- In this paper we present a prototype system as a tool for clinical decision support in the domain of cognitive diseases. The number of patients is increasing while the number of patients that the general practitioner (GP) meets in primary care still is too low to make the GP well trained in diagnostics and management of patients in the area of cognitive diseases. In addition, new treatment strategies are established in clinical routine directed towards cognitive deficiencies with behavioural and psychological symptoms in the presence of dementia (BPSD).

- Unification of generalised terms in a many-valued setting involves considerations for equalities in the sense of similarity degrees between operators and thus similarities between terms. Further, allowing for substitutions of variables with powersets of terms requires ‘flattening’ operators for handling composition of variable substitutions. These techniques are available when using powerset functors composed with the term functor so that this composition of functors is extendable to a monad. In this paper we provide a framework for unification of such generalised terms.

- In this paper we revisit the idea of interpreting fuzzy sets as representations of vague values. In this context a fuzzy set is induced by a crisp value and the membership degree of an element is understood as the similarity degree between this element and the crisp value that determines the fuzzy set. Similarity is assumed to be a notion of distance. This means that fuzzy sets are induced by crisp values and an appropriate distance function. This distance function can be described in terms of scaling the ordinary distance between real numbers. With this interpretation in mind, the task of designing a fuzzy system corresponds to determining suitable crisp values and appropriate scaling functions for the distance. When we want to generate a fuzzy model from data, the parameters have to be fitted to the data. This leads to an optimisation problem that is very similar to the optimisation task to be solved in objective function based clustering. We borrow ideas from the alternating optimisation schemes applied in fuzzy clustering in order to develop a new technique to determine our set of parameters from data, supporting the interpretability of the fuzzy system.

- In this paper we propose a system architecture to support data retrieval from patient records, together with data analysis, and report generation. Moving from retrieval all the way to documentation should be done as in a pipeline, and computer support must minimize manual steps in this knowledge refinement scenario. A case study is drawn from urology for surgery on patients with lower urinary tract symptoms.
