The invisible pandemic : Community response to pandemic influenza in rural northern Sweden 1918-20

- Throughout human history, recurrent influenza pandemics have affected individuals and societies all over the world. Yet the social responses have varied with time and space. This article discusses society's response to the Spanish influenza of 1918-1920 in northern rural Sweden, focusing on measures taken by local communities to meet the advancing pandemic. In the five studied rural communities, the official response was sparse and reactive, and the presence of pandemic influenza is almost invisible in the municipal records. Potentially preventive measures, such as school closures and bans on public gatherings, were used inadequately and introduced far too late to be effective. The current struggle with wartime hardship, food crisis and a strained economy, an insufficient public health administration, a national preventive policy primarily aimed at the prevention of cholera, and the continued use of traditional methods to deal with crises in society are suggested as some explanations for local authorities' apparent inertia during the Spanish influenza.

- A emergência de um novo modo de pensar a materialidade – que reclama para si aspetos subjetivos e imateriais – permite problematizar o quotidiano escolar a partir de perspetivas diferentes daquelas que tradicionalmente têm sido adotadas pelos historiadores. Isto é, permite desafiar os binómios no interior dos quais estes constroem os seus objetos, os analisam, problematizam e compreendem. A presente comunicação explora esta possibilidade a partir da análise de um artigo publicado em 1937 por um grupo de alunos no seu jornal escolar. O objetivo é perceber o modo como nele se articulam diversos aspetos da materialidade e como o historiador os pode considerar no estudo das narrativas dos estudantes em geral e das excursões escolares em particular. A ideia é abraçar a hibridez da publicação numa análise capaz de tomar a narrativa como um todo plural. No interior deste exercício torna-se possível pensar o ofício do historiador na medida em que este é convidado não apenas focar-se naquilo que lhe é dado a ver e a perceber, mas também admitir a possibilidade de que o que o impacta enquanto leitor faz igualmente parte da compreensão do seu material empírico.

- This article problematizes the notion of amateur ethnographers (and ethnography) accordant with the new interest in exploring the margins of institutions of knowledge and the networks between established professionals and other actors linked to Anthropology, especially in Argentina. We compare the trajectories of the Swede Mauricio Jesperson and the German Luis Ruez between 1920 and 1960 and their respective productions on the Pilagá of the Chaco, and about the Rankülche in La Pampa and the Mbyá-guaraní in Misiones. We focus on the multiple meshworks of contact which entwine their practices, works, and subjectivities. Likewise, we analyze the interethnic situation, the circulation and formats of their works, its content and textual style and, last but not least, their relations with institutions, especially with the anthropological academia of the time. We seek to highlight in a historical key how the figure of amateur ethnographers varies, needs to be contextually understood, and brings about new practices and products.
