  • Vulnerability and sexual and reproductive health among Zambian secondary school students
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Culture, Health and Sexuality. - : Routledge. - 1369-1058 .- 1464-5351. ; 9:5, s. 533-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study aimed to explore secondary school students' needs in relation to sexual and reproductive health in order to inform efforts to improve the quality of health services available to young people. The study involved data collection from 716 11-22-year-old students in four secondary schools in an urban area in Zambia. Students completed a questionnaire and were invited to write down any inquiries they had regarding sexuality and reproduction. Findings revealed that boys and girls lack adequate information about human reproduction and STIs, including HIV. To avoid misconceptions and myths, they also need clear information on contraceptives and masturbation. Responses indicate that young people would welcome guidance and support related to contraception, pregnancy, abortion and STIs/HIV, but also on love and relationships. Culture, religion and gender are important factors influencing sexuality and sexual abuse. These issues need to be taken into consideration when developing youth-friendly programmes for young people

  • Newborn skin temperature two days postpartum during breastfeeding related to different labour ward practices
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Early Human Development. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-3782 .- 1872-6232. ; 83:1, s. 55-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To investigate (1) the skin temperature pattern in newborns two days after birth in connection to breastfeeding and to examine (2) if the administration of epidural analgesia (EDA) and oxytocin (OT) infusion during labour influences this parameter at this point of time. Method: Forty-seven mother-infant pairs were included in the study: nine mothers had received OT stimulation during labour (OT group), 20 mothers had received an EDA and OT during labour (EDA group), while 18 mothers had received neither EDA nor OT stimulation during labour (control group). A skin temperature electrode was attached between the newborn's shoulder blades. The newborn was placed skin-to-skin on the mother's chest and covered with a blanket. The temperature was recorded immediately after the newborn was put on the mother's chest and at 5, 10, 20 and 30 min. Results: The temperature measured when the newborns were put skin-to-skin on their mothers' chest was significantly higher in the infants of the EDA group (35.07 °C) when compared to the control group (34.19 °C, p = 0.025). Skin temperature increased significantly (p = 0.001) during the entire experimental period in the infants belonging to the control group. The same response was observed in infants whose mothers received OT intravenously during labour (p = 0.008). No such rise was observed in infants whose mothers were given an EDA during labour. Conclusion: The results show that the skin temperature in newborns rises when newborns are put skin-to-skin to breastfeed two days postpartum. This effect on temperature may be hampered by medical interventions during labour such as EDA. © 2006 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • A comparison of experiences of training emergency care in military exercises and competences among conscript nurses with different levels of education
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Military Medicine. - : Association of Military Surgeons. - 0026-4075 .- 1930-613X. ; 172:10, s. 1046-1052
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The military emergency care education of nurses is primarily concerned with the treatment of soldiers with combat-related injuries. Even though great progress has been made in military medicine, there is still the pedagogical question of what emergency care education for military nurses should contain and how it should be taught. The aim of this study was to describe and compare experiences of training emergency care in military exercises among conscript nurses with different levels of education. A descriptive study was performed to describe and compare experiences of training emergency care in military exercises among conscript nurses with different levels of education in nursing. There were statistical differences between nurses with general nursing education and nurses with a general nursing education and supplementary education. A reasonable implication of the differences is that the curriculum must be designed differently depending on the educational background of the students. Hence, there is an interaction between background characteristics, e.g., the level of previous education and differences pertaining to clinical experience of the participants, and the impact of the exercise itself.

  • A holistic approach to acquisition of strategic resources
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Industrial Training. - : Emerald. - 0309-0590 .- 1758-7425. ; 31:8, s. 660-677
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this article is to provide a holistic framework for the acquisition of strategic resources.Design/methodology/approach: The literature dealing with resource creation is reviewed and analyzed from a resource-based point of view. The major methods of acquiring resources are identified through the literature review and the applicability of the framework proposed is illustrated with an empirical example.Findings: Three ways of acquiring strategic resources are identified-- direct investments, organizational processes, and product market positioning. All three ways of acquisition can be intentional or unintentional. Arguments for using this six-dimension scale are provided through deductive reasoning, literature review, and the empirical example.Research implications/limitations: The study identifies the six dimensions of strategic resource acquisition. However, integration of these dimensions is not a subject addressed in this study. Cluster analysis of companies according to these dimensions could enhance our understanding of the characteristics of companies regarding resource acquisition.Originality/value: Whereas previous studies have generally used a single-theory approach, this study highlights the importance of having a holistic outlook when analyzing resource-based competitive advantages.

