  • Barriers to research utilization and research use among registered nurses working in the care of older people. Does the BARRIERS Scale discriminate between research users and non-research uses on perception of barriers?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Implementation Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1748-5908. ; 3:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundOne strategy to enhance research use and change current practice is to identify barriers and then implement tailored interventions to reduce these barriers. In nursing, the BARRIERS scale has been frequently used to identify nurses' perceptions of barriers to research utilization. However, this scale has not been applied to care of older people, and only one study has investigated how identified barriers link to research utilization. Therefore, the purpose of this study was twofold: to describe RNs' perceptions of barriers to and facilitators of research utilization and to examine the validity of the BARRIERS scale in relation to research use.MethodsA cross-sectional survey design was used and registered nurses (RNs) working in the care of older people participated (response rate 67%, n = 140/210). Two questionnaires, the BARRIERS scale and the Research Utilization Questionnaire (RUQ), were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive and bivariate inferential statistics.ResultsCharacteristics of the organization and the presentation of research findings were rated as the most prominent barriers. The three items most frequently reported as barriers were: the nurse is isolated from knowledgeable colleagues with whom to discuss the research (89%); the facilities are inadequate for implementation (88%); and, the relevant literature is not compiled in one place (81%). Surveyed RNs suggested more support from unit managers and better availability of user-friendly reports in Swedish to enhance research use.The RNs reported a modest use of research. A weak but significant correlation was found between the Research Use index in RUQ and the Presentation subscale in the BARRIERS scale (r = -0.289, p < 0.01), suggesting that the RNs reporting more research use were less likely to perceive presentation of research as a barrier. Dividing the sample into research users (n = 29) and non-research users (n = 105), the research users rated significantly lower on the subscales Presentation, Nurse and Research in the BARRIERS scale.ConclusionThe BARRIERS scale revealed differences in the perception of barriers between research users and non-research users. Thus, methodologically the scale appears useful in identifying some types of barriers to research utilization but not organizational barriers. The identified barriers, however, are general and wide-ranging, making it difficult to design useful specific interventions.

  • Motivational factors for occupational safety and health improvements : A mixed-method study within the Swedish equine sector
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Safety Science. - : Elsevier. - 0925-7535 .- 1879-1042. ; 159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A well-functioning systematic occupational safety and health management is beneficial for both individuals and organizations, and employee motivation seems to be crucial for positive outcomes. Occupational safety and health issues are a major concern for the Swedish equine sector since the work environment in horse stables is known to be characterized by low mechanization, high physical workloads, and high injury risks. The purpose of this study was to gain an increased understanding of how systematic occupational safety and health management is performed and which factors that influence motivation for occupational safety and health improvements in the Swedish equine sector. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods study, based on quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, was conducted. Various statistical analyses were performed to obtain quantitative data and an abductive applied thematic analysis was applied for the qualitative data. The results indicate that both intrinsic motivators, i.e. attitudes, values, and influence, as well as contextual factors such as motivational management, occupational culture, and workplace resources, influence compliance in systematic occupational safety and health management and participation in occupational safety and health improvements, which in turn affect workplace outcomes regarding safety and health. The positive relationship found between an implemented and functioning systematic occupational safety and health management and employee motivation for occupational safety and health improvements indicate the importance of employee involvement and participation. Understanding the motivational factors for occupational safety and health improvements from an employee perspective is an important step to creating healthy and sustainable workplaces.

  • Ekofeminism i teologin : Genusuppfattning, natursyn och gudsuppfattning hos Anne Primavesi, Catherine Keller och Carol Christ
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a theological study exploring views of gender, nature and God as articulated in the ecofeminist theologies of Anne Primavesi, Catherine Keller and Carol Christ. The author takes ecofeminist theology to be a meeting-place for ecophilosophy, feminism and religion. The aim is to explore tensions and problems within each theologian's work as well as areas where they are more in congruence. Taking her departure from the results of the analysis, the author suggests that there are some problems that should be further discussed and standpoints that need to be qualified in the ongoing development of ecofeminist theology.Methodologically, the categories of gender, nature and God are analysed on three different levels. 1.Points of departure - the theories and analytical views that shape each category. 2.Worldview - symbols, metaphors and further explanations of the character of each category. 3.Context - the three theologians' choice of problems and alternatives in "real life" according to each category. The analysis shows that there are tensions in the conceptualisation of nature, for example between feminism as a human-centred perspective on one hand, and deep ecological and ecocentric approaches on the other. There are also tensions between the concept of God and ecocentric approaches. Lines of thought that are congruent are, for example, that body or female experience must be reclaimed. Nature, humanity and spirit are seen by all three theologians as being deeply integrated in space or place. Problems that need to be further discussed and developed are, for example, the perspective of values according to the points of views of humanity and nature, and the weak connections to the Western context.Key-words: ecofeminism, ecofeminist theology, goddess, thealogy, Anne Primavesi, Catherine Keller, Carol P.Christ

  • "Social Issues Open up Social Studies": Upper Secondary Teachers´Conceptions of, and Didactical Reflections upon the Subject
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstads universitet. - 2000-9879. ; :2017:2, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article identifies and discusses conceptions of the Swedish school subject social studies in upper secondary school through an empirical study consisting of qualitative interviews with seven teachers of social studies. The curriculum declares that teaching social studies shall be done with “social issues as the point of departure”. The analysis focuses on the teachers’ didactical reflections on the subject specific concept of social issues in relation to their own teaching practice. Conclusions that are made are that the approach of teaching social studies with ‘social issues as the  point of departure’ leads to conceptions of social studies as being a subject that is open to the unexpected and that transcends its borders, and with its purpose seen as its content, or put differently: the ‘what’ defined through, or as, its ‘why’. It seems more relevant to discuss what the social issues, as a didactical concept, do to the subject rather than what they are. The very quest for a certain core in the subject is being challenged. A reflection on these results leads to a discussion on the potential intrinsic value of social issues in teaching social studies.

  • The Leaving of Ireland : Migration and belonging in Irish literature and film
  • 2015. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Leaving of Ireland brings together an international group of scholars to reflect critically on the unfolding nature of the experience of Irish cultural identity at a time when Ireland is struggling to adjust to the shattering impacts of globalization and religious scandals of recent decades. Looking back over the last two centuries, the volume considers a range of literary and filmic works that have sought to articulate something of this experience and its multiple locations. The essays revisit crucial constituents of Irish history and self-perception at the micro-level, exploring the representation of individual experiences of migration and identification and the definition of a sense of belonging. They also examine these issues at the macro-level, looking at larger politico-historical transformations, national affiliations and changed social and geographical landscapes. The book is organized around key themes including history, mobility, memory and place and addresses the works of a wide range of authors, including Emily Lawless, Frank McCourt, Sinead Morrissey, Paul Muldoon, Joseph O’Connor, J.M. Synge and W.B. Yeats.
