  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift. - 0039-0747. ; 109:2, s. 133-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Project Hybrid regimes has democratization and non-democratic regimes as its focus. In recent years, research has shown how a number of authoritarian regimes have adopted a blend of democracy and authoritarianism rather than converting outright to full democracy. A country might for instance hold free elections but show little regard for the political and human rights of citizens. Project collaborators are operating on the premise that this type of blended or hybrid regime constitutes a distinct regime type alongside democracies, full authoritarian regimes, or totalitarian governments. They seek to explore the question of whether outside aid from full democracies can aid hybrid regimes in converting into full democracies. While the number of democratic governments around the world has increased in recent years, researchers have noted that hybrid regimes often resist efforts on the part of foreign democratic organizations to aid them toward a process of greater democratization. Citing the case of post-Soviet countries, and the Ukraine, the authors question the widely held perception by researchers that countries possessing a blend of democratic and authoritarian elements are at a transition point on the way to full democratization and that non-democratic elements of their governments merely constitute temporary setbacks. The authors, noting that heads of such regimes resist full democracy because they aren't prepared to accept challenges to their political power, argue for a new for the recognition of a new, lasting hybrid type of government characterized by elements of both democracy and authoritarianism. • During the 1990s the Central-European governments all took steps in varying degrees toward implementing more conservative, re-familization policies, which support women in their roles as mothers and make it more difficult for them to remain in the labor market. This article discusses the relationship between gender attitudes and gender policy in Central Europe and the latest changes in both. We focus on two countries, Catholic Poland, and the secular Czech Republic, in order to control for the role of Catholicism as an explanatory factor of familism. Beside statistical sources, administrative data and information from interviews with policy makers, we use data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) 1994 and 2002 on gender and family, analyzing them at both the micro and macro levels. Our study shows that post-communist re-familization policies are coming increasingly intocontradiction with the needs and aspirations of the populace, which is becoming more positive towards gender equality © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc. • IT - the most revolutionary issue globally: but is it for all?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: InfoTrend. - 1653-0225. ; 62:3, s. 71-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This article discusses the challenges of disseminatinginformation using ICTs (Informationand Communication Technologies) in postconflictcountries like Sierra Leone and focuseson the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's(TRC) findings. The TRC findings were meantto promote an understanding of the crimesthat were committed against the innocent civiliansduring the war, and to contribute to theprevention of future atrocities. It particularlylooks at the most marginalized groups, namely, women and children. The TRC findings werepublished in both a book and electronic form. Some simpler versions of the findings werealso published by some NGOs but nevertheless, the diffusion of information into partsof the society where it is needed mostly hasbeen inadequate. The Internet is a mediumused to disseminate information effectivelyfrom one to many. The electronic version of thefindings is available on the Internet but accessto it requires information skills and access toICTs. It is argued that lack of ICTs and informationskills is an obstacle to the empowermentof women and children in Sierra Leone, which also hinders sustainable development. This article discusses the challenges of disseminatinginformation using ICTs (Informationand Communication Technologies) in postconflictcountries like Sierra Leone and focuseson the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's(TRC) findings.
