  • PREP- Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SEFI 2023 - 51st Annual Conference of the European Society for Engineering Education : Engineering Education for Sustainability, Proceedings - Engineering Education for Sustainability, Proceedings. - : SEFI. - 9782873520267 ; , s. 163-172
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a concept called PREP - Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice, with the goal of engaging engineering educators in studying, documenting and sharing their initiatives to improve teaching practices. This concept is compared to other methodologies where the researcher and educational practitioner sometimes coincide. The study is based on a pilot, with six participants following the PREP program for three months, which we study autoethnographically. We also carried out a focus group discussion (n=12) to investigate to what extent university teachers regard the ideas from the PREP program as helpful for studying educational activities and sharing what they do and find.

  • The Faroese model of (sustainable) destination marketing: Volunteering glorification, staying with locals, and experiencing gratitude
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Geographers’ Meeting 2022 (Multiple Nordic Geographies), 19–22 June 2022, Joensuu, Finland.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The case that constitutes the subject for this paper is a voluntourism project organized in the Faroe Islands that has gained worldwide attention. Unskilled volunteers were called to perform maintenance works while popular hiking trails remained closed for regular tourists. Thousands applied to build and mark trails in exchange for bed and board, while the idea was a successful marketing campaign for the Faroe Islands. Our study is anchored in theories on tourism destination image management and consumer behavior. Literature suggests that there is a growing number of tourists who make their travel choices based on the assessed sustainability of a place. This has informed the development of the broader concept of the destination image: an interpretation of reality within the tourist’s mind, based both on rationality and emotionality. It is evidenced that there is a connection between destination image and travelers’ purchases. Therefore, planning and implementing certain activities might lead to the creation of a destination image perceived as sustainable by potential visitors and improvement of a tourist destination’s competitiveness. This is an important part of development plans to align with tourist demands. We show how the voluntourism project is used within marketing and sustainability promotion. Our case adds value to studies on local authorities’ influence over the sustainable destination image and its competitiveness. In a broader perspective, it provides insights into research on the successful maintenance of supply and demand within tourism. Our findings help update the discussion on what this Faroese model might offer the civil society and tourism industry. Based on data gathered from quantitative (survey) and qualitative (participatory observation and interviews) methods, we discuss the Faroese model of destination image creation (DIC) and sustainability promotion (SP). We argue that engaging tourists in physical work, showing them gratitude, and inviting local people to participate: a) emphasizes Faroese values: respecting nature, a small community (DIC); b) instills a perception of the Faroe Islands as environmentally friendly (DIC); c) fosters more engaged tourists and reflective tourist behaviors (SP). We find that the Faroese model can be adopted by destinations threatened by overtourism that seek ready sustainable tourism solutions.

  • Perceived meaning in virtual reality architectural models
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Conference on Applied Virtual Reality in Engineering & Construction Applications of Virtual Reality: Current Initiatives and Future Challenges. ; , s. 117-127, s. 117-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This explorative study investigated how the participants experienced a VR-presentation of an office building. Three office types (landscape, mixed and traditional) were presented in a between-subjects experimental design to employees at the Ericsson company in Sweden. The effects on the participants’ experience were measured using the Semantic Environ¬mental Scale (the SMB-scale, Küller 1975; 1991), a standardised instrument consisting of eight meaning dimensions, each measured using four to eight adjectives on seven-step scales. The SMB-results showed that the participants’ experience of the three office types differed with regard to the dimensions, pleasantness, enclosedness and social status. We also found effects of gender on the meaning dimensions affection, potency and unity. Our research, conducted in an ecologically valid context, suggests that the VR-model tested produces realistic effects on the participants’ experience.

  • Users’ experience of a virtual reality architectural model compared with users’ experience of the completed building
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st international conference on advanced research in virtual and rapid prototyping. ; , s. 363-370, s. 363-370
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigated how the employees of a company experienced a VR-model of an office building that was to be their future work place and how that VR-experience com¬pared with the employees’ experience of the completed building. About two years after the VR-showings the building was completed and the staff had moved into the building. The results for the employees who saw the VR-presentation for the Semantic environment de¬scrip¬tion scale (SMB) comparing the experiences of the VR-model with the experiences of the completed real building suggested that the experience of the VR-model gave a fairly accurate representation of the experience of the real building However, the reactions to the VR-model were more appreciative after the VR-show as compared with when the VR-model was compared with the real building.

  • Vicarious Value Learning and Inference in Human-Human and Human-Robot Interaction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 8th International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction Workshops and Demos, ACIIW 2019. - 9781728138923 - 9781728138916
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 IEEE. Among the biggest challenges for researchers of human-robot interaction is imbuing robots with lifelong learning capacities that allow efficient interactions between humans and robots. In order to address this challenge we are developing computational mechanisms for a humanoid robotic agent utilizing both system 1 and system 2-like cognitive processing capabilities. At the core of this processing is a Social Affective Appraisal model that allows for vicarious value learning and inference. Using a multi-dimensional reinforcement learning approach the robotic agent learns affective value-based functions (system 1). This learning can ground representations of affective relations (predicates) relevant to interacting agents. In this article we discuss the existing theoretical basis for developing our neural network model as a system 1-like process. We also discuss initial ideas for developing system 2-like top-down/generative affective (semantic relation-based) processing. The aim of the symbolic-connectionist architectural development is to promote autonomous capabilities in humanoid robots for interacting efficiently/intelligently (recombinant application of learned associations) with humans in changing and challenging environments.

  • Earwitnesses: The effect of voice differences in identification accuracy and the realism in confidence judgments
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings FONETIK 2009: The XXIIth Swedish Phonetics Conference. ; , s. 180-185, s. 180-185
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Individual characteristic features in voice and speech are important in ear witness identification. A target-absent lineup with six foils was used to analyze the influence of voice and speech features on recognition. The participants’ response for two voice foils were particularly successful in the sense that they were most often rejected. These voice foils were characterized by the features’ articulation rate and pitch in relation to the target voice. For the same two foils the participants as a collective also showed marked underconfidence and especially good ability to separate correct and incorrect identifications by means of their confidence judgments for their answers to the identification question. For the other four foils the participants showed very poor ability to separate correct from incorrect identification answers by means of their confidence judgments.
