  • Fostering sustainable technologies : A framework for analysing the governance of innovation systems
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Science and Public Policy. - 0302-3427. ; 38:5, s. 403-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development and diffusion of technological innovations need governing in order to contribute to societal goals related to sustainability. Yet, there are few systematic studies mapping out what types of governance are deployed and how they influence the development and diffusion of sustainable technological innovations. This paper develops a framework for analysing the role of governance in innovation systems aimed towards sustainability. The framework is based on the literatures on governance, technological innovation systems and socio-technical transitions. We foresee empirical studies based on the framework that may serve as a needed input into governance processes. © Beech Tree Publishing 2011.

  • Scenarios in selected tools for environmental systems analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - 0959-6526. ; 16:18, s. 1958-1970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of different tools for analysing environmental impacts of different systems have been developed. These include procedural tools such as strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and environmental management systems (EMS) as well as analytical ones such as life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC), cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and the system of economic and environmental accounts (SEEA) including input-output analysis (IOA). Descriptions or scenarios of the future are typically relevant elements in these tools, since they are often used to describe impacts in the future. For futures studies a number of different approaches and techniques have been developed. In an earlier paper we have presented a typology of different types of scenarios that respond to different types of questions. These include predictive scenarios, explorative scenarios and normative scenarios. The aim of this paper is to explore connections between selected tools for environmental systems analysis and different scenario types. Although there is a clear need for futures studies in several tools for environmental systems analysis, it is interesting to note that the literature on methodologies for and case studies of combinations of futures studies and environmental systems analysis tools is rather limited. This suggests that there is a need for further research in this area including both methodoloy and practical case studies.

  • Weighting and valuation in selected environmental systems analysis tools - suggestions for further developments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - 0959-6526. ; 19:2-3, s. 145-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In environmental systems analysis tools like Life Cycle Assessment, strategic environmental assessment, cost benefit analysis and environmental management systems, results need to be presented in a comprehensible way to make alternatives easily comparable. One way of doing this is to aggregate results to a manageable set by using weighting methods.. In this paper, we explore how weighting methods are used in some selected Environmental Systems Analysis Tools (ESATs), and suggest possible developments of their use. We examine the differences in current use patterns, discuss the reasons for and implications of such differences, and investigate whether observed differences in use are necessary. The result of our survey shows that weighting and valuation is broadly used in the examined ESATs. The use of weighting/valuation methods is different in different tools, but these differences are not always related to the application; rather, they are related to traditions and views on valuation and weighting. Also, although the requirements on the weights/values may differ between tools, there are intersections where they coincide. Monetary weights, using either endpoint or midpoint methods, are found to be useful in all the selected tools. Furthermore, the inventory shows that that there is a common need for generic sets of weights. There is a need for further research focusing on the development of consistent value sets derived with a wide range of methods. In parallel to the development of weighting methods it is important with critical evaluations of the weighting sets with regard to scientific quality, consistency and data gaps.

  • Adsorbents for the post-combustion capture of CO2 using rapid temperature swing or vacuum swing adsorption
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - 0306-2619. ; 104, s. 418-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In general, the post-combustion capture of CO2 is costly; however, swing adsorption processes can reduce these costs under certain conditions. This review highlights the issues related to adsorption-based processes for the capture of CO2 from flue gas. In particular, we consider studies that investigate CO2 adsorbents for vacuum swing or temperature swing adsorption processes. Zeolites, carbon molecular sieves, metal organic frameworks, microporous polymers, and amine-modified sorbents are relevant for such processes. The large-volume gas flows in the gas flue stacks of power plants limit the possibilities of using regular swing adsorption processes, whose cycles are relatively slow. The structuring of CO2 adsorbents is crucial for the rapid swing cycles needed to capture CO2 at large point sources. We review the literature on such structured CO2 adsorbents. Impurities may impact the function of the sorbents, and could affect the overall thermodynamics of power plants, when combined with carbon capture and storage. The heat integration of the adsorption-driven processes with the power plant is crucial in ensuring the economy of the capture of CO2, and impacts the design of both the adsorbents and the processes. The development of adsorbents with high capacity, high selectivity, rapid uptake, easy recycling, and suitable thermal and mechanical properties is a challenging task. These tasks call for interdisciplinary studies addressing this delicate optimization process, including integration with the overall thermodynamics of power plants.

  • 2D to 3D crossover of the magnetic properties in ordered arrays of iron oxide nanocrystals
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - 2040-3364. ; 5:3, s. 953-960
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic 2D to 3D crossover behavior of well-ordered arrays of monodomain gamma-Fe2O3 spherical nanoparticles with different thicknesses has been investigated by magnetometry and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Using the structural information of the arrays obtained from grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy together with the experimentally determined values for the saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy of the nanoparticles, we show that MC simulations can reproduce the thickness-dependent magnetic behavior. The magnetic dipolar particle interactions induce a ferromagnetic coupling that increases in strength with decreasing thickness of the array. The 2D to 3D transition in the magnetic properties is mainly driven by a change in the orientation of the magnetic vortex states with increasing thickness, becoming more isotropic as the thickness of the array increases. Magnetic anisotropy prevents long-range ferromagnetic order from being established at low temperature and the nanoparticle magnetic moments instead freeze along directions defined by the distribution of easy magnetization directions.

