  • Managing an altered social context—Patients experiences of staying away from home while undergoing proton beam therapy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nursing Open. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 2054-1058. ; 7:4, s. 1157-1163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To illuminate the experience of an altered social context for patients with primary brain tumours living away from home while undergoing proton beam therapy. Design: A descriptive, qualitative cross-sectional interview study. Methods: Nineteen patients were interviewed between December 2015–August 2016, either during (N = 7) or before and after (N = 12) their proton beam therapy. A hermeneutical analysis was performed. Results: Participants made adjustments to achieve control and well-being during the treatment period. The analysis also revealed two interrelated patterns that helped participants adjust: being part of the family from a distance and seeking affinity. Conclusion: It is important that patients receiving treatment far from home find a way to remain a part of their family and find affinity in the altered social context. Health professionals can prepare patients for the treatment period and can implement interventions to promote well-being for both patients and their relatives. © 2020 The Authors.

  • New printing technology and pricing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:3, s. 253-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case study analyzes five Swedish printing houses' pricing with respect to their investments in new printing technology. The new printing technology made it possible for the printing houses to market new products and services to meet the demand for shorter delivery times and full service solutions. Although this demand was apparent, the printing houses' opportunities to capitalize on their investments depended on the characteristics of the market segment that they served. Findings indicate that the new printing technology made it possible to change prices when the new services reduced delivery time and costs, and when there were substantial differences between the new services and available substitutes. Thus, customers accepted new pricing when the utilization of the new technology resulted in financial gains and time reductions.

  • Exploring a New Application of Construct Specification Equations (CSEs) and Entropy : A Pilot Study with Balance Measurements
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Entropy. - : MDPI. - 1099-4300. ; 25:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both construct specification equations (CSEs) and entropy can be used to provide a specific, causal, and rigorously mathematical conceptualization of item attributes in order to provide fit-for-purpose measurements of person abilities. This has been previously demonstrated for memory measurements. It can also be reasonably expected to be applicable to other kinds of measures of human abilities and task difficulty in health care, but further exploration is needed about how to incorporate qualitative explanatory variables in the CSE formulation. In this paper we report two case studies exploring the possibilities of advancing CSE and entropy to include human functional balance measurements. In case study I, physiotherapists have formulated a CSE for balance task difficulty by principal component regression of empirical balance task difficulty values from Berg’s Balance Scale transformed using the Rasch model. In case study II, four balance tasks of increasing difficulty due to diminishing bases of support and vision were briefly investigated in relation to entropy as a measure of the amount of information and order as well as physical thermodynamics. The pilot study has explored both methodological and conceptual possibilities and concerns to be considered in further work. The results should not be considered as fully comprehensive or absolute, but rather open up for further discussion and investigations to advance measurements of person balance ability in clinical practice, research, and trials. © 2023 by the authors.

  • Effects of ionic substances in bleaching filtrates and of lignosulfonates on the activity of oxalate oxidase from barley
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Life Sciences. - Weinheim : Wiley. - 1618-0240 .- 1618-2863. ; 11:3, s. 245-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of ionic substances in seven industrial filtrates from kraft pulping, mechanical pulping, and sulfite pulping on the activity of oxalate oxidase from barley were investigated by pre-treatment of the filtrates with ion-exchange resins prior to enzymatic degradation of the oxalic acid in the filtrates. The pre-treatment resulted in increased oxalic acid degradation rates in all filtrates, except for one that was obtained from sulfite pulping. The possibility that lignosulfonates, which were present in the filtrate from sulfite pulping, could affect oxalate oxidase was investigated in a separate set of experiments involving four different preparations of lignosulfonates. At a lignosulfonate concentration of 50 mg/mL and a pH of 3.8, only 2-16% of the activity of oxalate oxidase remained. The results show the effects of anionic and cationic substances in bleaching filtrates on oxalate oxidase and indicate that there is an interaction between the enzyme, which has a positive net charge at pH 3.8, and the polymeric anionic lignosulfonates.

  • How to develop fifth-generation district heating and cooling in Sweden? : Application review and best practices proposed by middle agents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2352-4847. ; 9, s. 4971-4983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden has an ambitious plan to fully decarbonise district heating by 2030 and to contribute with negative emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050. The vagaries of the energy market associated with climate, political, and social changes entail cross-sectoral integration that can fulfill these national targets. Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) is a relatively new concept of district energy systems that features a simultaneous supply of heating and cooling using power-to-heat technologies. This paper presents best practices for developing 5GDHC systems in Sweden to reach a consensus view on these systems among all stakeholders. A mixed-method combining best practice and roadmapping workshops has been used to disseminate mixed knowledge and experience from middle agents representing industry professionals and practitioners. Four successful implementations of 5GDHC systems are demonstrated and the important learned lessons are shared. The best practices are outlined for system planning, system modeling and simulation, prevailing business models for energy communities, and system monitoring. A roadmap from the middle agents’ point of view is composed and can be utilised to establish industry standards and common regulatory frameworks. © 2023 The Author(s)

  • Numerical Study and Experimental Verification of Biomass Conversion and Potassium Release in a 140 kW Entrained Flow Gasifier
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - : American Chemical Society. - 0887-0624 .- 1520-5029. ; 37:2, s. 1116-1130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a Eulerian-Lagrangian model is used to study biomass gasification and release of potassium species in a 140 kW atmospheric entrained flow gasifier (EFG). Experimental measurements of water concentration and temperature inside the reactor, together with the gas composition at the gasifier outlet, are used to validate the model. For the first time, a detailed K-release model is used to predict the concentrations of gas-phase K species inside the gasifier, and the results are compared with experimental measurements from an optical port in the EFG. The prediction errors for atomic potassium (K), potassium chloride (KCl), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and total potassium are 1.4%, 9.8%, 5.5%, and 5.7%, respectively, which are within the uncertainty limits of the measurements. The numerical model is used to identify and study the main phenomena that occur in different zones of the gasifier. Five zones are identified in which drying, pyrolysis, combustion, recirculation, and gasification are active. The model was then used to study the transformation and release of different K species from biomass particles. It was found that, for the forest residue fuel that was used in the present study, the organic part of K is released at the shortest residence time, followed by the release of inorganic K at higher residence times. The release of inorganic salts starts by evaporation of KCl and continues by dissociation of K2CO3 and K2SO4, which forms gas-phase KOH. The major fraction of K is released around the combustion zone (around 0.7-1.3 m downstream of the inlet) due to the high H2O concentration and temperature. These conditions lead to rapid dissociation of K2CO3 and K2SO4, which increases the total K concentration from 336 to 510 ppm in the combustion zone. The dissociation of the inorganic salts and KOH formation continues in the gasification zone at a lower rate; hence, the total K concentration slowly increases from 510 ppm at 1.3 m to 561 ppm at the outlet. © 2023 The Authors.
