  • The evolving domain of entrepreneurship research
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 41:4, s. 913-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on entrepreneurship has flourished in recent years and is evolving rapidly. This article explores the history of entrepreneurship research, how the research domain has evolved, and its current status as an academic field. The need to concretize these issues stems partly from a general interest in defining the current research domain and partly from the more specific tasks confronting the prize committee of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Entrepreneurship has developed in many sub-fields within several disciplines-primarily economics, management/business administration, sociology, psychology, economic and cultural anthropology, business history, strategy, marketing, finance, and geography-representing a variety of research traditions, perspectives, and methods. We present an analytical framework that organizes our thinking about the domain of entrepreneurship research by specifying elements, levels of analysis, and the process/context. An overview is provided of where the field stands today and how it is positioned relative to the existing disciplines and new research fields upon which it draws. Areas needed for future progress are highlighted, particularly the need for a rigorous dynamic theory of entrepreneurship that relates entrepreneurial activity to economic growth and human welfare. Moreover, applied work based on more careful design as well as on theoretical models yielding more credible and robust estimates seems also highly warranted.

  • Elite European Universities and the R&D Subsidiaries of Multinational Enterprises
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: McKelvey, M. and M. Holmén (2009). Learning to Compete European Universities: From Social Institutions to Knowledge Business. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781848440012
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter analyzes why large multinational firms are willing to invest resources in long-term collaboration with leading universities. This chapter is based on interviews with the multinationals at universities in Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The issue of how and why multinational corporations are willing to invest in longer-term collaboration with universities relates back to the core of the ‘positive’ interpretation of the knowledge society for Europe – namely how to remain attract node for R&D. This chapter thus moves to the perspective of the firm, in their interactions with university-based researchers active in top universities in different fields.

  • Governance of Regional Innovation Systems: An Evolutionary Conceptual Model of How Firms Engage
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management proceedings, Vancouver, Canada. - 0065-0668. ; 2015:2364, s. 1-25
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws upon insights from social science, in order to propose a conceptualization of the governance of a regional innovation system. We are specifically interested in ones initiated through public policy and aiming to stimulate the competitiveness of firms through developing new technological knowledge through collaborative research involving different organizations. We are assuming firms choose whether, when and how to collaborate. This paper proposes a conceptual model, which focuses upon the governance processes at the regional level of this translation of knowledge into innovation and entrepreneurship. The underlying argumentation for the model is built from existing research. We interpret that regional innovation governance depends upon capacity building among three heterogeneous organizations – namely university-government-industry. This represents a case of a polycentric, adaptive, complex and self-organizing system, whereby collective action is supported by norms and institutions in order to develop a region resource pool. Hence, our expectation is that our conceptual model will help explain why different outcomes are possible. The concluding section discusses a future research agenda, by going further to explore how to define and analyze the attributes (mechanisms) enabling governance of a regional innovation system as well as to analyze how public policy and firms engage.

  • Academic Patenting in Europe: Evidence on France, Italy from the KEINS database
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Research Evaluation. ; 17:2 (June), s. 16-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper provides summary statistics from the KEINS database on academic patenting in France,Italy, and Sweden. It shows that academic scientists in those countries have signed many more patentsthan previously estimated. This re-evaluation of academic patenting comes by considering all patentssigned by academic scientists active in 2004, both those assigned to universities and the many moreheld by business companies, governmental organizations, and public laboratories. Specific institutionalfeatures of the university and research systems in the three countries contribute to explaining theseownership patterns, which are remarkably different from those observed in the USA. In the light ofthese new data, European universities’ contribution to domestic patenting appears not to be much lessintense than that of their US counterparts.

  • Investigating the complexity facing academic entrepreneurs in science and engineering : the complementarities of research performance, networks and support structures in commercialisation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Cambridge Journal of Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0309-166X .- 1464-3545. ; 36:3, s. 751-780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relative importance, and specific role, of academic entrepreneurship in society has long focused upon productivity in terms of the commercialisation of research. Public policy is an instrument used in different countries to stimulate start-up companies, including attempts to influence national institutions, university structures and the incentives for individual researchers. This paper contributes with an analysis of Sweden, which has retained the 'professor's privilege', whereby the individual retains inventor rights and can choose to allocate ownership rights. The descriptive results of the survey revealed that academics have positive attitudes to commercialisation and relatively satisfactory commercialisation output. This paper examines the complementarities of research performance, networks and support structure in explaining commercialisation amongst university researchers in science and engineering in Sweden. The results show that publishing is positively correlated with commercialisation and that support structures play an important role through technology transfer offices, courses and incubators. The paper ends by using these results in order to discuss the implications for public policy.

  • The role of founder knowledge in the survival and growth of knowledge intensive new ventures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 17th International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society Conference: "Innovation, Catch-up, and Sustainable Development.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines the impacts of three types of founder and founder team knowledge on the survival and growth of knowledge-intensive new ventures: entrepreneurial, same-industry, and academic work knowledge. We utilize unique survey data of young, small European firms across sectors, which have been matched with data on subsequent firm performance. In terms of likelihood of survival, our results indicate the importance of previous entrepreneurial work knowledge and same-industry work knowledge. In terms of growth, our results using quantile regression indicate that both entrepreneurial work knowledge and academic work knowledge from previous work experience are positively associated with high growth rates, whereas results for same-industry work knowledge are mixed.

  • Sleeping Beauties in Nanotechnology.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The ISS 2018 Conference, The International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society Conference, 2-4 July 2018, Seoul, Korea.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the patterns of patent citations in nanotechnology. We apply the concept of sleeping beauty in order to identify patents which have been “sleeping” for some time but made a great technological impact in terms of citations when they “woke up”. In order to do that we categorize the patents into three different groups: the sleepers, the beauties and, by combining these two, the sleeping beauties. We present statistics and econometric models which show their distribution in nanotechnology as well as an exploration of the factors affecting the probability of a patent to fall in each category. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of particular interest and possible implications to the citations patterns and to the sleeping beauty phenomenon. We test two hypotheses in order to test which factors affect the probability of being a sleeping beauty. The first hypothesis is related to patent ownership and the second related to basic and applied nature of patents. Preliminary results show that sleeping beauties are particularly relevant to the nanotechnology field. It is also scattered within few specific IPC subclasses. When it comes to the factors of leading to a sleeping beauty patent the question remains a mystery since the models show a different pattern than the other two categories.
