  • Living Room on the Move : Autonomous Vehicles and Social Experiences
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450347631 ; 23-27-October-2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing autonomous vehicles is technically complex and up to now research has focused on technical improvement and operative safety. As the level of automation increases the role of the driver will change; from controlling every movement of the vehicle into becoming an operator/passenger. Little is known about how this new context will affect the social experiences with and within the vehicle. This workshop focuses on three different kinds of social experience and socializing, namely; between other road users and the autonomous car, the social activities taking place within the autonomous car, and lastly the relationship between the car and the operator. The workshop aims at exploring possible practices, research and design directions of autonomous vehicles in relation to these social experiences. A human-centered design approach is the core of the workshop, with playful field excursions and ideation sessions.

  • Exploring end-user experiences : self-perceived notions on use of adaptive cruise control systems
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IET Intelligent Transport Systems. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 1751-956X .- 1751-9578. - 9782953171211 ; 5:2, s. 134-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores end-user experiences of adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems. A qualitative approach has been applied and data have been collected by means of focus group interviews. A qualitative content analysis was carried out to analyse and interpret collected data. In total the study consists of three focus group sessions with five to seven participants in each. Themes explored include interaction between user and system, functional limitations and trust, and system effects on driving behaviour. Key findings include reported driving behaviour changes as, for instance, an increasing tendency to stay in the right lane as well as users' conception of system functionality from which it can be concluded that end-users of ACC carry rough mental models of the system. A potentially hazardous situation for other road-users following the use of ACC is highlighted and discussed. In addition, some features desired by the end-users are discussed, for example, the call for conventional cruise control functionality when owing to weather conditions functional limitations are apparent.

  • Semi-automated versus highly automated driving in critical situations caused by automation failures
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part F. - : Elsevier BV. - 1369-8478 .- 1873-5517.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vehicle automation and automation failures on driving performance. Previous studies have revealed problems with driving performance in situations with automation failures and attributed this to drivers being out-of-the-loop. It was therefore hypothesized that driving performance is safer with lower than with higher levels of automation. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that driving performance would be affected by the extent of the automation failure. A moving base driving simulator was used. The design contained semi-automated and highly automated driving combined with complete, severe, and moderate deceleration failures. In total the study involved 36 participants. The results indicate that driving performance degrades when the level of automation increases. Furthermore, it is indicated that car drivers are worse at handling complete than partial deceleration failures.

  • Development and implementation of Mobility-as-a-Service : A qualitative study of barriers and enabling factors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research, Part A: Policy and Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 131, s. 283-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) has been argued as part of the solution to prevalent transport problems. However, progress from pilots to large-scale implementation has hitherto been slow. The aim of the research reported in this paper was to empirically and in-depth investigate how, and to what extent, different factors affect the development and implementation of MaaS. A framework was developed, with a basis in institutional theory and the postulation that formal as well informal factors on different analytical levels (macro, meso and micro) must be considered. The research was organised as a multiple case study in Finland and Sweden and a qualitative approach was chosen for data collection and analysis. A number of factors with a claimed impact on the development and implementation of MaaS was revealed. At the macro level, these factors included legislation concerning transport, innovation and public administration, and the presence (or not) of a shared vision for MaaS. At the meso level, (the lack of) appropriate business models, cultures of collaboration, and assumed roles and responsibilities within the MaaS ecosystem were identified as significant factors. At the micro level, people’s attitudes and habits were recognised as important factors to be considered. However, how the ‘S’ in MaaS fits (or not) the transport needs of the individual/household appears to play a more important role in adoption or rejection of MaaS than what has often been acknowledged in previous papers on MaaS. The findings presented in this paper provide several implications for public and private sector actors. Law-making authorities can facilitate MaaS developments by adjusting relevant regulations and policies such as transport-related subsidies, taxation policies and the definition of public transport. Regional and local authorities could additionally contribute to creating conducive conditions for MaaS by, for example, planning urban designs and transport infrastructures to support service-based travelling. Moreover, private actors have key roles to play in future MaaS developments, as both public and private transport services are needed if MaaS is to become a viable alternative to privately owned cars. Thus, the advance of MaaS business models that benefit all involved actors is vital for the prosperity of the emerging MaaS ecosystem.

