  • Modeling and Digital Predistortion of Class-D Outphasing RF Power Amplifiers
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on microwave theory and techniques. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 60:6, s. 1907-1915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a direct model structure for describing class-D outphasing power amplifiers (PAs) and a method for digitally predistorting these amplifiers. The direct model structure is based on modeling differences in gain and delay, nonlinear interactions between the two paths, and differences in the amplifier behavior. The digital predistortion method is designed to operate only on the input signals phases, to correct for both amplitude and phase mismatches. This eliminates the need for additional voltage supplies to compensate for gain mismatch. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanModel and predistortion performance are evaluated on a 32-dBm peak-output-power class-D outphasing PA in CMOS with on-chip transformers. The excitation signal is a 5-MHz downlink WCDMA signal with peak-to-average power ratio of 9.5 dB. Using the proposed digital predistorter, the 5-MHz adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR) was improved by 13.5 dB, from -32.1 to -45.6 dBc. The 10-MHz ACLR was improved by 6.4 dB, from -44.3 to -50.7 dBc, making the amplifier pass the 3GPP ACLR requirements.

  • Two novel memory polynomial models for modeling of RF power amplifiers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International journal of microwave and wireless technologies. - 1759-0795 .- 1759-0787. ; 7:1, s. 19-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two novel memory polynomial models are derived based on physical knowledge of a general power amplifier (PA). The derivations are given in detail to facilitate derivations of other model structures. The model error in terms of normalized mean square error (NMSE) and adjacent channel error power ratio (ACEPR) of the novel model structures are compared to that of established models based on the number of parameters using data measured on two different amplifiers, one high-power base-station PA and one low-power general purpose amplifier. The novel models show both lower NMSE and ACEPR for any chosen number of parameters compared to the established models. The low model errors make the novel models suitable candidates for both modeling and digital predistortion.

  • Characterization of concurrent dual-band Power Amplifiers using a dual two-tone excitation signal
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. - : IEEE Press. - 0018-9456 .- 1557-9662. ; :99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method to characterize the memory effects in a nonlinear concurrent dual-band transmitter is presented. It is an extension of the conventional two tone test for power amplifiers to concurrent dual band transmitters. The output signal of a concurrent dual-band transmitter is affected not only by intermodulation products but also by cross-modulation products. In one frequency band, the transmitter is excited by a two tone signal which frequency separation is swept. In the second band the transmitter is concurrently excited by an other two tone signal with slightly wider frequency separation. The frequency difference of the two signals is fixed during the frequency sweep. The two tone test is made at different power levels. The upper and lower third-order inter- and cross-modulation products are measured. The asymmetry between the upper and lower third-order inter- and cross-modulation products are measures of the transmitter's memory effects. The measurement results show that the memory effects are more dominant in the third-order intermodulation products than in the cross modulation products. An error analysis and system calibration was performed and measurement results for two different devices are presented.

  • Blind spectrum sensing for cognitive radios using discriminant analysis : A novel approach
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. - : IEEE. - 0018-9456 .- 1557-9662. ; 62:11, s. 2912-2921
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a new spectrum sensing technique for cognitive radios based on discriminant analysis called spectrum discriminator. The presented technique uses the knowledge of the noise uncertainty and a probabilistic validation to overcome the limitations of the discriminant analysis. A comparative study between the proposed technique and the maximum-minimum eigenvalue detection has been performed based on two performance metrics: the probability of false alarm and the probability of detection. The spectrum discriminator has been further developed to a peel-off technique where all primary users can be detected. The performance of the spectrum discriminator and the peel-off technique has been tested on simulations and experimentally verified. The comparative study is based on simulations as well as measurements.

  • Multi-Interference Detection Algorithm using Discriminant Analysis in Industrial Environments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2013). - New York : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479902248 ; , s. 5600-5604
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a technique to detect multiple impulsive interference in an industrial environment is proposed and evaluated. The technique is based on discriminant analysis which iteratively peels-off the impulsive interferences. The probability of detection of the technique is tested with and without the iterative peeling-off part. The simulations show that the SIR can be improved by applying the detection technique and then blank or clip the impulsive interference components. The improvement in the SIR depends on the impulsive interference parameters and it can reach up to 17 dB.

