  • Crafting Knowledge?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Linköping Electronic Conference Proceedings. - Linköping University Electronic Press. - 1650-3686 .- 1650-3740. - 978-91-7519-993-1 - 978-91-7393-122-9 ; :062, s. 65-71
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ”Crafting knowledge” was a session organised by Anneli Palmsköld and Johanna Rosenqvist, that took place in Norrköping, Sweden, 16 June 2011 as part of the International ACSIS Conference Current Issues in European Cultural Studies. Together the scholars participating in the Crafting knowledge-session were covering a range of subfields of craft studies today. The session focused on the explorative question of what an academic approach that put craft theory into practice and made craft practice into theory would consist of. This is also the main question asked in the paper “Crafting Knowledge?” that recapitulates and contextualises the outcome of the session. The paper draws up tentative categories for how research in, on and through craft can be done. By framing the knowledge emerging from craft and crafting some theories and methods of crafting are discussed. The crafted artefact and the act of making can be considered from many different aspects, for example from an artistic, historical or aesthetical point of view. Conventions of craft, rules about its making, knowledge about and knowledge through craft and crafting are some of the themes presented in a broad scope of cultural studies.

  • Contagious contacts: How police trainees influence each other's memories for a criminal event
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Oral paper presented at the 14’th European Conference on Psychology and Law (Cracow, Poland).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the effect of confirmatory and disconfirmatory feedback on the accuracy (realism) in witnesses’ confidence judgements of their event memory. After watching a short video of a kidnapping the participants answered 44 two-alternative questions on the videotape. Two weeks later the participants were handed their old question-answering sheet with the original questions and their own answers. In addition feedback was provided in writing for each answer. The participants were asked to give confidence ratings with respect to the correctness of each answer. In the Control condition the participants received no feedback. Overall, the witnesses’ confidence ratings showed overconfidence in all conditions. Furthermore, confirmatory feedback caused higher overconfidence, compared both with disconfirmatory feedback and no feedback. The results show that the realism in the eyewitnesses’ confidence judgements of their event memory is indeed sensitive to co-witness feedback, especially to confirming feedback.

  • The realism of confidence judgments of statements in the Cognitive and Standard Interviews
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 13th Conference of the European Association of Psychology and Law, Edinburgh, UK, 7-12 July.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cognitive Interview (CI) is a well-researched interview method and the research results show that CI, compared with more conventional interview styles, enhances witnesses’ memory. However, not much research has been done on the question of how CI affects the realism of eyewitnesses’ judgments of confidence in the veracity of their interview statements. In a previous study (Granhag, Jonsson & Allwood, Psychology, Crime & Law, in press) we investigated the realism of witnesses’ confidence judgments of their own answers to two-alternative questions. These questions were produced by the researchers to test the witnesses’ retention of a filmed kidnapping. Our results showed that, in this context, the CI does not appear to affect the realism in witnesses’ confidence, and not to inflate confidence in erroneous recall, compared to a Standard Interview (SI). In the present study our ambition was to conduct an ecologically more valid study of the realism of witnesses’ confidence judgments. Again, the CI was compared with a SI. The witnesses (n= 58) returned about two weeks after having been interviewed about their memories of the filmed kidnapping and were, at return, presented with transcribed versions of parts of their interview statements. These were confidence judged by the witnesses. The witnesses also gave an overall judgment of how many of all answered questions they had answered correctly (i.e., a frequency judgment). In our presentation, results will be presented regarding the realism of the witnesses’ confidence and frequency judgments in this, compared to our previous research, more ecologically valid study.

  • Exposure-response relationships for annoyance by wind turbine noise: a comparison with other stationary sources
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of EURONOISE, Edinburgh, 26 – 28 October 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are indications that, given a certain level of noise exposure, the expected annoyance by wind turbine noise is higher than that by noise from other sources such as industrial noise or transportation noise. The aim of the present study was to establish the exposure-response relationship between wind turbine noise exposure and the expected percentage annoyed residents on the basis of available data. Data from two surveys in Sweden (N=341, N=754) and one survey in the Netherlands (N=725) were combined to achieve relationships between Lden and annoyance indoors as well as annoyance outdoors at the dwelling. In addition, the influence of several individual and situational factors was assessed. In particular, annoyance was lower in residents who received economical benefit from wind turbines, and higher in residents for whom the wind turbine was visible from the dwelling. Age and noise sensitivity had similar effects on annoyance to those found in research on annoyance by other sources. The exposure-response relationship for wind turbine noise is compared to previously established relationships for industrial noise and transportation noise

  • Nitrous oxide emission allowed from biofuel crops in Swedish systems
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nitrogen & Global Change 2011, Key Findings - Future Challenges.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been much discussion about whether or not biofuels are a substantial saver of greenhouse gases (GHG).The EU have introduced a policy that biofuel production in the EU must emit at least 35% less GHG compared with fossil fuels, estimated at a regional level. In view of the desire of policymakers to have a simple way of assessing whether biofuel-associated GHG emissions are on the safe side of this “sustainability level”, we have applied a simple LCA to ethanol production from wheat grain grown in Sweden. It shows that the system is very sensitive to the magnitude of N2O emissions due to the cropping and can achieve the necessary emissions savings only if direct N2O emissions are below 2 kg N2O-N ha-1 yr-1. We have also investigated the different outcomes of the LCA, when Swedish field data on N2O emissions are compared with emissions predicted by several well-known modelling procedures (all of which showed higher emissions than the Swedish measured values). We discuss the difficulty of assessing N2O emissions in relation to biofuel production and the implications.

  • Nitrous oxide emissions from European agriculture; an analysis of variability and drivers of emissions from field experiments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nitrogen & Global Change 2011, Key Findings - Future Challenges.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agricultural soils are a major source of nitrous oxide in Europe, and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector frequently highlight the importance of management interventions. However, the importance of such management can be difficult to assess against a background of fluxes that are highly variable in time and space. A network of 13 experimental sites (seven arable and six grassland) was established as a part of the NitroEurope project, in which common protocols were developed for the measurement and reporting of nitrous oxide emissions and related environmental drivers. At each site a range of management interventions were compared. Annual total emissions of nitrous oxide from different treatment sites and years showed wide variability. Single variables were often poor predictors of emissions, and so a range of multivariate statistical techniques were used to explore the relationships between annual emissions and underlying driving variables. The implications for developing European strategies for the mitigation of nitrous oxide emissions from the agricultural sector are discussed.