  • Use-centred design of medical and health care technology: a pilot study of field tests as a development tool
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1752-6426 .- 1752-6418. ; 5:1, s. 11-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the project described in the paper was to develop a process through which users, staff as well as patients, can be involved in field evaluations of medical and health-care technology. Interviews with different stakeholders and the experiences from four case studies have led to the following conclusions: Users have the potential to act as active evaluators rather than passive subjects or participants only. However, user involvement in field evaluations must be supported by a formation of facilitators or ‘door openers’ to the health-care organization, moderators enhancing the dialogue between developers and users, and mentors for the users acting as evaluators.

  • System representations formats and their influence on user experience evaluations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IADIS International Journal on Computer Science and Information Systems. - Lisbon : IADIS Press. - 1646-3692. ; 13:1, s. 96-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge is lacking on the choice and use of representations in a design process when seeking to investigate user experiences. Two types of representations (a storyboard and an interactive prototype) of the same system were used in a user experience evaluation involving 24 participants to investigate how different representation formats influence participants' responses to interactive systems. Data from a questionnaire and individual interviews were compared. Very few differences in questionnaire responses were found. However, the interactive prototype gave rise to more design proposals as well as more personal reflections on experiences although with a focus on interface design details. The storyboard elicited more responses on the core ideas of the concept, but less grounded in reflections on personal use. The differences are attributed to how each representation managed to convey interactivity and context, resulting in differences in experienced agency. It is therefore suggested that there is a need for further research, but with less focus on the type of system representation and more focus on how the content and affordances of system representations can be designed to elicit rich and personal reflections on user experience in early design phases.

  • Inviting travelers to the smorgasbord of sustainable urban transport : evidence from a MaaS field trial
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Transportation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0049-4488 .- 1572-9435. ; 45:6, s. 1655-1670
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept, UbiGo, was implemented in Gothenburg, Sweden, and used for a 6-month period by 195 individuals in 83 households. Four participant subgroups were identified: Car shedders, Car accessors, Simplifiers, and Economizers. A qualitative analysis revealed that the subgroups had different reasons to join the service and different expectations of the change that would occur on the basis of the altered preconditions offered by the service. Previous car users reduced their use of private car and increased their use of public transport and active modes. Participants who did not have access to a privately-owned car but thought they needed one discovered that they managed well without. Other participants were reinforced in their existing behaviors but in ways they did not envisage, depending on which goals they had at the outset of the trial. Overall, the participants were also satisfied with the service, as well as with stated changes and non-changes, even if this in some cases meant more planning. Based on the empirical findings it could be argued that a service approach, such as UbiGo, has the potential to reduce the need for private car ownership, and enable people to change their mode choices and travel patterns. The potential relies however on a number of specific features of the service of which flexibility and a need- rather than a mode-based approach are key features.

  • Realism of overtaking situations in motion based driving simulators
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Road Safety and Simulation International Conference RSS2012, October 23-25, 2013, Rome, Italy. ; , s. (1-12)
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The credibility of the research results of driving simulator studies is highly dependent on the realism that the simulator is capable of producing. A key component is therefore how realistic the driving is perceived by the drivers (test subjects). Overtaking is a frequently occurring traffic situation (as well as one of the highest risk manoeuvres). The aim of the present study was to enhance the perceived realism of overtaking situations in a motion-based driving simulator by introduce aerodynamic forces and moments. An earlier developed real time model of the aerodynamic forces and moments was been implemented and tested in a study with test drivers. With an appropriate scaling of the forces and torques it was shown that the perceived realism can be enhanced by the introduction of these effects.
