  • Psychometric evaluation of “The 25-item Sex after MI Knowledge Test” in a Swedish context
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318. ; 26:1, s. 203-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The patients’ sexual life after a myocardial infarction is important for his/her quality of life. In spite of this, many patients are in doubt regarding their sex life after a myocardial infarction (MI) and the sexual information received, and counselling from health care providers has been seen to be insufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of ‘The 25-item Sex after MI Knowledge Test’ in a Swedish context. A convenience sample was recruited. The scale was translated into Swedish and completed by 79 former patients from The Heart and Lung Patients’ National Association on two occasions, with an interval of 2 weeks. The scale was tested for face and content validity, internal consistency and test–retest reliability. The result in this study indicates that the instrument has good face and content validity and displayed a moderate internal consistency (alpha 0.61). The instrument showed some level of instability in test–retest reliability with 60% of the items presenting moderate or strong agreement between the test and retest. Further studies that use this instrument in larger and more diverse samples are thus needed.

  • Psychometric evaluation of a Swedish version of Krantz Health Opinion Survey
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Open Journal of Nursing ( OJN). - 2162-5336, 2162-5344. ; 2:3, s. 181-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psy- chometric properties of a Swedish version of The Krantz Health Opinion Survey (KHOS). A conven- ience sample of 79 persons (47 men and 32 women) was recruited from The Heart and Lung Patients’ National Association at ten local meeting places in different areas in Sweden. The questionnaire was examined for face and content validity, internal con-sistency and test-retest reliability. The findings showed that the Swedish version of KHOS is accept- able in terms of face and content validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability over time among 79 individuals >65 years of age and with a cardiac disease. In conclusion, wider evaluations of the psy- chometric use of KHOS for other populations and settings are recommended.

  • Attitudes towards mental illness among health care students at Swedish universities : a follow-up study after completed clinical placement
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - Elsevier Sciencedirect. - 0260-6917. ; 29:6, s. 660-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to examine the changes in attitudes towards mental illness after theorethical education and clinical placement among students from university programmes preparing for different kinds of health professions. Three different questionnaries were used, measuring the level of familaritiy with mental illness and attitudes towards mental illness in general and toward specific mental illnesses. The data were collected on two occasions, before the theorethical course and after the completed clinical placement. The result showed that the attitudes toward mental illnes in general had changed in a less stigmatising direction after the clinical placement. On the other hand, attitudes toward specific illnesses did not show any major changes.

  • Test - retest reliability of two instruments for measuring public attitudes towards persons with mental illness.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: BMC psychiatry. - 1471-244X. ; 11, s. 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Research has identified stigmatization as a major threat to successful treatment of individuals with mental illness. As a consequence several anti-stigma campaigns have been carried out. The results have been discouraging and the field suffers from lack of evidence about interventions that work. There are few reports on psychometric data for instruments used to assess stigma, which thus complicates research efforts. The aim of the present study was to investigate test-retest reliability of the Swedish versions of the questionnaires: FABI and "Changing Minds" and to examine the internal consistency of the two instruments.METHOD: Two instruments, fear and behavioural intentions (FABI) and "Changing Minds", used in earlier studies on public attitudes towards persons with mental illness were translated into Swedish and completed by 51 nursing students on two occasions, with an interval of three weeks. Test-retest reliability was calculated by using weighted kappa coefficient and internal consistency using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient.RESULTS: Both instruments attain at best moderate test-retest reliability. For the Changing Minds questionnaire almost one fifth (17.9%) of the items present poor test-retest reliability and the alpha coefficient for the subscales ranges between 0.19 - 0.46. All of the items in the FABI reach a fair or a moderate agreement between the test and retest, and the questionnaire displays a high internal consistency, alpha 0.80.CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for development of psychometrically tested instruments within this field of research.

  • Attitudes in healthcare students towards mental illness
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences & Practice. - Nova Southeastern University. - 1540-580X. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of naturalistic educational interventions on attitudes towards persons with mental illness. Methods: In a pre-post test design, 456 students in vocational University programmes to become nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and public health workers were studied after a course in mental illness, using questionnaires focusing on familiarity with mental illness and attitudes towards the mentally ill in general and towards schizophrenia in particular. Results: The results revealed a significant improvement for the total group in their being afraid of people with mental illness in general and being more positive towards having mentally ill people living in their neighbourhood. Differences between the student groups were found. Some educational features positively influencing stigmatizing attitudes were identified. Conclusion: Education has some effect on attitudes towards patients with mental illness, mostly on fear. To understand the effective educational ingredients for change, further research is needed.

