  • Resourceful Language Technology : Festschrift in Honor of Anna Sågvall Hein
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As the first holder of the first chair in computational linguistics in Sweden, Anna Sågvall Hein has played a central role in the development of computational linguistics and language technology both in Sweden and on the international scene. Besides her valuable contributions to research, which include work on machine translation, syntactic parsing, grammar checking, word prediction, and corpus linguistics, she has been instrumental in establishing a national graduate school in language technology as well as an undergraduate program in language technology at Uppsala University. It is with great pleasure that we present her with this Festschrift to honor her lasting contributions to the field and to commemorate her retirement from the chair in computational linguistics at Uppsala University. The contributions to the Festschrift come from Anna’s friends and colleagues around the world and deal with many of the topics that are dear to her heart. A common theme in many of the articles, as well as in Anna’s own scientific work, is the design, development and use of adequate language technology resources, epitomized in the title Resourceful Language Technology.

The essays span a wide array of topics including, to name a few, the developments within obscenity law in the US, sex in the work of European art cinema auteurs such as Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, the reception of an actress making the crossover move from porn to 'regular' film. The issue also includes a standard section of book, festival and DVD reviews not connected to the main theme of the issue.

  • Labour Market Transitions and Time Adjustment over the Life Course
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The standard life course is losing ground. More people - men and women -are active in the labour market than ever before, but work is not their only focus in life. In the rush hour of life, but also at the end of their career people work parttime, combine paid work with care or education or want more leisure. The transitional labour market approach in science and policy making looks at the way people make transitions between different domains of life or combine activities in these different domains. This results in questions like: can men cross the bridge to the field of care as easily as women? Which arrangements help women to return to the labour market after they have devoted some years to fulltime motherhood? Is parttime retirement to be preferred to fulltime retirement? And: who benefits from leave and other life course arrangements? The chapters of this book give the answers to these and several other questions related to labour market transitions between labour and care and transitions between the labour market and retirement. Scientists will be triggered by the theoretical notions and the firm empirical analyses. Policy makers may find inspiration for solutions to everyday policy problems that they will be facing during the next years as individual lifecourses will become more diverse.

  • New frontiers in marine tourism : diving experiences, management and sustainability
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Diving tourism has seen such growth in the past decade that the World Tourism Organization suggests it will soon become as important as ski tourism. According to a WTO estimate, there are now 5-7 million active certified divers in the world. Despite its development as a mass tourism activity, its dynamic growth and great economic importance, particularly for island destinations in the tropics, surprisingly few scientific publications address this form of special-interest tourism. In the light of this, “New Frontiers in Marine Tourism” is the first attempt to describe and analyse this tourism sector comprehensively. The first part of the book is devoted to an overview of the dive sector, addressing different types of diving locations and their particular characteristics, the geographical distribution of dive locations, the origins of dive tourists, as well as the growth and economic significance of diving tourism in destinations worldwide. In its second section, the book outlines different motivations and typologies of diving tourists, their learning behaviour, knowledge of marine environments, and their interaction with flora and fauna. The third section focuses on diver satisfaction, attitudes and preferences, diver education and interpretation, compliance with regulations by divers and tour operators, environmental impacts, and aspects of risk and health, thus highlighting a variety of pressing topics related to the management of diving tourism.
