- The aim of this thesis is to examine the relations between local government and voluntary organisations in two Swedish cities - Stockholm and Göteborg - with regard to the issue of homelessness, and to analyse how these relations have changed during the 1990's. A further aim is to explore to what extent different localities, due to variations in the economic and political context, vary in their responses to influences and pressures from the outside, e.g. from the central state. These variations, it is assumed, result in different approaches to local welfare production and, as part of that, different views on how to care for the homeless, and also create differences in the relations between local government and voluntary organisations. A qualitative methodology has been used in the two case studies. Most of the data have been gathered through personal interviews with informants from the local governments and the voluntary organisations respectively, supplemented with different kinds of documentary information. The comparative analysis indicates that, although social policy in Sweden is rather strictly regulated at the central state level, there are differences on the local level with respect to relations between the local government and voluntary organisations. In short, there are local modes of welfare production. In Stockholm, the voluntary organisations cooperate with local government agencies, but they have in particular staked out a niche of their own - to care for the most deprived of the homeless. The voluntary organisations in Göteborg, in contrast, have become an integrated part of a restructured local government.

- Qualification is the competence that is required for tasks related to wage labour. Competence is all the forms of knowledge possessed by the staff as well as their personal abilities. When qualification is related to competence, possible competence deficiencies become apparent. The first step in the process of describing competence deficiency is to specify the concept of qualification. This is achieved by means of ’social tests’, which may be considered as relevant data for controlling the improvement of competence. Empirical data are used to develop ’social tests’ relating to qualification for two staff categories.

In the first person and in the house : The house chronotope in four works by American women writers

- The house looms large in American literature and plays a significant part in American society and history. This study uses Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope to examine the house in Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), Elizabeth Stoddard's The Morgesons (1862), Octavia Butler's Kindred (1979), and Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping (1980). All four texts were written by American women and have female narrator-protagonists.At a time when it has been widely acknowledged that universals and binary oppositions have serious critical and political limitations, there is a need for approaches that can bring together multiple issues in criticism. This study proposes that the chronotope, which operates on several intra- and intertextual levels, offers such an approach. Employing the house chronotope as a focal point, I find it possible to probe the connections and tensions in the four works between time and space, generic concerns, ideology, first-person narration, and identity formation based on constructions of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nationality.The study furthermore investigates the interplay between the house chronotope and the chronotope of the town and also suggests that one may see Sylvie in Housekeeping as representing a chronotope of her own. Moreover, I address the question of the literary house chronotope's stability over time as indicated in these four works by four American women writers.

Model-based and matched-filterbank signal analysis

- The dissertation deals with model-based and matched-filterbank signal analysis. The matched-filterbank (MAFI) spectral estimation approach is introduced, and it is shown that both the amplitude spectrum Capon (ASC) and the amplitude and phase estimation (APES) spectral estimators can be expressed as MAFI spectral estimators. A combined estimation procedure for data with mixed spectrum is introduced, as well as ASC and APES implementations for real-valued data. Computationally efficient implementations of the 2-D power spectrum Capon (PSC) and the 1-D and 2-D ASC are proposed. An asymptotic Cramér-Rao bound for line-spectra estimation is derived. It is shown that the non-linear least squares method (NLSM) will asymptotically achieve the same statistical performance as the maximum likelihood method (MLM) even in the colored noise case. Sufficient conditions for identifiability are derived for known and unknown waveforms received through a multipath channel. Statistically efficient subspace-based estimators for the estimation of the time-delay and Doppler parameters are presented.

Företagsamhet föder framgång : Yrkeskarriärer och sociala nätverk bland företagarna i Sundsvall 1850-1900