  • Spectrum Sensing Challenges : Blind Sensing and Sensing Optimization
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine. - 1094-6969 .- 1941-0123. ; 19:2, s. 44-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By any measure, wireless communications is one of the most evolving fields in engineering. This, in return, has imposed many challenges, especially in handling the hunger for higher data rates in the next generation wireless networks. Among these challenges is how to provide the needed resources in terms of the electromagnetic radio spectrum for these networks. In this regard, cognitive radio (CR) based on dynamic spectrum access (DSA) has been attracting huge attention as a promising solution for more efficient utilization of the available radio spectrum. DSA is based on finding and opportunistically accessing the free-of-use portions of spectrum. To facilitate DSA, spectrum sensing can be used. However, spectrum sensing faces many challenges in different aspects. Such aspects include blind sensing and sensing optimization, which are both to a great extent measurement challenges. We discuss different contributions in addressing these two challenges in this article.

  • Spectrum Sensing through Spectrum Discriminator and Maximum Minimum Eigenvalue Detector : A Comparative Study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE I2MTC - International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, Proceedings. - New York : IEEE. - 9781457717710 - 9781457717734 ; , s. 2252-2256
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a new spectrum sensing technique for cognitive radios based on discriminant analysis called spectrum discriminator and compare it with the maximum minimum eigenvalue detector. The common feature between those two techniques is that neither prior knowledge about the system noise level nor the primary user signal, that might occupy the band under sensing, is required. Instead the system noise level will be derived from the received signal. The main difference between both techniques is that the spectrum discriminator is a non-parametric technique while the maximum minimum eigenvalue detector is a parametric technique. The comparative study between both has been done based on two performance metrics: the probability of false alarm and the probability of detection. For the spectrum discriminator an accuracy factor called noise uncertainty is defined as the level over which the noise energy may vary. Simulations are performed for different values of noise uncertainty for the spectrum discriminator and different values for the number of received samples and smoothing factor for the maximum minimum eigenvalue detector.

  • Digital Baseband Modeling and Correction of Radio Frequency Power Amplifiers
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aspects related to behavioral modeling and correction of distortions for radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) are treated in the thesis.    When evaluating the performance of a behavioral model it is important to, first of all, use an evaluation criterion, and second, make sure that the criterion actually tells something about the behavior one wishes to describe. This is used in the weighted error spectral power ratio (WESPR) criterion by means of a frequency dependent weighting function. When the parameters of the models are estimated a suitable error criterion should likewise be used. The frequency weighting function in the WESPR is used in the extraction of the parameters. It is shown on two types of PAs that the model performance measured as WESPR can be improved while the model complexity is reduced compared to the standard frequency neutral criterion.    When building a model of a system it is advantageous to take account of the physical structure and incorporate this knowledge into the model. It can improve model performance and possibly reduce the number of parameters. By starting from a physically motivated nonlinear model of a RF PA, the commonly used memory polynomial (MP) models are derived. Additionally, three novel MP model structures are derived. Using data measured on a PA it is found that two of these model structures have lower model errors while using fewer parameters than models previously published in the literature.    Methods to increase the power efficiency and the linearity of RF PAs have been investigated. One of these methods is digital predistortion (DPD) which improves the linearity, thus facilitating operation at higher power levels which improves power efficiency. The other method is a signal shaping method that makes the signal more favorable to the PA by reducing the highest peaks to lower values. It is experimentally shown that the combination of DPD and signal shaping results in an increase of power efficiency in the order of 2-4 times. An instability in the feedback loop that updates the parameters of the DPD was also identified and two solutions were proposed. One solution changes the parameters of the DPD in such a way that the instability is avoided and the other changes the signal to avoid high amplitudes.    The nonlinear effects of class-D outphasing amplifiers are considered. Four model structures are proposed and evaluated on data measured from two amplifiers. In order to reduce the distortions in the output signal from the amplifiers an algorithm using constant envelope amplitude (purely phase-modulated) signals is proposed. The DPD is evaluated and found to reduce the distortions in a state-of-the-art 32 dBm class-D outphasing PA to make it fulfill the linearity requirements for downlink signals used in the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS).
