  • Slightly superior performance of bioimpedance spectroscopy over single frequency regression equations for assessment of total body water.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2015 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE. 25-29 Aug. 2015, Milan, Italy.. - : IEEE. - 1094-687X .- 1558-4615. - 9781424492718 - 9781424492701 ; 2015, s. 3707-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical bioimpedance has been used for several decades to assess body fluid distribution and body composition by using single frequency and bioimpedance spectroscopic (BIS) techniques. It remains uncertain whether BIS methods have better performance compare to single frequency regression equations. In this work the performance of two BIS methods and four different 50 kHz single frequency prediction equations was studied in a data set of wrist-to-ankle tetrapolar BIS measurements (5-1000 kHz) together with reference values of total body water obtained by tritium dilution in 92 patients. Data were compared using regression techniques and Bland-Altman plots. The results of this study showed that all methods produced similarly high correlation and concordance coefficients, indicating good accuracy as a method. Limits of agreement analysis indicated that the population level performance of Sun's prediction equations was very similar to the performance of both BIS methods. However, BIS methods in practice have slightly better predictive performance than the single-frequency equations as judged by higher correlation and the limits of agreement from the Bland-Altman analysis. In any case, the authors believe that an accurate evaluation of performance of the methods cannot be done as long as the evaluation is done using Bland-Altman analysis, the commonly accepted technique for this kind of performance comparisons.

  • Detection of bursts in the EEG of post asphyctic newborns
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 2006 28th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. - 1557-170X. - 9781424400324 ; , s. 2179-2182, s. 5-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eight features inherent in the electroencephalogram (EEG) have been extracted and evaluated with respect to their ability to distinguish bursts from suppression in burst-suppression EEG. The study is based on EEG from six full term infants who had suffered from lack of oxygen during birth. The features were used as input in a neural network, which was trained on reference data segmented by an experienced electroencephalographer. The performance was then evaluated on validation data for each feature separately and in combinations. The results show that there are significant variations in the type of activity found in burst-suppression EEG from different subjects, and that while one or a few features seem to be sufficient for most patients in this group, some cases require specific combinations of features for good detection to be possible.

  • Analysis of SCADA data for early fault detection with application to the maintenance management of wind turbines
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: CIGRE Session 46. - : CIGRE. ; 2016-August
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past decade wind turbines have proven to be a promising source of renewable power. Wind turbines are generally placed in remote locations and are subject to harsh environmental conditions throughout their lifetimes. Consequently, the failures in wind turbines are expensive to repair and cause loss of revenue due to long down times. Asset management in wind turbines can aid in assessing and improving the reliability and availability of wind turbines, thereby making them more competitive. Maintenance policies play an important role in asset management and different maintenance models have been developed for wind turbine applications. Typically, mathematical models for maintenance optimization provide either an age based or a condition based preventive maintenance schedule. Age based preventive maintenance schedules provide the owner with the possibility to financially plan for maintenance activities for the entire lifetime of the wind turbine by providing the expected number of replacements for each component. However, age based preventive maintenance schedule may not consume the operating life of the wind turbine components to the maximum. Condition based maintenance scheduling has the advantage of better utilizing the operating life of the components. This paper proposes a wind turbine maintenance management framework which utilizes operation and maintenance data from different sources to combine the benefits of age based and condition based maintenance scheduling. This paper also presents an artificial neural network (ANN) based condition monitoring method which utilizes data from supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to detect failures in wind turbine components and systems. The procedures to construct ANN models for condition monitoring application are outlined. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ANN based condition monitoring method it is applied to case studies from real wind turbines. Furthermore, a mathematical model called preventive maintenance schedule with interval costs (PMSPIC) is discussed and its application to a case study within the maintenance management framework is presented. The case study demonstrates the advantage of combining both the age based and condition based maintenance scheduling methods.

  • Leadership and Pedagogical Skills in Computer Science Engineering by Combining a Degree in Engineering with a Degree in Education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE). - : IEEE. - 0190-5848. - 9781728189611 ; , s. 1-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this full paper on innovative practice, we describe and discuss findings from dual degree study programmes that combine a master's degree in engineering with a master's degree in education. This innovative study programme design has emerged in Sweden due to an alarming demand for more Upper Secondary School teachers in STEM subjects. Studies on alumni from these programmes indicate that the graduates are highly appreciated not only as teachers in schools, but also in business and industry, e.g. in roles as IT consultants and computer science engineers. Data indicate that the breadth of the combined education, and especially leadership and pedagogical skills, are important factors for these graduates' success as engineers.

