  • Towards Sustainabel Oil Refinery - Pre-study for larger co-operation project
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this report, the Chalmers EnergiCentrum (CEC) presents the results of a pre-study commissioned by Preem relating to the effective production of future vehicle fuels. This pre-study was made up of three studies focusing on energy streamlining, the utilisation of waste heat and carbon-dioxide separation and biorefinement relating to the gasification and hydration of vegetable oils. One of the common starting points for these studies was the current situation at the Preem refineries in Göteborg and Lysekil from where the measurement data were obtained and analysed. The report summarises the knowledge situation based on current research in the individual technical fields. The results present some interesting future opportunities for developing the sustainable production of future vehicle fuels. The sections vary, as the areas that have been examined differ and the sections have been written by different people. The reports ends with some joint conclusions and a number of questions which could be included and answered in a more extensive future main study, as part of a developed research partnership between Preem and the Chalmers University of Technology. The preliminary results of this work were analysed with the client at workshops on 1 October and 29 November 2007. The report is written in English combined with an extensive summary in Swedish including a proposal on a future main study. The study was conducted by the Chalmers EnergiCentrum (CEC), in collaboration with a number of researchers in the CEC’s network. They included Thore Berntsson, Jessica Algehed, Erik Hektor and Lennart Persson Elmeroth, all from Heat and Power Technology, Börje Gevert, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Tobias Richards, Forest Products and Chemical Engineering, Filip Johnsson and Anders Lyngfelt, Energy Technology, and Per-Åke Franck and Anders Åsblad, CIT Industriell Energianalys AB. The client, Preem, was represented by Bengt Ahlén, Sören Eriksson, Johan Jervehed, Bertil Karlsson, Gunnar Olsson, Ulf Kuylenstierna, Stefan Nyström, Martin Sjöberg and Thomas Ögren. Tobias Richards was responsible for compiling the report and Bertil Pettersson was the project manager.

  • Moving toward Net-Zero Emissions Requires New Alliances for Carbon Dioxide Removal
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: One Earth. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-3322 .- 2590-3330. ; 3:2, s. 145-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The 1.5 degrees C target will require removing at least some of the carbon dioxide (CO2) previously emitted. Knowledge on how this can be done has been increasing, though barriers remain concerning governance, policy, and acceptability. For the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to move beyond an academic debate on CO2 removal (CDR), a broader alliance of research and policy communities, industry, and the public is needed.

  • Chemical-Looping Using Combined Iron/Manganese/Silica Oxygen Carriers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 3rd International Conference on Chemical Looping, 9-11 September 2014, Göteborg.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Combined oxides of iron, manganese and silica have been used as oxygen carriers for chemical-looping combustion. Three materials with varying composition of iron, manganese and silica have been evaluated in oxygen release experiments and during continuous operation with syngas and natural gas as fuel. The concentration of oxygen released increased as a function of temperature and the highest concentrations of oxygen were measured with the material with the highest fraction of manganese. It was also this material which gave the best conversion of both syngas and natural gas; essentially full conversion of syngas and above 95% conversion of natural gas above 900°C. The other two materials showed similar performance, albeit with higher syngas conversion for the material with the lowest manganese fraction and the lowest conversion of natural gas for the same material. The materials lasted for 10-14 h of operation with fuel addition before circulation disruption occurred, which was likely caused by particle attrition in all three cases. A phase diagram of the iron-manganese-silica system was constructed and the possible relevant phase transitions were identified. This analysis showed that more phase transitions could be expected for the materials with higher manganese content which could explain the superior performance of the material with the highest manganese content. This could possibly also explain the much higher oxygen release of this material. It should however be noted that this material was operated with the highest fuel reactor inventory per thermal power which could also be a contributing factor to the better performance of this material. The study shows that it is possible to achieve very high fuel conversion with combined oxides of iron, manganese and silica as oxygen carrier. The mechanical stability of the particles was rather poor though and would need to be improved. On the other hand the findings relating to material stability is not necessary valid for natural materials containing a number of additional elements. The results are also of interest as an indication of how natural materials with similar composition, i.e. manganese ores, would perform as oxygen carriers.

  • NiO particles with Ca and Mg based additives produced by spray-drying as oxygen carriers for chemical-looping combustion
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1876-6102. ; 1:1, s. 479-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Chemical-looping combustion is a two-step combustion process where CO2 is obtained in a separate stream, ready for compression and sequestration. The technique involves two interconnected fluidized bed reactors, with a solid oxygen carrier circulating between them. Results of reactivity experiments with 24 different oxygen carriers, based on NiO with NiAl2O4 and/or MgAl2O4 and produced with spray-drying, are presented. The investigation revealed that oxygen carriers supported by MgAl2O4, or where a small amount of MgO was added, displayed an increased fuel conversion when compared to oxygen carriers of NiO supported by NiAl2O4.
