminist political thinkers Wendy Brown, Nancy Fraser and Chantal Mouffe, all of whom have devoted themselves to the relationship between ethics and politics and the effects of neoliberalism on political movements and political subjectivity. It also engages in academic work on neoliberal subjectivity and ideology and progressive movements.

    • The Swedish upper secondary education consists of different types of schools. One type of school is the upper secondary for pupils who have assessed as having an intellectual disability. The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge and understanding of pupils’ experiences of everyday life in school, and how they perceive the significance of their sense of belonging to this type of school. An additional aim of the study is to increase the knowledge about different ways of organizing the education and teaching. The collection of data started with a national questionnaire survey which was directed to headteachers at the schools. Based on the results from the survey five schools were selected. By participant observations at the schools and repeated interviews with 14 young women and 12 young men, the first person perspective has been studied and analysed through an interpretive approach. The analysis showed that knowledge about the schools different ways of organizing the teaching are of importance, to understand pupils’ diverse experiences of school life. As an example it has an impact on how the pupils evaluate different types of knowledge, but also how they view their future opportunities. Any clear connection between the schools different ways of organizing the education and teaching and pupils’ experiences of their sense of belonging to this type of school has not emerged. Instead pupils’ awareness, confidence, uncertainty, dejection and determination are to be seen as a framework of understanding, telling us about their experiences of their school affiliation. Together they demonstrate a complexity surrounding pupils’ situation, associated to both advantages and disadvantages in school, but also their thoughts about identity and how they perceive being categorized as deviant by others. The analysis also showed that expectations on the pupils, and their possibilities in the school context, are related to a special school culture and to gender differences.

    • This thesis is an examination and a critical account of the Swedish Election Studies, carried out at the Department of Political Science, Gothenburg University in collabo­ration with Statistics Sweden. The primary sources are the fifteen main reports delivered to the public through the years 1977 – 2006. The method is to reconstruct some central blocks of thought and ideas in these reports, on the one hand, and to scrutinize and criticize them, on the other. The overarching result is that the Swedish Election Studies, in spite of its proclaimed scientific objectivity and value-neutrality, in fact can be characterized as permeated by normative political thought, explicitly as well as implicitly. Concerning the view of science, the Swedish Election Studies proclaims objectivity and value-neutrality. This is criticized in the thesis as impossible, from the point of view of philosophy of the social sciences, and as de facto wrong, since normative political thought is shown to be both present and important in all the reports. Concerning the Swedish democratic system, the Swedish Election Studies: 1) use Sweden as its immediate starting-point for description and explanation, and not some specific ideal or normative perspective, 2) maintain that Swedish democracy, empirically seen, equals electoral and representative democracy (swed. “valdemokrati”), 3) and that Swedish democracy, equally empirically seen, is in good health. This is criticized in the thesis as containing a subtly masked and deviously defended implicit normative ideal, i.e electoral and representative democracy, as a democratic model, and for leading to an equally implicit and masked guardianship of the existing democratic system in Sweden. Concerning the enlightened citizen, the Swedish Election Studies formulate an explicit ideal. Citizens in a democracy should be politically enlightened in order to be self-governing; and according to the accompanying operational criteria, Swedish citizens are. This is criticized in the thesis as an ideal that is reduced to an utter absurdity, where the operational criteria chosen are both narrow and shallow, and the interpretative thresholds low. The accompanying empirical results, and the continuing interpretation in all the reports, are that Swedish citizens always are sufficiently enlightened. This is regarded in the thesis as just another block of thought in the guardianship and normative bias inherent in the Swedish Election Studies.