  • Migration och folkhälsa. : Tuberkulos i den svenska flyktingmottagningen under 1940- och 1950-talen.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Svenska historikermötet 2008.

  • Body image in adolescents with cerebral palsy
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child Health Care. - Greycoat Publishing. - 1367-4935. ; 13:1, s. 19-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study aims to describe important features of body image in adolescents with motor disabilities and compare them against similar features in able-bodied peers. Relational aspects of body image were given preference in a questionnaire distributed to 35 adolescents with cerebral palsy and 98 adolescents with no known disabilities. Similarities were shown, but also significant differences, indicating a less favourable body image in adolescents with cerebral palsy. It is paramount for young people who are constantly reminded of physical restrictions to experience body vitality. Professionals need to consider the importance of how they interact with young people when seeking to promote a positive body image

  • An Artificial Estrogen Receptor through Combinatorial Imprinting
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - 0947-6539. ; 18:46, s. 14773-14783
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymeric sorbents targeting endocrine-disrupting estrogen active compounds (EAC) were prepared by terpolymer imprinting using 17 beta-estradiol (E2) as template. From a group of eight functional monomers representing Bronsted acids, bases, hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors, as well as pi-interacting monomers, a terpolymer library that comprises all possible binary combinations of the functional monomers was prepared. Binding tests revealed that imprinted polymers exhibit a markedly higher affinity for E2 compared to nonimprinted polymers (NIPs) or polymers prepared by using single functional monomers. A combination of methacrylic acid (MAA) and p-vinylbenzoic acid offered a particularly promising lead polymer, displaying an imprinting factor of 17 versus 2.4 for a benchmark polymer prepared by using only MAA as functional monomer. The saturation capacities ascribed to imprinted sites were four to five times higher for this polymer compared to previously reported imprinted polymers. NMR titrations and molecular dynamics simulations corroborated these results, indicating an orthogonal preference of the two functional monomers with respect to the E2 3-OH and 17-OH groups. The optimized polymer exhibited a retentivity for EACs that correlates with their inhibitory effect on the natural receptor. By using the optimized molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in a model water-purification system, they were capable of completely removing ppb levels of a small group of EACs from water. This is in contrast to the performance of nonimprinted polymers and well-established sorbents for water purification (e.g., active carbon), which still contained detectable amounts of the compounds after treatment.

  • Conceptions of working capacity and health. The Social Authorities and the TB- refugees in Sweden ca 1950–1960
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss our research project “Conceptions of Healthy and Unhealthy. The reception of refugees unable to work in Sweden.”. We study how the social authorities in Sweden have handled questions concerning refugees in a historical perspective. We analyze the culture of the social authorities over time and the implications this culture has for the receptions of refugees today. The main and specific focus is on understanding and explaining the reception of refugees classified as unable to work. In this paper we present a case-study on one of theses groups, refugees with TB.

  • Porren inför lagen : Två fallstudier angående den officiella attityden till offentligt visad pornografisk film 1921 och 1971
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidsskrift. - Stockholm : Historiska föreningen. - 0018-263X. ; 129:3, s. 445-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, two case studies from 1921–22 and 1971 respectively, are juxtaposed in order to determine change in official attitudes and screening contexts for pornographic films. Focusing in the first case on an exhibitor who in 1922 was convicted of screening an obscene film on three occasions the year before, and in the other case on the range of venues for pornographic films in Malmö the month before the removal of the obscenity clause from the penal code in Swedish law, the authors conclude that public but secret screenings of clandestinely circulated films for all-male audiences did take place in 1921. The question can be raised as to whether women also sometimes attended. In 1971, however, one could see semi-pornographic feature films in regular cinemas and hardcore short films at so called sex clubs which also featured strip and live shows. Referring to a survey published in 1969, in which a slight majority of the informants were against pornography, the authors finally argue that perhaps the authorities had undergone the greatest transformation in attitude, whereas the general public only changed their views slightly between 1921 and 1971.