  • How and what to imitate? : A sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Strategic Change. - : Wiley. - 1086-1718 .- 1099-1697. ; 16:6, s. 271-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in competitiveness generally focuses on how competitive advantages can be developed. This is an important area of research, but as a consequence the process of imitation of competitive advantages has become a neglected area of research.A conceptual sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages is presented. The model mainly draws on resource-based theory, provides a holistic view of the imitation process, identifies different hindrances to imitation of competitive advantages, and presents arguments for the scheme chosen.

  • The criteria nurses use in assessing acute trauma in military emergency care
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Accident and Emergency Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0965-2302 .- 1532-9267. ; 15:3, s. 148-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emergency medical care for seriously injured patients in war or warlike situations is highly important when it comes to soldiers' survival and morale. The Swedish Armed Forces sends nurses, who have limited experience of caring for injured personnel in the field, on a variety of international missions. The aim of this investigation was to identify the kind of criteria nurses rely on when assessing acute trauma and what factors are affecting the emergency care of injured soldiers. A phenomenographic research approach based on interviews was used. The database for the study consists of twelve nurses who served in Bosnia in 1994-1996. The criteria nurses rely on, when assessing acute trauma in emergency care, could be described in terms of domain-specific criteria such as a physiological, an anatomical, a causal and a holistic approach as well as contextual criteria such as being able to communicate, having a sense of belonging, the military environment, the conscript medical orderly and familiarity with health-caring activity. The present study shows that the specific contextual factors affecting emergency care in the field must also be practised before the nurse faces military emergency care situations. This calls for realistic exercises and training programs, where experience from civilian emergency care is interwoven with the knowledge specific to military medical care. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. • Estimating class probabilities in random forests
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 6th International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications, ICMLA 2007. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769530697 ; , s. 211-216
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For both single probability estimation trees (PETs) and ensembles of such trees, commonly employed class probability estimates correct the observed relative class frequencies in each leaf to avoid anomalies caused by small sample sizes. The effect of such corrections in random forests of PETs is investigated, and the use of the relative class frequency is compared to using two corrected estimates, the Laplace estimate and the m-estimate. An experiment with 34 datasets from the UCI repository shows that estimating class probabilities using relative class frequency clearly outperforms both using the Laplace estimate and the m-estimate with respect to accuracy, area under the ROC curve (AUC) and Brier score. Hence, in contrast to what is commonly employed for PETs and ensembles of PETs, these results strongly suggest that a non-corrected probability estimate should be used in random forests of PETs. The experiment further shows that learning random forests of PETs using relative class frequency significantly outperforms learning random forests of classification trees (i.e., trees for which only an unweighted vote on the most probable class is counted) with respect to both accuracy and AUC, but that the latter is clearly ahead of the former with respect to Brier score.

  • Feature vs. classifier fusion for predictive data mining - A case study in pesticide classification
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: FUSION 2007 - 2007 10th International Conference on Information Fusion. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9780662458043 ; , s. 1-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two strategies for fusing information from multiple sources when generating predictive models in the domain of pesticide classification are investigated: i) fusing different sets of features (molecular descriptors) before building a model and ii) fusing the classifiers built from the individual descriptor sets. An empirical investigation demonstrates that the choice of strategy can have a significant impact on the predictive performance. Furthermore, the experiment shows that the best strategy is dependent on the type of predictive model considered. When generating a decision tree for pesticide classification, a statistically significant difference in accuracy is observed in favor of combining predictions from the individual models compared to generating a single model from the fused set of molecular descriptors. On the other hand, when the model consists of an ensemble of decision trees, a statistically significant difference in accuracy is observed in favor of building the model from the fused set of descriptors compared to fusing ensemble models built from the individual sources.

  • Classification of Microarrays with kNN : Comparison of Dimensionality Reduction Methods
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning - IDEAL 2007. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Verlag. - 9783540772255 - 9783540772262 ; , s. 800-809
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dimensionality reduction can often improve the performance of the k-nearest neighbor classifier (kNN) for high-dimensional data sets, such as microarrays. The effect of the choice of dimensionality reduction method on the predictive performance of kNN for classifying microarray data is an open issue, and four common dimensionality reduction methods, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Random Projection (RP), Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Information Gain(IG), are compared on eight microarray data sets. It is observed that all dimensionality reduction methods result in more accurate classifiers than what is obtained from using the raw attributes. Furthermore, it is observed that both PCA and PLS reach their best accuracies with fewer components than the other two methods, and that RP needs far more components than the others to outperform kNN on the non-reduced dataset. None of the dimensionality reduction methods can be concluded to generally outperform the others, although PLS is shown to be superior on all four binary classification tasks, but the main conclusion from the study is that the choice of dimensionality reduction method can be of major importance when classifying microarrays using kNN.