  • Design and evaluation of a microfluidic system for inhibition studies of yeast cell signaling
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9780819491756 ; , s. 84582K-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In cell signaling, different perturbations lead to different responses and using traditional biological techniques that result in averaged data may obscure important cell-to-cell variations. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a four-inlet microfluidic system that enables single-cell analysis by investigating the effect on Hog1 localization post a selective Hog1 inhibitor treatment during osmotic stress. Optical tweezers was used to position yeast cells in an array of desired size and density inside the microfluidic system. By changing the flow rates through the inlet channels, controlled and rapid introduction of two different perturbations over the cell array was enabled. The placement of the cells was determined by diffusion rates flow simulations. The system was evaluated by monitoring the subcellular localization of a fluorescently tagged kinase of the yeast "High Osmolarity Glycerol" (HOG) pathway, Hog1-GFP. By sequential treatment of the yeast cells with a selective Hog1 kinase inhibitor and sorbitol, the subcellular localization of Hog1-GFP was analysed on a single-cell level. The results showed impaired Hog1-GFP nuclear localization, providing evidence of a congenial design. The setup made it possible to remove and add an agent within 2 seconds, which is valuable for investigating the dynamic signal transduction pathways and cannot be done using traditional methods. We are confident that the features of the four-inlet microfluidic system will be a valuable tool and hence contribute significantly to unravel the mechanisms of the HOG pathway and similar dynamic signal transduction pathways.

  • Comparing a Supervised and an Unsupervised Classification Method for Burst Detection in Neonatal EEG
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS 2008. 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE, 20-24 August, 2008. - : IEEE. - 1557-170X. - 9781424418145 ; , s. 3836-3839
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) using unsupervised and supervised training, respectively, were compared with respect to their ability to correctly classify burst and suppression in neonatal EEG. Each classifier was fed five feature signals extracted from EEG signals from six full term infants who had suffered from perinatal asphyxia. Visual inspection of the EEG by an experienced electroencephalographer was used as the gold standard when training the SVM, and for evaluating the performance of both methods. The results are presented as receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and quantified by the area under the curve (AUC). Our study show that the SVM and the HMM exhibit similar performance, despite their fundamental differences.

  • Engineering the software of robotic systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2017 IEEE/ACM 39th International Conference on Software Engineering Companion, ICSE-C 2017. - : IEEE. ; , s. 507-508
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of software for robotic systems is often case-specific, without fully following established engineering approaches. Systematic approaches, methods, models, and tools are pivotal for the creation of robotic systems for real-world applications and turn-key solutions. Well-defined (software) engineering approaches are considered the 'make or break' factor in the development of complex robotic systems. The shift towards well-defined engineering approaches will stimulate component supply-chains and significantly reshape the robotics marketplace. The goal of this technical briefing is to provide an overview on the state of the art and practice concerning solutions and open challenges in the engineering of software required to develop and manage robotic systems. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is discussed as a promising technology to raise the level of abstraction, promote reuse, facilitate integration, boost automation and promote early analysis in such a complex domain.

  • Awareness, transience and temporality : Design opportunities from Rah Island
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Human-Computer Interaction – INTERACT 2013. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783642404795 ; , s. 696-713
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the implications of the socialness of private communication. Drawing upon ethnographic observations of first time mobile phone users in Rah, an island in Vanuatu, we revisit the debate on how the mobile phone reconfigures private and personal communication. Our observations show how the advent of the mobile phone disrupts and challenges existing practices around how private communication is managed on the island. These observations are used to open up a design space where we explore the socialness of personal, private communication. Drawing on the analysis, we discuss three directions for future thinking of mobile interaction design: (1) designing for spatial awareness; (2) designing for transience and (3) designing with temporality. We expand on these to discuss the notion of digital patina, which we argue, is an exciting topic to explore for the design of personal, social communication.
