  • Hybridregimer : förändrade förutsättningar för demokrati och demokratibistånd

    • Project Hybrid regimes has democratization and non-democratic regimes as its focus. In recent years, research has shown how a number of authoritarian regimes have adopted a blend of democracy and authoritarianism rather than converting outright to full democracy. A country might for instance hold free elections but show little regard for the political and human rights of citizens. Project collaborators are operating on the premise that this type of blended or hybrid regime constitutes a distinct regime type alongside democracies, full authoritarian regimes, or totalitarian governments. They seek to explore the question of whether outside aid from full democracies can aid hybrid regimes in converting into full democracies. While the number of democratic governments around the world has increased in recent years, researchers have noted that hybrid regimes often resist efforts on the part of foreign democratic organizations to aid them toward a process of greater democratization. Citing the case of post-Soviet countries, and the Ukraine, the authors question the widely held perception by researchers that countries possessing a blend of democratic and authoritarian elements are at a transition point on the way to full democratization and that non-democratic elements of their governments merely constitute temporary setbacks. The authors, noting that heads of such regimes resist full democracy because they aren't prepared to accept challenges to their political power, argue for a new for the recognition of a new, lasting hybrid type of government characterized by elements of both democracy and authoritarianism. • Institutional Settings and Civic Education: A Comparative Study of Different Types of Publicand Private Schools.Since the 1990s, the Swedish school systemhas become increasingly more diversified.Decentralization, the introduction ofprivate schools, the challenge of globalizationand increased ethnic diversity amongpupils have contributed to an increasingheterogeneity. This project analyses the prospects for civiceducation in different institutional settingsand contexts, in both public and privateschools. Using unique survey data1999 and 2009 we ask which effects differentinstitutional settings have on ”citizencompetences”, i.e. civic engagement, politicalefficacy, knowledge about democracyand political issues, and democratic valuesand tolerance. The project breaks down into three distinctbut interrelated parts. The first dealswith changes over time in young Swedes´civic competences. The second subprojectfocuses on the way and consequences when controversial issues aretaught in different schools and institutionalsettings. The third sub-project adds acomparative perspective by analyzing similaritiesand differences among young peopleand schools in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and England.

  • The discursive construction of identity in an Internet hip-hop community
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Revista Alicantina de Estudios Ingleses. - 0214-4808. ; :19, s. 23-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • In this paper, the Internet message board forum is proposed as an example of a community of practice (Eckert and McConnell-Ginet, 1992) in which contributors exhibit common linguistic conventions and forms of participation. The emergence of individual identities in interaction is examined in the genre-specific context of hip-hop Internet message boards. A corpus analysis of message board postings clearly shows that contributors systematically exploit the spoken and written qualities of the language of message boards, the " third medium" (Crystal, 2001) to identify themselves linguistically. Linguistic conventions or practices reveal a tendency among contributors to discursively construction their identities via a "social positioning of self and other" (Bucholtz and Hall, 2005) as experts or non-experts in the hip-hop community. Contributors' identities as experts or simply in-group members are further corraborated or established by the codification not only of non-standard pronunciations and grammar characteristic of speech, but also of non-standard orthography, which demands a written forum to be appreciated, as it is neutralized and unremarkable in speech. Because of the written and spoken qualities of message board discourse, both the content and the form of postings can be manipulated to showcase familiarity with hip-hop discursive practices. Internet message boards therefore represent the ideal forum for discursively constructing a hip-hop identity.
