    • A multi-channel reception scheme that allows each node to receive an arbitrary set of wavelengths simultaneously (i.e., collision-free) is proposed for optical interconnects. The proposed scheme only needs to use a few receivers and fixed-wavelength filters that are designed based on error-control coding theory. Experiments with up to four channel collision-free reception units are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

    • In fiber-optic communications, evaluation of mutual information (MI) is still an open issue due to the unavailability of an exact and mathematically tractable channel model. Traditionally, lower bounds on MI are computed by approximating the (original) channel with an auxiliary forward channel. In this paper, lower bounds are computed using an auxiliary backward channel, which has not been previously considered in the context of fiber-optic communications. Distributions obtained through two variations of the stochastic digital backpropagation (SDBP) algorithm are used as auxiliary backward channels and these bounds are compared with bounds obtained through the conventional digital backpropagation (DBP). Through simulations, higher information rates were achieved with SDBP, which can be explained by the ability of SDBP to account for nonlinear signal--noise interactions

  • Scalability analysis methodology for passive optical interconnects in data center networks using PAM

    • A framework is developed for modeling the fundamental impairments in optical datacenter interconnects, i.e., the power loss and the receiver noises. This framework makes it possible, to analyze the trade-offs between data rates, modulation order, and number of ports that can be supported in optical interconnect architectures, while guaranteeing that the required signal-to-noise ratios are satisfied. To the best of our knowledge, this important assessment methodology is not yet available. As a case study, the trade-offs are investigated for three coupler-based top-of-rack interconnect architectures, which suffer from serious insertion loss. The results show that using single-port transceivers with 10 GHz bandwidth, avalanche photodiode detectors, and quadratical pulse amplitude modulation, more than 500 ports can be supported.

    • Modular design based on spatial division-multiplexing switches is a promising way to improve the capacity and reduce the cabling complexity of data center networks. However, due to the coexistence of mice and elephant flows, in modular data center networks a trade-off between the blocking probability and total throughput arises. In fact, blocking elephant flows would lead to a relevant penalty on the throughput but a small penalty on the blocking probability. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the blocking and throughput in modular data center networks based on optical spatial division multiplexing. We combine the two metrics linearly by a weight factor that prioritizes them relatively. To solve the resource allocation problem, we propose both mixed integer linear programming formulations and close-to-optimal heuristics for three different spatial division multiplexing switching schemes. Simulation results demonstrate that a carefully chosen weight factor is necessary to achieve a proper balance between the blocking probability and throughput for all the schemes.