  • Coronene fusion by heat treatment : Road to nanographenes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - Washington : American Chemical Society. - 1932-7447. ; 115:27, s. 13207-13214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reactions of coronene dehydrogenation and fusion upon heat treatment in the temperature range of 500700 C were studied using XRD, TEM, Raman, IR, and NEXAFS spectroscopy. The formation of a coronene dimer (dicoronylene) was observed at temperatures 530-550 C; dicoronylene can easily be separated using sublimation with a temperature gradient. An insoluble and not sublimable black precipitate was found to form at higher temperatures. Analysis of the data shows that dimerization of coronene is followed at 550600 C by oligomerization into larger molecules. Above 600 C amorphization of the material and formation of graphitic nanoparticles was observed. Coronene fusion by annealing is proposed as a road to synthesis of larger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nanographenes.

  • Quantitative subproteomic analysis of age-related changes in mouse liver peroxisomes by iTRAQ LC-MS/MS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of chromatography. B. - 1570-0232. ; 879:30, s. 3393-3400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aging is a complex multifactorial phenomenon, which is believed to result from the accumulation of cellular damage to biological macromolecules. Peroxisomes recently emerged as another important source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in addition to mitochondria. However, the role of these organelles in the process of aging is still not clear. The aim of this study was to characterize the changes in protein expression profiles of young (10 weeks old) versus old (18 months old) mouse liver peroxisome-enriched fractions. We have applied shotgun proteomic approach based on liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) combined with iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation) labeling that allows comparative quantitative multiplex analysis. Our analysis led to identification and quantification of 150 proteins, 8 out of which were differentially expressed between two age groups at a statistically significant level (p < 0.05), with folds ranging from 1.2 to 4.1. These proteins involved in peroxisornal beta-oxidation, detoxification of xenobiotics and production of ROS. Noteworthy, differences in liver proteome have been observed between as well as within different age groups. In conclusion, our subproteomic quantitative study suggests that mouse liver proteome is sufficiently maintained until certain age.

  • Isolated cases or widespread practice? : The occurrence of sharing managers in Swedish working life
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Economics and Business Letters. - 2254-4380. ; 1:3, s. 23-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In investigating whether shared leadership can be tracked on a work-life level, this study aims to contribute knowledge about how common shared leadership is among managers in Sweden. A search was made for equal assumption of responsibilities and, specifically, for joint leadership, i.e. a formal mandate for decision-making affecting the full range of responsibilities attaching to the managerial post. The results show that shared leadership is tracked on a work-life level, and that the most far-reaching form joint leadership was found among 5 % of the managers. Thus, the phenomenon cannot be ignored as anecdotal. This adds relevance to influencing perceptions of leadership towards more pluralism, in which questions of leadership naturally incorporate more interactive variations than does the hitherto accepted theory of singular leadership.

  • The Dominant white, Dun and Smoky color variants in chicken are associated with insertion/deletion polymorphisms in the PMEL17 gene.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Genetics. - 0016-6731. ; 168:3, s. 1507-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dominant white, Dun, and Smoky are alleles at the Dominant white locus, which is one of the major loci affecting plumage color in the domestic chicken. Both Dominant white and Dun inhibit the expression of black eumelanin. Smoky arose in a White Leghorn homozygous for Dominant white and partially restores pigmentation. PMEL17 encodes a melanocyte-specific protein and was identified as a positional candidate gene due to its role in the development of eumelanosomes. Linkage analysis of PMEL17 and Dominant while using a red jungle fowl/White Leghorn intercross revealed no recombination between these loci. Sequence analysis showed that the Dominant white allele was exclusively associated with a 9-bp insertion in exon 10, leading to an insertion of three amino acids in the PMEL17 transmembrane region. Similarly, a deletion of five amino acids in the transmembrane region occurs in the protein encoded by Dun. The Smoky allele shared the 9-bp insertion in exon 10 with Dominant white, as expected from its origin, but also had a deletion of 12 nucleotides in exon 6, eliminating four amino acids from the mature protein. These mutations are, together with the recessive silver mutation in the mouse, the only PMEL17 mutations with phenotypic effects that have been described so far in any species.

  • Ancient DNA Reveals Lack of Continuitybetween Neolithic Hunter-Gatherersand Contemporary Scandinavians
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Current Biology. - Elsevier. - 0960-9822. ; 19:20, s. 1758-1762
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The driving force behind the transition from a foraging toa farming lifestyle in prehistoric Europe (Neolithization)has been debated for more than a century [1–3]. Of particularinterest is whether population replacement or culturalexchange was responsible [3–5]. Scandinavia holds a uniqueplace in this debate, for it maintained one of the last majorhunter-gatherer complexes in Neolithic Europe, the PittedWare culture [6]. Intriguingly, these late hunter-gatherersexisted in parallel to early farmers for more than a millenniumbefore they vanished some 4,000 years ago [7, 8]. The prolongedcoexistence of the two cultures in Scandinavia hasbeen cited as an argument against population replacementbetween the Mesolithic and the present [7, 8]. Through analysisof DNA extracted from ancient Scandinavian humanremains, we show that people of the Pitted Ware culturewere not the direct ancestors of modern Scandinavians(including the Saami people of northern Scandinavia) butare more closely related to contemporary populations ofthe eastern Baltic region. Our findings support hypothesesarising from archaeological analyses that proposea Neolithic or post-Neolithic population replacement inScandinavia [7]. Furthermore, our data are consistent withthe view that the eastern Baltic represents a genetic refugiafor some of the European hunter-gatherer populations.
