  • Intravention, durations, effects : notes of expansive sites and relational architectures
  • 2013. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book is a carefully edited collection of work and research produced at the Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention, Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå (Sweden), from July 2011 to July 2013. It includes short texts, architectural manifestos, research papers, interviews, conversations, and a reflective journey through the work produced at the laboratory. It is also a compilation of fragile and hesitant voices and experiments, tests and discussions, in and around what one could provisionally call, in lack of a better name, relational architecture. And as you will see later, I believe that fragility and hesitation are necessary qualities of our work and our relentless moving and wayfaring. It is organized in three parts: in the first one, after the foreword, the laboratory and some of its actions, reflections and proposals are presented and discussed from our point of view, from the inside. In addition to our own texts, this section includes reflections by Peter Kjaer and Roemer van Toorn, as well as an interview with Francesco Apuzzo and Axel Timm from ‘raumlabor berlin’ with whom we have developed a very interesting and fruitful relationship. The second part, ‘sites, agencies, matters of concern’, offers an overview of the work produced at the laboratory through graphic material (pictures and drawings) accompanied by a reflective discussion of the work and its relationships with what we have called, after Latour, our matters of concern. The third part shifts outwards and gathers contributions by some of the external guests whose committed participation we have had the pleasure of enjoying at some point during these years. Although related to our interests and positions, these contributions are those of ‘outsiders’ and therefore capable of enriching and expanding our range of questions and discussions in diverse and unexpected ways. This part includes texts by Susan Kelly, Javier Rodrigo, Antonio Collados, Aida Sánchez de Serdio and Per Nilsson. The book ends with a text on the notions of ‘sharing, displacing and caring’, that initiates an exploration of what I think is a much needed - and anarchic - ethics of encounter and contribution, while sketching some of the questions, fields and lines along which I hope to continue moving forward in discussion, research and action.

  • Rethinking public space : other public spaces: community, hybrid collaborative art practices and urban reactivation
  • 2010
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Rethinking Public Space is a research project by Marta Serra Permanyer and Alberto Altés Arlandis that tries to approach the diverse processes of production and transformation of contemporary public spaces as well the relationships that are often established between art, everyday life and the space of the city. The project, that takes a closer look at a series of interventions in the village of Caldes de Montbui (Barcelona) trying to reflect around the idea of hybrid collaborative art practice, has been possible thanks to a research grant obtained from the Sala’d’Art Jove de la Secretaria de Joventut de la Generalitat de Catalunya. The idea was submitted as a proposal to a call for projects during the year 2008 and was selected in the research category. The project has been carefully and attentively tutored by Montse Romaní, who has been able to provide her experience and help in a very generous way while supervising the project.

  • Kite Aerial Photography - Hué
  • 2014
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The Kite Aerial Photography - Hué project started with the intention from Mattias Ericsson and me Micael Norberg to work artistically on a jointly project with students from di erent art schools and from di erent cultures. We had an idea of building bridges both artistically and culturally. We traveled to Hué in Vietnam in order to explore new ways to collaborate and  nd new artistic meth- ods. We wanted to use kites and send our cameras up in the air to make aerial pictures. We tried to  nd a way to control events and by that also control our artistic outcome and understanding. But in the The Kite Aerial Photography project we had no control. The weather controlled our kites. The place and the language controlled what we knew and understood. What was left was to look into ourself and negate a compromise. The leftovers became documentations of an experience. And now I am looking back at those events, wondering what really happened. I am using words, trying to create an image of my memories and of my experience - hot air, smells and noise. Experi- ences I can’t communicate fully in words. You as a viewer will never feel them and I will only remember them. We will also remember di erently. Every participant have their own image ofwhat happened during those days in Hué. The feeling of being di erent, not understanding and being an outsider made us all meet ourselves in di erent ways. We believed that language would build bridges of understanding, and maybe it did. But here we are now. A long time has passed since we returned from Hué. What we have left are images and memories. I remember smells and emotions and in this state between memory and fact a tension is created. A juxtaposition of con ict- ing feelings. I look at the photographs now with a new understanding. We tried to move out of our comfort-zone looking for the unseen, the enigma, where memory and re ection becomes a liminal state. I now realize that knowledge is not fact or truth, but a state that we can call ”not knowing”. A state which for me is the very basic for understanding, and by that becoming the very essence of art.

