  • Neuromuscular and circulatory adaptation during combined arm and leg exercise with different maximal work loads
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Applied Physiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1439-6319 .- 1439-6327. ; 101:5, s. 603-611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardiopulmonary kinetics and electromyographic activity (EMG) during exhausting exercise were measured in 8 males performing three maximal combined arm + leg exercises (cA+L). These exercises were performed at different rates of work (mean ± SD; 373 ± 48, 429 ± 55 and 521 ± 102 W) leading to different average exercise work times in all tests and subjects. reached a plateau versus work rate in every maximal cA+L exercise (range 6 min 33 s to 3 min 13 s). The three different exercise protocols gave a maximal oxygen consumption of 4.67 ± 0.57, 4.58 ± 0.52 and 4.66 ± 0.53 l min−1 (P = 0.081), and a maximal heart rate (HRmax) of 190 ± 6, 189 ± 4 and 189 ± 6 beats min−1 (P = 0.673), respectively. Root mean square EMG (EMGRMS) of the vastus lateralis and the triceps brachii muscles increased with increasing rate of work and time in all three cA+L protocols. The study demonstrates that despite different maximal rates of work, leading to different times to exhaustion, the circulatory adaptation to maximal exercise was almost identical in all three protocols that led to a plateau. The EMGRMS data showed increased muscle recruitment with increasing work rate, even though the HRmax and was the same in all three cA+L protocols. In conclusion, these findings do not support the theory of the existence of a central governor (CG) that regulates circulation and neuronal output of skeletal muscles during maximal exercise. Thibault Brink-Elfegoun and Hans-Christer Holmberg contributed equally to this article.

  • Factors related to tobacco use among teenagers.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Respiratory medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 101:3, s. 496-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To examine tobacco use among teenagers, identify factors related to tobacco use, as well as evaluate the outcome of a smoking prevention program. METHODS: From age 7/8 to 14/15, annual questionnaires about asthma and allergy have been completed in the OLIN paediatric study in Northern Sweden. From 12/13 years, questions about tobacco use, i.e. smoking and snuff, were added. A smoking prevention program was performed during 2 years. RESULTS: Any tobacco use increased from 5.0% at age 12/13 years, to 14.4% at age 14/15. At age 14/15 years, the prevalence of tobacco use was significantly higher among boys than girls (16.7 and 12.0%, respectively). More girls than boys smoked (8.9 and 2.8%, respectively), while use of snuff was more common among the boys (15.6 and 4.2%, respectively). Significant risk factors for smoking were any of the family members currently smoking, OR 6.1 (95% CI 4.0-9.3) and a physician-diagnosed asthma at the age of 14/15 years, OR 1.9 (95% CI 1.2-3.0). A protective factor against tobacco use was participation in sports, OR 0.3 (95% CI 0.2-0.4). The prevention program did not result in less tobacco use, although it may have delayed smoking initiation. CONCLUSION: The patterns of tobacco use differed significantly between boys and girls. Though any tobacco use was more common among boys, girls were more likely to smoke, and boys were more likely to use snuff. Having asthma did not prevent the teenagers from smoking. Since having a smoking family member was the major risk factor for tobacco use, prevention programs should be directed at smoking families in addition to the individuals.

  • To regain participation in occupations through human encounters : narratives from women with spinal cord injury
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 29:22, s. 1679-1688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. To gain an understanding of how women with spinal cord injury (SCI) experienced human encounters in occupations and how these influenced their participation. Method. The data were collected through two or three in-depth interviews with 13 women (age 25 - 61 years) with SCI. Data analysis was carried out by using a paradigmatic analysis of narrative data, followed by an interpretation based on a narrative theory. Results. The results showed a complexity where the women's experiences and acting in human encounters changed over time. In these human encounters the women struggled with conflicts, supported other persons that were insecure and revaluated their apprehension about persons in their social network. These multidimensional human encounters thereby enabled them to regain participation in occupations. Conclusions. This shows that human encounters are important for persons with disabilities so they can restructure their occupational identity and their needs for participation in occupations. The study also showed that the use of narratives as a tool within rehabilitation could lead to an increased understanding of the subjective changes that occur over time for a person with a disability

  • A framework for the modelling of tempo-spatial enterprise
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Systemic Studies. - 1751-0589 .- 1751-0597. ; 1:3, s. 231-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework for the modelling of enterprise operations is presented, aiming at enabling a conception of enterprise operations in three explicitly aligned perspectives: its what, or morphology; its when, or temporal position; its where, or spatial position. It is derived from the precepts of a General Systems Theory and its General Process Theory. The practical and empirical benefit of this framework is indicated by a real-life case, a so-called 'Transatlantic Shopping Process', where the models constructed enable management of complexities emerging from enterprise operations.

  • "Vad månde blifva af dessa barnen?" : En studie av David Björlings pedagogik och dess bakgrund i äldre sångundervisningstraditioner
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation's title is: "What is to become of these children?", a study of David Björling's way of teaching and the background to it in older traditions of teaching singing.During the first decades of the 1900s, David Björling formed a singing school for children with his sons. Teaching started at a sensationally early age. David Björling's methods were controversial, and were questioned. David Björling himself asserted that his methods of teaching the children were serious and would give good results, and at the same time he emphasised that teaching singing was part of the musical upbringing he wanted to give his children. The aim of the dissertation is to deduce the methods David Björling applied to his sons. In the study, I investigate how David Björling taught, how it was recieved and which vocal pedagogical and didactic traditions David Björling can have been inspired by in his teaching of singing. The presentation is based on the tradition of hermeneutical interpretation and first and foremost on Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics. The results show that the school was formed in accordance with the pedagogical model we understand today as the Suzuki method. Björling is also found to have been inspired by theories of teaching children singing that were proposed at the beginning of the last century. According to the analysis of the results, David Björling is found to have roots in an older Italian tradition. The results point to recurring similarities between David Björling's methods and the Lamperti school's didactic principles.

  • Being an Archivist in our Times - Trying to Manage Long-Term Digital Preservation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Information Systems. - Sundsvall : Mittuniversitetet. - 1653-4360. ; 3:2, s. 47-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information technology offers the possibility to produce and archive more recorded information than ever before. Thus it is has become feasible to preserve and have access to information in almost unlimited amounts. In sharp contrast, the situation today suggests that societal data has become significantly less accessible than was previously the case. This is both ironic and tragic. In this paper, we recognize that the cultural heritage is at risk, given current circumstances as revealed through observation and dialogue with an archivist. While there are many projects, cultural heritage institutions, government agencies and private enterprises involved in an ambitious research agenda, the majority of these are focussed on technical solutions. In contrast, we provide an indepth point of view of an archivist who is expected to preserve information in order to safeguard the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage. This report reveals the challenges as well as the systemic implications related to the full implementation of the Archival Information Systems guidelines, that fully involve archivists and users in systems design features and functionalities, in order to enable the advancement of longterm digital preservation.
