  • Mannequin Properties Desired for Ergonomic Evaluation of Car Interiors
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 43-48
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mannequin properties desired for ergonomic evaluation of car interiors Lars Hansson, Kenneth Holmqvist, Simon Sjölander, Giovanni Distante, Guiseppe Andreoni, Nicholas Colford, Tomas Engström, Gert-Åke Hansson, Roland Kadefors, Patric Petersson, Camilla Rigotti, Lena Sperling, Anders Sundin, Per Östman, Roland Akselsson The aim of this study was to simulate a future mannequin with real people in order to find characteristics necessary for ergonomic evaluation of comfort in car interiors. We argue that the mannequin should ideally perform natural movements, collision detection, a biomechanical model, and eyes. Optional improvements to the mannequin involve muscles and a heart. We also discuss the user interface to the mannequin and means to present mannequin data.

  • Process Oriented Ergonomics - The Ergonomics of the Future? A Case Study of Integrated Ergonomics at an Engine Assembly Plant
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEA 2000/HFES 2000 Congress. ; 5, s. 5-331
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ergonomics are, in most cases, focusing on the human being when evaluating assembly system designs. This results in the human performance being expressed isolated from the technical environment. On the other hand, technicians are prone to concentrate on the hardware. These conditions underline the need to pursue a more integrated evaluation and design procedure in order to avoid the drawbacks of these traditional approaches. In this paper, the authors propose an alternative approach, i.e. process oriented ergonomics, which might be a constructive way of tackling some of the more complex aspects of the man-machine interaction in industrial environments such as assembly of engines.

  • Annie, a Tool for Integrating Ergonomics in the Design of Car Interiors
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials & Manufacturing. ; 108:5, s. 1114-1124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this ANNIE project – Applications of Neural Networks to Integrated Ergonomics – BE96-3433, a tool for integrating ergonomics into the design process is developed. This paper presents some features in the current ANNIE as applied to the design of car interiors. A variant of the ERGOMan mannequin with vision is controlled by a hybrid system for neuro-fuzzy simulation. It is trained by using an Elite system for registration of movements. An example of a trajectory generated by the system is shown. A fuzzy model is used for comfort evaluation. An experiment was performed to test its feasibility and it showed very promising results.

    • An example of a result from a long-term cooperation with Lund University (together with professor Roland Akselsson at the Department for Work Environment) there some of the authors (Engström) gained extensive grants (Wallenberg Stifelsen regarding equipment as well as other founding from e.g. the Swedish Work Environment Found). In this case the just mentioned EU-financing.

  • Preferred car driving posture using 3-D information
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Vehicle Design. - 1741-5314. ; 42:1-2, s. 154-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few studies have presented three-dimensional car-driving postural information. This laboratory study investigated drivers' preferred postures, preferred interior dimensions and how they characterise their postures. The minimum-maximum intervals of preferred angles corresponded well with other experimental studies and were larger than intervals for comfort, strength and alertness defined on the basis of theoretical reasoning. No preferred posture differences were found between females and males; nor were differences found when comparing posture after five and twenty minutes of driving. Preferred posture was not symmetric: significant differences were found between the left and right side. Subjects characterised their posture as comfortable, relaxing and restful.

  • Posture and Comfort Analysis of Car Drivers
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nordic Ergonomics Society Annual Conference 1998. ; , s. 200-203
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the EC project, ANNIE (Application of Neural Networks to Integrated Ergonomics) the aim is to develop a human simulation and ergonomic evaluation tool based on a neural network. Recorded movement patterns from subjects, performing tasks in real environments, will train the network. The net will control a mannequin, to perform human-like movements. The human model will be placed in different virtual working environments and be ordered to perform a task. Injury risk and comfort will be estimated. The ANNIE tool is meant to be a cheap, simple and fast ergonomic evaluation method which will be used by designers in an early stage of the design process. In the project, ANNIE will be developed for three different environments. One of them is the car driver environment. In the ANNIE project a car driving experiment has been performed in the department of Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology in Lund by partners in the EC project. A goal for the experiment was to evaluate the feasibility of some methods recording ergonomic data from humans for use in ANNIE. Some results have been presented by Hanson, L. et al (1998a, 1998b). Another goal was to sample some training data for development of neural nets for ANNIE. This paper will include a report from an ongoing literature review on comfort applied to car drivers. Also the most interesting results concerning movements and postures are reviewed from the Lund Car driving experiment (Hanson, L. et al, 1998 a and 1998b).
