  • Speciella yrken? Specialpedagogers och speciallärares arbete och utbildning : En enkätstudie
  • 2015
  • swepub:Mat_report_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • Forskningsprojektet ”Speciella yrken?

  • Patients' perception of improvement after orthognathic surgery : Pilot study

    • We aimed to find out what patients thought of their quality of life after they had had an orthognathic operation. Thirty-two patients returned three questionnaires and 15 were further interrogated by telephone. Preoperatively the patients mentioned mainly functional problems as a reason for asking for the operation, but expectation of aesthetic improvement was also an important factor. They were generally satisfied with the outcome of the operation. Postoperative improvement was mentioned in terms of chewing, appearance, headaches, and bullying. Patients felt more secure in company with other people postoperatively. We conclude that patients' perceptions after orthognathic operations were generally favourable but there is a need for improved information to patients during the treatment.

  • Using Metrics of a Mixture Effect and Nutrition from an Observational Study for Consideration towards Causal Inference

    • Environmental exposures to a myriad of chemicals are associated with adverse health effects in humans, while good nutrition is associated with improved health. Single chemical in vivo and in vitro studies demonstrate causal links between the chemicals and outcomes, but such studies do not represent human exposure to environmental mixtures. One way of summarizing the effect of the joint action of chemical mixtures is through an empirically weighted index using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. My Nutrition Index (MNI) is a metric of overall dietary nutrition based on guideline values, including for pregnant women. Our objective is to demonstrate the use of an index as a metric for more causally linking human exposure to health outcomes using observational data. We use both a WQS index of 26 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and MNI using data from the SELMA pregnancy cohort to conduct causal inference using g-computation with counterfactuals for assumed either reduced prenatal EDC exposures or improved prenatal nutrition. Reducing the EDC exposure using the WQS index as a metric or improving dietary nutrition using MNI as a metric, the counterfactuals in a causal inference with one SD change indicate significant improvement in cognitive function. Evaluation of such a strategy may support decision makers for risk management of EDCs and individual choices for improving dietary nutrition.

    • Objectivethe aim of this study was to compare the use of synthetic oxytocin for augmentation, duration of labour and birth and infant outcomes in nulliparous women randomised to birth on a birth seat or any other position.Study designa randomised controlled trial in Sweden where 1002 women were randomised to birth on a birth seat (experimental group) or birth in any other position (control group). Data were collected between November 2006 and July 2009. The outcome measurements included synthetic oxytocin augmentation, duration of the second stage of labour and fetal outcome. Analysis was by intention to treat.Settingsouthern Sweden.Findingsthe main findings of this study were that women randomised to the experimental group had a statistically significant shorter second stage of labour than women randomised to the control group. There were no differences between the groups for use of synthetic oxytocin augmentation or for neonatal outcomes.Conclusionswomen allocated to the birth seat had a significantly shorter second stage of labour despite similar numbers of women subjected to synthetic oxytocin augmentation in the study groups. The adverse neonatal outcomes did not differ between groups. The birth seat can be suggested as non-medical intervention used to reduce duration of second stage labour and birth. The birth seat can be suggested as a non-medical intervention that may facilitate reduced duration of the second stage of labour. Furthermore it is recommended that caregivers, both midwives and midwifery students, should learn skills to assist women in using a variety of birth positions.

    • Till Tabbas (To Tabas, 1959) is Finnish-Swedish author Willy Kyrklund’s (1921-2009) account of a journey through Iran in the 1950s. While ostensibly the object of Kyrklund’s text is modern Iran and early Islamic Persia, on an ideational level To Tabbas explores existential issues that are most readily associated with certain intellectual environments in post-war Europe. In one sense, the Persian "Orient" is to Kyrklund an archive of texts and images, which he uses in a discussion about what he sees as the terms of human existence. Kyrklund discusses the terms of human existence by emphasising the perceived sameness between the modern Western subject and the Persian Muslim and the masters of Sufi poetry. He uses the concept of "man" to refer to the common ground that he imagines exists between them. However, as this essay shows, "man" as an abstract category functions as a placeholder for the post-war European male intellectual, desperate in his longing for a higher purpose, and certain that no such higher purpose exists. This tendency of semantic ambiguity is discussed from a postcolonial perspective in the last section of this article.

  • Föräldraidentiteter i livsberättelser
  • 2006
  • swepub:Mat_doctoralthesis_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • This dissertation deals with relations between parents and child institutions such as childcare, school and child health centers in terms of an institutionalization of childhood and expressions of parental identities in life stories. The empirical study consists of thematic life story interviews with parents focusing on their experiences of meeting and relating to these child institutions. A perspective on life stories as socially situated action and identity performance is adopted that views the life stories as co-constructed in between the interviewee and the interviewer. The aim of the dissertation is to contribute to an understanding of relations between parents and child institutions in Sweden that takes as its point of departure the expressions of parental identities. Methodologically, the dissertation also aims to further develop a way of working with life stories that makes the interviewer visible as co-constructor of life stories and expressions of identity. The analyses is focused on expressions of parental identities through the storytelling and in the stories told. Parental identities took shape and form as performances and constructions of, for example, social subordination in relation to preschool staff and other parents, helpful intervention in school helping an inexperienced teacher, worries about children being different from other children and not fitting in at preschool and of gratefulness for help and support from childcare staff when being short of time and money. The identity expressions were then analyzed in relation to recurrent discourses in research on relations between parents and childinstitutions. The results show that dominant discourses of relations between parents and child institutions tend to construct parents as a homogenous group, thereby concealing how gender, social class, ethnicity and age, and the subsequent different constructions of children and childhood, structure and influence the relations between parents and child institutions and thereby also the institutionalization of childhood.

  • (Mediated) cosmopolitanism as symbolic violence
  • 2014
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • The notions of a “mediated cosmopolitanism”, a “global imagined community” and an “imagined cosmopolitanism” speak of a cosmopolitan opportunism gaining ground in contemporary media and communication studies. This line of research tends to epistemologically situate human beings exclusively as users or audiences of media. The risk by such a media-centric focus is to confine oneself to the question of “what the media does to people”. By understanding users and audiences of potentially global media as contextualized social agents we engage with the relationship between cosmopolitanism and the media from a different vantage point. Our media sociological perspective insists on accounting for social context, and so we turn to the question of how classified social agents classify the contemporary media landscape as gateways to the wider world. What emerges in our qualitative and quantitative data is a pattern of social reproduction by way of cultural distinction – agents strong on cultural capital is particularly prone to approach the media landscape as an avenue for cosmopolitan socialization. There is thus reason to question the universalizing rhetoric pertaining to notions of a “mediated cosmopolitanism”.