- The present dissertation deals with the factors influencing the professional careers of mer-chants and craftsmen working in the Swedish town of Sundsvall between 1850 and 1900. The most important hypotheses are: To what degree did social origins influence an entre-preneur's opportunities for running his business? How many of the children of these busi-nessmen assumed and maintained their parents' social status upon attaining adulthood? What significance did the entrepreneur's spouse have for his business activities? To what degree were his economic activities influenced by joining local voluntary associations? By combining data culled from the parish registers of the Swedish Lutheran Church, the poll tax registers and the primary source material for national trade statistics, the author has been able to identify the individuals who worked as entrepreneurs in Sundsvall during the period under investigation, what they paid in business income tax each year, the profes-sional titles they possessed and the places in which they and their relatives resided during their lifetimes. The results show that the majority of the most successful younger entrepreneurs active in the town before the introduction of freedom of trade in Sweden in the year 1864 were mostly immigrants from other parts of the country, who had furthermore come from rela-tively modest backgrounds. However, the social and geographic origins of these entrepre-neur's wives has proven to be of central significance to the success of the business, in in-stances where she had been raised in a business family from Sundsvall. The professional skill of the entrepreneur together with his wife's familiarity with the town, in all likelihood also combined with her inherited cultural capital, contributed to creating a demand from the local populace for the goods or services sold by the company

- This doctoral thesis deals with Peder Sjogren’s (1905-1966) seven novels. By means of modern narratological instruments and with the emphasis laid on the thematic functions of the narrators, a central theme in Sjogren’s writing is uncovered. In all of Sjogren’s works the characters are tied together in a sense of guilt that is so strong that the ”fellowship” goes to the point of identification. Sjögren explores this theme by experimenting with different narrative techniques and by using a language with religious connotations.The narrators in Sjogren’s novels are engaged in existential projects; their functions are self-explorative, confessional and accusatory rather than communicative. In the analyses, analogies between Freudian psychoanalysis and the narrative situations in Sjogren’s novels are pointed out. The self-reflexive mirror is a prevalent metaphor in Sjogren’s writing, descriptive not only of the general structure of the novels but also of the ambivalent relationship between the characters. The metaphor of the mirror is interpreted both as a symbol of narcissistic escapism and of inevitable interdependence, a complicated relationship between a self-destructive tormentor and a godlike, aggressive and powerful victim.Intertextual links are established with texts by writers who were influential on the literary scene in the 1940s, especially Stig Dagerman and Jean Paul Sartre. The religious language and the Christian metaphors are interpreted in an existentialist and a phenomenological context.In a post-communicative reflection on the theme of the brotherhood of guilt, the thesis shows how Sjogren’s theme of guilt and identification invites a comparison with Emanuel Lévinas’s moral philosophy. In a final chapter striking similarities between the two writers are pointed out. Both writers find a structural analogy between the sacred encounter with the wounded face of the Other and the authentic encounter with death, and both writers interpret the moral responsibility for the Other as an obligation to beone’s brother’s keeper to the point of substitution.

- The central problem area of this dissertation concerns the connection between working life and parenthood. The main purpose is to develop an analytical strategy which validity is determined by the extent to which it can consider and cover the complexity of the conditions and practices of everyday life for working parents. Starting in an understanding of the concept life-mode as a sensitizing concept, an analytical model is developed and a Boolean approach is used to study the complex interrelation between working life and parenthood. In the dissertation the relationship between working life and parenthood is studied focusing on the work place. Parenthood, organization and gender are three key concepts which direct the analysis of the organizational forms everyday life take on. The empirical material of the dissertation comes from a questionnaire survey carried out in Sweden in 1992. The material consists of nine occupational groups, divided in women and men. A qualitative comparative method, developed by Charles C. Ragin, is used to compare organization-based adjustment situations. The factors of the analytical model are presented in binary form and tested against empirical data. The results are presented as equations that reflect the complexity of the interrelations between working life and parenthood through conjunctures of causal conditions, i e leading position, thedominance of one of the sexes at departmental level, children-specific scope of action, general scope of action, and the outcome, i e different adjustment strategies used by parents. The division of the adjustment strategies in three degrees of imposed restrictions on the work situation - everyday actions, smaller restrictions and bigger changes of the work situation.- is an attempt to account for the size of the work and family circles.

Management Control in Services. A Contingency Study of Responsibility Accounting in Highly Interactive Services

- This report examines the use of management control in services, with particular reference to the role of formal control systems in attributing and devolving responsibility within organizations. The study draws extensively on the service as well as the management control literature and advances an analytical framework based on a process-oriented approach to responsibility accounting. The study is primarily based on contingency theory, while some complementary perspectives are derived from agency theory. Two case studies are used to generate a theory of responsibility accounting in highly interactive services. The study combines deductive and inductive theorizing and makes a number of important contributions to service as well as management control research.