  • WIDE LOAD [BRED LAST] : a house moved
  • 2023
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The book is a photographic archive and text of a house move in Northern Sweden. It considers the historic, cultural, technical and material significance of wholesale house moving (husflyttningar) in the region, through a single, historic house move in Umeå, 2021. The main frame of analysis is the spatial politics of un-building. It is an investigation of the vernacular mobility of shifting built and occupied forms in relation to a historic and future context of urban reconfiguration, a proposed architecture of de-growth in Northern Sweden. The visual work explores context through the form of the book itself. It is also a potential model that constructs and translates analysis of the space. It is a collaborative architectural work to document the house move and other spatial productions, models, drawings and collage of the space beneath and between the ground and house, image projections, exhibitions and events, as public exchange.

  • The Animation Manual
  • 2012
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • “The Animation Manual” started off with the idea of trying to tie together our own art practice with a workshop in animation. We travelled to Hué in Vietnam to work together with students and teachers at Hué College of Fine Arts. By placing our self in a different cultural context and collecting material that could become a base of a manual we wanted to explore the process and document the experiences we encountered in this meeting.

  • Civic forges : weaving neighbourhoods
  • 2014
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Our society is faced with a number of major challenges. Critical matters like financial tension, pollution, and safety and health issues prove to be difficult to solve with just one simple answer. In many cases these major challenges cannot be unravelled by traditional means and solutions, but require a radical approach to move towards a more sustainable and balanced society. To reach a new equilibrium we need to confront today’s challenges by exploring new ways of thinking and working. By doing so, it is necessary to develop new frameworks, methods, and tools in order to come up with new systematic designs, which create opportunities to transform our society.

  • Share this book : critical perspectives and dialogues about design and sustainability
  • 2013
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a critical time in design. Concepts and practices of design are changing in response to historical developments in the modes of industrial design production and consumption. Indeed, the imperative of more sustainable development requires profound reconsideration of design today. Theoretical foundations and professional definitions are at stake, with consequences for institutions such as museums and universities as well as for future practitioners. This is ‘critical’ on many levels, from the urgent need to address societal and environmental issues to the reflexivity required to think and do design differently.

  • Forest governance and management across time : developing a new forest social contract
  • 2017
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of the past, and of the future on current-time tradeoffs in the forest arena are particularly relevant given the long-term successions in forest landscapes and the hundred years' rotations in forestry. Historically established path dependencies and conflicts determine our present situation and delimit what is possible to achieve. Similarly, future trends and desires have a large influence on decision making. Nevertheless, decisions about forest governance and management are always made in the present – in the present-time appraisal of the developed situation, future alternatives and in negotiation between different perspectives, interests, and actors. This book explores historic and future outlooks as well as current tradeoffs and methods in forest governance and management. It emphasizes the generality and complexity with empirical data from Sweden and internationally. It first investigates, from a historical perspective, how previous forest policies and discourses have influenced current forest governance and management. Second, it considers methods to explore alternative forest futures and how the results from such investigations may influence the present. Third, it examines current methods of balancing tradeoffs in decision-making among ecosystem services. Based on the findings the authors develop an integrated approach – Reflexive Forestry – to support exchange of knowledge and understandings to enable capacity building and the establishment of common ground. Such societal agreements, or what the authors elaborate as forest social contracts, are sets of relational commitment between involved actors that may generate mutual action and a common directionality to meet contemporary challenges.

  • A permanent mark on a physical body
  • 2014
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Boiling down a conversation that has been ongoing for years to a few pages of text is a complicated thing to do. Boiling down experiences gathered over the span of half a lifetime is even more so. In the beginning of this project, mingling two different people’s notions of existence into one body of text seemed to provide nothing but confusion and frustration. But there turned out to be some points of connection, bright lights that started to indicate a path. It was loosely defined, sometimes lost from sight, but nonetheless a common ground. What started to emerge was a shared notion of being. A being among beings. Being aware of the creeping sensation of becoming aware through a bodily experience. Being there-ness, a sensation brought upon the flesh through needles and patterns. It could have been anything, of course. The prick of the needle is just the beginning, the thin sliver of sunlight indicating that a door has been opened. Walking through that door is a different thing altogether…
